Arc Synopsis
With the Earth at peace once again, and Beerus slumbering, our heroes begin to settle back into their normal lives. However, such a battle has left Goku wanting nothing more than to continue training, but Chi-Chi demands he focus on being a good grandfather and provide for his family. Vegeta, now determined to surpass Goku more than ever, is also fixated on training. Eventually learning of Whis’ regular visits to Earth to sample its delicious foods with Bulma, Vegeta persuades Whis to train him with some instant ramen, and the two depart for Beerus’ planet.
It has been more than half a year since Vegeta left to train with Whis — Gohan and Videl’s daughter Pan has been born, Gohan has become a successful scholar, and Kuririn has joined the police force. While trying to calm Chi-Chi down, who is insistent Pan will not become another “battle-loving idiot”, Bulma lets slip that Vegeta has been gone training with Whis without even coming back to visit. When Goku overhears this, he freaks out and insists Bulma tell him the next time Whis comes to Earth. Whis eventually stops by to see Bulma, and Goku quickly rushes over, but Chi-Chi shows up as well and forbids Goku from leaving to train. Bored with all this arguing, Whis starts to leave, but Goku runs after him, grabbing onto him just before he rockets off into space.
Vegeta is displeased to see Goku show up to train as well, but eventually gives him the rundown of their training regiment, or rather the numerous chores Whis requires them to do before he will train them. The two eventually begin training with Whis, which starts out with weighted training, but soon gives way to sparring with Whis. However, the two Saiyan cannot even lay a finger on Whis…
Meanwhile, the remnants of Freeza’s army, who have become a shell of their former greatness, are forced to withdraw troops from an invasion attempt yet again. In disgust, the army’s de facto leader Sorbet orders Tagoma, his top lieutenant, to accompany him to Earth to return Lord Freeza to life. Using the Pilaf Gang, who have already gathered most of the Dragon Balls, they summon Shenlong and revive Freeza. The two quickly gather up Freeza, who had been sliced to pieces, and return to their spaceship, where Freeza’s body is fully regenerated using in a healing chamber. After hearing just how strong Goku has become since his death, Freeza declares he will train for the first time and take his revenge on the Saiyan scum who did this to him.
The two Saiyans continue sparring with Whis on Beerus’ planet, but the loud ruckus eventually wakes up Beerus, who is rather displeased to find them training there, and that Whis has been enjoying Earth’s delicious foods without him. Four months soon pass, and Jaco stops by Earth to warn Bulma of Freeza’s eminent arrival. Bulma relays the warning to the others and attempts to contact Whis by luring him with a strawberry sundae, but it is to no avail. Freeza and his forces soon arrive and are confronted by the Earth’s warriors, who quickly dispatch many of Freeza’s soldiers. Seeing this, Tagoma enters the fray. Having significantly powered up through his training with Freeza, Tagoma easily takes down Piccolo, but is suddenly caught off guard and sent flying by a headbutt from Gotenks. While reeling in pain, Tagoma encounters Frog Ginyu and the two switch bodies.
Becoming a Super Saiyan, Gohan steps up and quickly neutralizes Ginyu. However, Gohan is suddenly pierced by one of Freeza’s ki beams. Piccolo quickly jumps in the way before Freeza can finish him off for good, sacrificing himself to save Gohan. On Beerus’ planet, Goku and Vegeta have been training inside Whis’ staff, and after being brought back out, Whis notices he has a message from Bulma. Learning of Freeza’s revival, the two Saiyans rush back to Earth. Just as Freeza is about to finish off Gohan again, Goku intervenes and deflects the ki blast. Vegeta meanwhile obliterates Ginyu. After berating Vegeta for doing such a thing, Goku squares off with Freeza, who has now transformed into his final form. After going back-and-forth for a bit, the two decide to stop playing around and show their true power.
Goku takes first honors and transforms into a Super Saiyan, although now with blue hair and a blue aura. To make it easy for Freeza to understand, he says it is just Super Saiyan with the power of Super Saiyan God. After testing out Goku’s new power, Freeza smirks and unveils his new transformation as well. After the smoke clears, Freeza appears shimmering like gold, and Freeza dubs himself “Golden Freeza”. The two super powers begin their true battle, and for some time Freeza clearly holds the upper hand, but Goku soon spots a flaw in Freeza’s plan. Vegeta sees it too, explaining that Freeza’s body is not used to his new power and it is quickly burning up his energy. Infuriated, Freeza launches an all-out assault on Goku, but it has little affect now. Goku quickly turns the tables and soon has Freeza on his knees, until Sorbet unleashes a sneak attack and pierces Goku’s heart with a beam from his ring.
Before Freeza can finish off Goku, Vegeta steps in and has Kuririn give Give a senzu. Taking his turn to fight Freeza, Vegeta transforms into a blue-haired Super Saiyan as well and begins one-sidedly attacking Freeza. Just as Vegeta is about to finish him off, Freeza launches a ki blast straight into the Earth, killing everyone except those standing around Whis, who has protected them with a shield. As they mourn everyone’s death, Whis offers Goku the chance for a “redo” to finish off Freeza by turning back time. Goku accepts and Whis turns back time three minutes, just shortly before Freeza destroyed the Earth. Goku quickly flies at the two, transforming into a blue-haired Super Saiyan once again and unleashing a Kamehameha, which obliterates Freeza. Vegeta is furious at Goku for interfering, but Bulma and the others explain to him what happened.
Shortly thereafter Bulma holds a dinner party for everyone at Capsule Corporation in celebration of Freeza’s defeat. Piccolo, who has been revived using the Namekian Dragon Balls, is told the full story of what happened and agrees to train Gohan. Meanwhile down in Hell, Freeza is once more wrapped up and hanging from a tree in the middle of the same field of flowers as before. The faeries and cute stuffed animals all welcome him back, while he screams in frustration.
Main Differences From the Theatrical Film
While the overall “Resurrection ‘F'” story arc is based on the 2015 theatrical film of the same name, the TV adaptation is not a verbatim retelling, but is instead an altered version of similar events. The following is a breakdown of the main differences between the original theatrical film version and its TV adaptation:
- In the theatrical film Vegeta says he tagged along with Goku to train with Whis in order to keep up with him, whereas in the TV adaptation he receives half a year’s training prior to Goku arriving. Goku even mentions that Vegeta is probably stronger than him at this point.
- The circumstances behind Vegeta and Goku’s new clothing is revealed — Bulma designed Vegeta’s new battle armor, which he takes with him to Beerus’ planet, and Whis presents Goku with a new dōgi after his arrival — in the TV adaptation, which is never explained within the theatrical film.
- Kuririn’s chase scene with the two bank robbers takes place prior to Freeza’s revival in the TV adaptation, but in the theatrical film this event occurred four months later, just prior to Freeza’s arrival on Earth.
- The majority of Goku and Vegeta’s training with Whis, including Whis discussing their weaknesses, Whis accidentally stepping in poop, and their sparring with Whis, has been moved in the TV adaption to take place prior to Freeza’s revival. These events do not occur in the theatrical film until just prior to Freeza’s arrival on Earth.
- In the theatrical film the Pilaf Gang has only collected six Dragon Balls prior to Sorbet and Tagoma appearing, with Tagoma diving into the sea to recover the seventh ball. These events have been altered in the TV adaptation, where the Pilaf Gang has gathered all seven Dragon Balls on their own.
- Tagoma and Sorbet’s dialogue after leaving Earth discussing the necessity to revive Freeza from Akira Toriyama’s original script, which was cut from the theatrical film, has been included in the TV adaptation.
- Shenlong is able to grant three wishes in the TV adaptation, as opposed to only two in the theatrical film. Shenlong explains that since Dende took over as God of Earth, he can now grant three wishes, which falls inline with his abilities at this point in the manga.
- In the theatrical film Tagoma is killed by Freeza shortly after his revival. However, in the TV adaptation Tagoma is not immediately killed and instead becomes Freeza’s training partner, gaining significant power himself. During the battle with Earth’s warriors his body is stolen by Ginyu, and he is then killed by Vegeta.
- When Jaco arrives at Capsule Corporation to warn of Freeza’s impending arrival he is greeted by Dr. Brief in the theatrical film, whereas he is thoroughly harassed by Goten and Trunks in the TV adaptation.
- Rather than destroying North City as a “friendly” greeting, Freeza decides to instead fill Goku’s heart with sorrow and anger by killing his friends before he arrives, specifically Gohan and Kuririn.
- Upon his arrival to the battle field, Tenshinhan mentions that he left Chiaotzu and Yamcha behind since it seemed so dangerous. This line is slightly altered in the TV adaptation, with Yamcha not being mentioned at all.
- In both the theatrical film and the TV adaptation, Gohan mentions he followed Bulma’s advice and did not inform Goten or Trunks about the situation because they are prone to do something reckless. However, in the TV adaptation the young duo sense Tagoma’s odd power and rush to the battle field and momentarily appear as Super Saiyan Gotenks before their fusion wears off.
- Shisami faces off against Piccolo in an even-matched battle in the theatrical film, but in the TV adaption Shisami is instead engaged by Gohan, both of whom are then shot by Tagoma in order to kill Gohan.
- Similar to the battle with Nappa, Piccolo sacrifices himself in the TV adaptation in order to save Gohan from Freeza’s finishing attack.
- In the theatrical film Freeza kills all of his men, apart from Sorbet, after they have been defeated by the Z Warriors, commenting that their lying around like that is an eyesore. In the TV adaptation Freeza “accidentally” kills all of his men as he powers up into his final form to face off against Goku.
- Instead of learning of Bulma’s message about Freeza’s revival and assault on Earth from the Oracle Fish, like in the theatrical film, Whis realizes he has a message after releasing Goku and Vegeta from his staff, where they have been training, in order to retrieve some pizza.
- After arriving back on Earth, Vegeta is the first to realize that Freeza must have been resurrected with the Dragon Balls, whereas in the theatrical film Piccolo was the one who realized this after recalling the sky turning black and getting an ominous feeling a few months prior.
- In the TV adaptation Goku returns to his normal form as he lectures Golden Freeza about his defeat, but is then suddenly shot by Sorbet in a sneak attack. This is in contrast to the theatrical film, where Goku was still in his Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form when he is shot.
- Sorbet is killed in the theatrical film when one of Freeza’s energy attacks deflected by Vegeta hits him, blowing him up without a trace. In the TV adaptation the beam deflected by Vegeta merely pierces his chest, and he falls to the ground dead.
- As opposed to the theatrical film, where only Bulma mourns her family’s death after Freeza destroys the Earth, the TV adaptation depict Kuririn and Gohan also mourning the loss of their families.
- In the TV adaptation Whis does not mention his ability to turn back time until after the Earth has been destroyed by Freeza, whereas in the theatrical film he discusses it with Goku and Vegeta after Beerus accidentally destroys a nearby planet while they are still training with him, prior to Freeza arriving on Earth.
