The art in the manga was pretty good, haven't read past 3 though. There's way too much teen angst for my taste.

Re: Craziest Dragon Ball-related opinions, rumours, etc.

Having martial arts doesn't preclude something from being a superhero story. There are colorful characters, they save the day, there are colorful bad guys trying to take over or destroy the world. They are superficial similarities but that's enough to reach the erroneous conclusion. I'm saying all ...

Re: Craziest Dragon Ball-related opinions, rumours, etc.

I'm not talking about it being a superhero team, just in that genre, and yes, people still believe it is. I think this is due to how both shows were handled by Funimation in North America. I'd like to think so, but plenty of people here on this very forum make that mistake. I'm not sure I understan...

Re: Craziest Dragon Ball-related opinions, rumours, etc.

That this series, originally based around Journey to the West, about a young martial arts prodigy (who's heavily, heavily based on Sun Wukong) who goes on a lifelong, never-ending journey training under various great martial arts masters, mystics, and heavenly deities, meets, fights, and befriends ...

Re: What parts of the franchise evoke nostalgia for you?

For me personally I love reading the early volumes of the manga, really takes me back to when I was younger. I used to get the manga as it was coming out in the UK back in '05 iirc, probably would've been the gollancz edition. I remember my favorite part from the time was the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai,...

Re: Recommendations for manga like Dragon Ball (in certain ways)

3x3 Eyes and Peacock King are pretty good. Fist of the North Star's another obvious choice. It's definitely more on the shonen side of things but Ironfist Chinmi's pretty decent too. Fist of the North Star is probably the best out of that lot, if you want to read the manga though you're kinda stuck ...

Re: Are CRT HDTVs better to watch Classic Dragon Ball media?

I've never heard of a HD CRT before so maybe they look better on that. The HD CRT TV I've mentioned is a Samsung WS-32Z419D [R]. HD Ready so means it's 720p. Here's what it looks like (taken from a Google search). https://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTc2WDEwMjQ=/z/1W0AAOSwCA5cXeaF/$_86.JPG It's advertised a...

Re: Are CRT HDTVs better to watch Classic Dragon Ball media?

I don't know if it's better, but the only two TVs I own are CRTs (not by choice mind you, I got them for free from the tip when I was short on cash.) From my experience it looks fine enough, it can be a little blurry sometimes though.

Re: Why does the Funi dub refuse to acknowledge Piccolo is a demon?

I would just chalk it up to Funimation not knowing (or caring) about the source material. I would assume they still got translated scripts? I get that they probably don’t get, for example, that Son Goku is a Japanese reading of Sun Wukong and maybe barely understood that Son is his last name hence ...

Re: How much have you spent on the franchise?

Too much probably, I spent quite a lot trying to collect a bunch of different editions of the manga both English and Japanese. I've calmed down a bit now and I set myself a small budget so I don't end up blowing all my wages on Dragon Ball merch. Altogether probably about 1k as a rough estimate, I d...

Re: Was Yu Yu Hakusho trying to copy Dragon Ball Z?

TbH, I always thought Hiei's design and personality was somewhat inspired by Vegeta, but given that Vegeta had been around for about only two years before YYH started and had yet to be as popular as he is today, that' was probably not the case. There was a mini comic that Togashi did not long after...

Re: If Dragonball was written/directed by another big named anime creator/mangaka, who would you want it to be?

Fuck me , the art on that Pokemon manga is gorgeous . Is there anywhere I can buy that? Also as a side note, I completely agree. Yuusuke Murata's art is like sex on paper. It's a fan comic sold at events in Japan, like Comic Market. You might be able to find copies on auction sites, though. Didn't ...

Re: If Dragonball was written/directed by another big named anime creator/mangaka, who would you want it to be?

In terms of director, I'd love to see how Shinbou Akiyuki handles a take on Dragon Ball. For character designs I'd love to see him work with Wakabayashi Atsushi again, but Wakabayashi is also an accomplished director in his own right, so I feel like they could both easily lead a new project. Sawa R...

Masanori Morita. I recently read Rokudenashi Blues, which has now become one of my favorite Shonen manga EVER, and I would kill for his writing style and his incredibly stunning artstyle -- which in itself is a wonderful combination of photo-realism and bizarre anime-style expressions while maintai...

Re: If Dragonball was written/directed by another big named anime creator/mangaka, who would you want it to be?

Is it acceptable to mention Watsuki? Or is he pretty much blacklisted in fandom now due to the incident? He's a pretty scummy guy from the sounds of things, but honestly I do like his art quite a bit. And that short series he did, Gun Blaze West, is one of my favourites of his. But I think it would...
