Re: Who saw the Japanese version as a kid?

Mr, and I'm glad you are so polite. What's a GCD talk btw? I get it that its (Apparently) meant to be really long and so on but I still dont know what that is... "GDC" is Game Developers Conference, an annual event where video game developers get together to talk shop, share best-practice...

Re: Is Dragon ball GT Canon?

Dragon Ball GT was an official continuation of the original story created by the same team at Toei Animation, with early character design involvement from Akira Toriyama, which aired on television between 1996 and 1997. Its in-universe story began five years after the original manga/TV series ended...

Re: FUNimation provides closure for the Ultimate Uncut Special Edition cancellation

They at least should be given a reason as to why a box set they spent a huge ton of their hard earned cash on got canned. They were given a reason : FUNimation canned them in favor of a condensed release with an internally-easier-to-produce production process (one that, let's be honest, catapulted ...

Real-talk time. You seem like you need validation and acknowledgement, so as someone who lived through this both as a consumer and a "reporter" on every single issue, here it is: Up until "ball in your court, skeletons in closet, etc." that's... well, I wouldn't say a GREAT, but ...

Re: Does Nintendo Switch mark the end of handheld specific Dragon Ball games?

Something that's been on my mind, as well. Thanks for outlining it so well. With 20+ million units sold each in Japan, America, and Europe, there's still a decent-sized 3DS base for them to market to, especially in these early Switch days where it's primarily the Nintendo enthusiast (and presumably ...

Re: Why is Rock music in DB so frowned upon here?

I agree that it comes down to what era the series was produced in. Alternative Rock/ Nu Metal didn't pervade Anime soundtracks until early 2000, so technically anything produced before then would sound awkward. FUNimation was simply the last one to drunkenly stumble on the bandwagon, by which point...

Re: How much of Yamamoto's score for Kai was stolen?

I actually have a theory of why Kenji Yamamoto did what he did: He IS actually capable of composing original music on his own. But when he first auditioned for Toei, none of his original compositions were approved by them. So he did the only thing he could do, and, well, we all know how that turned...

Re: Pre-Battle of Gods, was it always implied that the Z-fighters were God-tier?

Yeah, Goku was god-tier when he literally trained with God (well, his attendant) before the 23rd Budokai. And then again when he trained with the Lord of Worlds (the Northern Kaio) during the Saiyan arc. And then again when Kaioshin couldn't believe what he was seeing during the 25th Budokai onward....

Re: Why is Rock music in DB so frowned upon here?

I've always wondered this myself. Especially considering a lot of the music from the Budokai game series is essentially plagiarised rock music, yet still seems to be very praised around here. I think it's a case of people just disliking replacement scores in general, with the Budokai series music g...

Re: How much of Yamamoto's score for Kai was stolen?

We have no idea, because Yamamoto is never going to say, and Toei probably doesn't know themselves. They threw the baby out with the bathwater. The ones we know about are the ones that Dragon Ball fans who happened to be watching Kai who also happened to be aware of those specific other songs just s...

Re: Saga Continues Toy Line

I think I was visiting family in Virginia at the time when I bought them. Might have been 1997 by that point. Again, this was while the show was still in syndication from 1996-1998. Irwin didn't come on the scene until FUNimation brought things in-house in 1998. A post I wrote in 2000 says for that ...

I have four figures from the original 1996 release of Bandai's "Super Battle Collection" run over here. Some of them were blue, some were red. They weren't two separate releases or later re-releases; it's just that some characters came in one color (Goku was red, for example), while others...

SJW would have ate early Dragon Ball alive nowadays (admittedly the overt sexualization of Bulma was a bit much) You complain about "SJWs" yet time and time again it's been the conservative parents and local politicians that have a problem with the series over here, whereas the liberal fo...

See, this is exactly what I expected and what I was talking about: it's all pedantic arguments about in-universe stuff, generally strength-related. Again, we don't really know who contributed what at what degree of involvement to what degree of minutia. They thank and acknowledge Toei in the books t...

You're not going to get much more information than that, really. Kisōsha is a company that mainly works with Shueisha and Kodansha on ancillary publications like these. (I don't really know what they've worked on lately, as their website seems to last been touched circa 2008.) Caramel Mama did simil...
