Not sure when that started exactly, but think that's more during the Showa era as affiliated with the 80s as that series is.

Re: Funimation and swearing

FUNimation seemed awfully wish washy about their use of swear words back in the day. They mostly steered clear of them in the early years of their in house dub, but their dub of movie 7 (which predates the Ultimate Uncut dub) had #13 saying things like “I’m here to kill your ass”. Even when the Ult...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" FUNimation Dub Official Discussion Thread

Actually Michael Sinterniklaas appeared in both the 4Kids dub of One Piece as well as the Funimation dub. So don't think folks would give her a bad time for it, even if she wasn't directed so good there. (Only role of hers didn't like, as others were good). And both actors rocked as Leonardo and Apr...

Never saw "Tenchi Muyo in Love" I take it. That was scored by guy from the group Tangerine Dream. Yes he's a German and not a Yank, but still the point stands.

Re: Dub Changes That Don't Bother You...that much

I didn't mind Slug's changed backstory. Yeah, his Japanese wasn't so hot either, but made more sense to me. Also I preferred when they had Raditz talking about Vegeta and Nappa's strength in his dying words over telling them earlier. Gave more of an "Oh crap!" feeling.

Re: Do you think Dragon Ball dub would have benefit from an English Recast?

By what guys are saying of "genuine and professional" voice actors, what do you mean exactly? Do you want union guys who do American cartoons mainly, or big name celebrities who don't really do voice over? This did start the careers of guys who became well known voice actors. Laura Bailey ...

Thought would share this since it's up now. Haven't watched it all as of this posting, so no clue who wins, or what the next one will be:

Re: Which of FUNimation's Name Changes Bother You the Most?

ReCOOOOOm, DaBOOOOra, pikkon , they add extra OOOO and take them away from names that had it originally. Ginyu's boys and Bardock's crew too, they messed up the already alien sounding names for the Ginyu Corps but then just straight up gave Bardock's crew new names. Well, aside from his friend, Bar...

Re: Which of FUNimation's Name Changes Bother You the Most?

All of them! Every single pointless name change they made bugs the hell out of me! Hence why I refuse to see DBS Broly in theaters unless it’s subbed. Right off the bat their refusal to acknowledge Goku’s damily name, Son, is a big one for me. He’s the main character and they won’t even say his ful...

Re: Which of FUNimation's Name Changes Bother You the Most?

Digimon had more stuff than that. Of the original Goggles Kids, Takuya from "Frontier" was the only one of them who had the same full name on both sides of the Pacific. (Tai and Takato had different last names, while Davis had his first name different, obviously).

Re: Question for those who read the Manga

Even though I like Chuck Huber's performance for what it is, I hear Greg Ayres as Pilaf and honestly, his voice coming out of Pilaf works a lot better than Huber IMO. Other voices I hear: Babidi sounds like Gilbert Gottfried, Cell is Corey Burton and Kibito sounds like David Ogden Stiers. Which voi...

Re: Why hire an old lady when you can get a dude?

Can anyone think of a time when a female voiced an adult male character for an American show? Exclude one offs like when Nancy Cartwright voiced an older Bart. Grace Stafford as Woody Woodpecker. Others did him before her, but she's his most known voice. Also there were a couple of Popeye cartoons ...

Re: Who remembers the Dry Era (The Gap)?

Anyone remember remember the dry era? To elaborate on the era I am talking about when I say the Dry Era I'm talking about the time in the DB fanchise where there were no new movies at all, and even other things like manga or anything official was scarce. Back when we were dry out of Dragon Ball con...

Re: Which of FUNimation's Name Changes Bother You the Most?

Are you going to tell me now that the correct way to subtitle One Piece involves saying "Nakama" with a TL note? Or, just face the fact that translation is not exact, and you just have to go for approximate equivalents that work fine in English. I'm not too familiar with One Piece, but as...

Re: Which of FUNimation's Name Changes Bother You the Most?

Probably "King Kai" because of how half-assed it is. Either call him Kaio or call him the World King (or something similar... King of the Cosmos, King of the Worlds, whatever). Don't just translate one part of it, that just confuses people. Especially when we get South Kai, West Kai, and ...

Re: Why hire an old lady when you can get a dude?

Sometimes the opposite happens as during the Amazon Lily arc of One Piece , the dub has one woman Sweet Pea voiced by a man. In Japanese, she's voiced by the lady who voiced Japanese Orochimaru, but not in English. Heck, Doug Goodrich even joked about it in the commentary of how he and two others we...

Re: Which of FUNimation's Name Changes Bother You the Most?

(Though on a semi-related note, part of me wonders if Scandanavian dub of Pokemon called Team Rocket Red and Eric to do a pun). The Norwegian dub didn't, at least. Still "Jessie and James". I don't think they changed any names, at least not the names of any major characters, from what the...

Re: Which of FUNimation's Name Changes Bother You the Most?

Yeah I think people get too wrapped around the axle about how certain things are pronounced. Do people in other languages get like this when they watch dubs of Spongebob or whatever? I think things like that tend to be more of a thing with anime and English speakers. Looked at the Spanish track of ...

Re: Which of FUNimation's Name Changes Bother You the Most?

With the Saiyan pronunciation thing, I see that like how some words from other languages get adopted into English and may be pronounced differently, like guy from Mexico will say "llama" and "burrito" differently than an English speaker.

Re: Funimation Dubbing: My Hero Academia vs Dragon Ball Franchise

Well, with DB the pool was small. Heck, think when DBZ and DB ended in 2003. Deku's voice actor would've been too young for old-timers like Kunzait to date back then. Also, while this may be my bias as I'm a big fan of hers, Monica Rial is awesome on MHA . And Eric Vale is really menacing as Shigara...
