Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 11; Still Unreleased

A company like Discotek would be miles better than Funimation for a broadcast dub release, they're a lot more fan-centric and have a completionist attitude which I love but they unfortunately don't appear to have the financial backing to compete with the bigger distributors. I can't see them ever ge...

Re: Favorite Goku Voice?

Speaking strictly to the English VAs... Peter Kelamis has always been top of my list. As a casting choice, I think he was as close to a perfect fit as you could reasonably hope to find. He possessed most of the qualities you'd want in a Goku voice from the start without having to learn much of it, h...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 11; Still Unreleased

I think there's zero chance of a streaming option for this, unfortunately. Kai has never been streamed as far as I know, and the distributors to the streaming platforms (Toei, Funimation/MangaUK) would only offer them the uncut Funi dub if they seriously considered it. On top of that, there are no C...

Re: Did you know the original English Gohan was in a Friday the 13th movie?

I've known about this for a while, it's pretty cool.

Someone recently pointed out to me that Ted Cole (Yamcha in the Ocean dub) was a background character in Scary Movie.

Re: Long Live Chris Ayres

Always sad when a VA passes. I don't think there was a point I didn't enjoy his Freeza. I still recall not thinking much of Resurrection F except for the parts with Ayres, his performance really carried that film. He was a special talent.

Re: Is Dragon Ball Z Funimation's Worst English Dub?

The art style shift is more understandable for sure, it's part of the reason I personally can't buy Sabat's Z performance in the Saiyan arc. He's deeper sounding than Nappa most of the time which, I just find ridiculous in combination with how he's drawn. In contrast, Sabat's GT Vegeta was an easier...

Re: Is Dragon Ball Z Funimation's Worst English Dub?

I agree with VegettoEX for the most part in regards to the above, though i will say Drummond's performance in the '96-'98 dub did seem ok with Saiyan/Namek arc Vegeta back when he was a full on villain character. Though OTOH for the bits of the Westwood dub of the Cell arc but especially by the Boo...

Re: Is Dragon Ball Z Funimation's Worst English Dub?

Movie 2 is their worst. It's a crappy fandub essentially. I don't know why they thought that was good enough to release for public consumption. Because they were broke, basically. The Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z license had yet to turn a profit according to Chris Sabat and Dale Kelly. Funi wanted or ...

Re: My dream Dragon Ball home release

But you seem to be under the impression that FUNimation owns the actor’s souls and pays them millions of dollar per episode. I never said or implied that. I just gave valid logical reasons why actors might not want to jump on board a new production by a different company when they're tied so closel...

Re: My dream Dragon Ball home release

No, I definitely meant low. It’s really doubtful the actors would cause any trouble or be too expensive. I've already given reasons as to why this wouldn't be as straightforward as you imply but you want to ignore it so whatever. No. Redubbing 291 episodes when people are so attached to the current...

Re: My dream Dragon Ball home release

Which is why there’s a very low chance that in this hypothetical scenario a new company would use a new cast to record any new material. I think you meant to say the other way around. There's a higher chance of using a new cast for newer material to avoid the Funi baggage. But all the existing stuf...

Re: Is Dragon Ball Z Funimation's Worst English Dub?

Sabat was standing on the shoulders of giants when you consider his lack of acting background before doing Vegeta and Piccolo. Brian Drummond and Scott McNeil were both properly trained and knew what they were doing in order to make the scripts work. The difference in screaming ability was also a gl...

Re: My dream Dragon Ball home release

If FUNimation loses the license they don’t have the ability to charge anything for it. It reverts back to being Toei’s property. Also the actors are notoriously paid low so I’m not sure where this high price tag is coming from. I don't know the details of their contract so it's difficult to say for...

Re: My dream Dragon Ball home release

Like, no company is going to redub 800+ episodes , 20 movies and 3 specials worth of content. The Funi dub is going nowhere regardless if FUNimation ever lost the license. Unless Funi tried to charge them an extortionate amount to license their dubs. If that were the case, I could picture a new com...

Re: Is Dragon Ball Z Funimation's Worst English Dub?

The job of a dub isn't to sound like the original. The so much of the way people are judging the dub actors is by how closely they resemble the OG actors and that';s not fair. That's not their job. Their job is to play the character because that's what acting is. Mimicry is hollow. Ayres isn't grea...

Re: Did Dragon Ball air in the UK in the 90s?

I remember reading that too but couldn't find any info about it. I was personally too young at the time and didn't watch that channel so I couldn't verify. All I know is that Sci-Fi and Channel 4 would occasionally air anime but it was typically the more adult stuff. Funimation's Z dub was treated a...

Re: What would you do to make the games more interesting?

A pipe dream of mine has always been voice actor DLC. I stopped playing the games in English long ago but if you gave me the option to switch over to previous cast members like Brian Drummond, Peter Kelamis, Scott McNeil or Saffron Henderson etc, I'd easily pay a premium. Mostly because they've neve...

Re: Can we talk about the Funimation Movie Soundtracks?

For what the US was retroactively applying the process to, they were done by in-house talent. Meanwhile if you notice, for US animation intros, it’s usually never the same person or people doing an intro for more than one different series (it’s almost always a one-off thing). I think that's because...

Re: Home video release ideas thread

Something worth mentioning is that I don't think the RTD set is really a great example for other potential broadcast sets. The introduction-less approach worked for the Saban dub episodes because those episodes had the advantage of starting from episode 1 of DBZ. By nature of what it was there was a...

Re: Home video release ideas thread

I see the point in having some kind of explanation, but a "documentary series" would be very bloated, I think. I did say "a larger documentary or interview series". So I basically left it up in the air for either since this is all hypothetical. I don't personally think the docum...
