As much as everyone is right about it being too much for one film to tackle, I'm surprised no one has suggest multiple films. Like the Berserk flicks. I think I'd be down to see arcs tackled in multiple movies, best of both worlds, great animation while being able to tell larger stories.

Who knows, maybe Toriyama wasn't intending on it. Maybe Gero was a totally different character that we'd meet later, and the whole 20 = Gero thing was introduced as a means of transitioning to the arc's reboot.

Think about it. If Toriyama went with 19 and 20, then the plot is a mysterious teenager shows, warns Goku, Goku trains, and eventually defeats them. It's a plot, but a VERY straightforward one.
