Re: What if Family Guy did a Dragon Ball-based skit?
I'd love a tasteful, thoughtful, clever parody of Dragon Ball by fans, be they Western or otherwise. Oh wait...we've had one for a decade. Judging by the segments, I don't think that those associated with Family Guy like anime. They're pretty much mocking it. I think if they mocked DBZ, surely someo...

Re: Things that grind your gears
I would presume most likely not, from an artistic/respect perspective, however the money & influence it has simply for being American is pretty egregiously widespread. & they did use dub terms in the Super subs, so there's that.8000 Saiyan wrote:I don't think Toei cares one bit about the dubs.

Re: Things that grind your gears
When someone calls Dragon Ball "dark, gritty and realistic" with a straight face. I don't know whether to laugh or get those nuclear launch codes and put mankind down in the name of eugenics. Yeah, I agree. That annoys me to no end. tbh I don't get why that should annoy people. It's a bel...

Re: What do you guys think of Masako Nozawa as Bardock?
They would have been too young for Bardock at the time of the special. Had they gone with a male actor, I think Akira Kamiya, Shigeru Chiba or Akio Otsuka would have been great choices IMO. I don't think Nozawa's Bardock sounds childish. While Goku and Bardock , she's able to differentiate the deli...

Re: Oolong's original dub voice actor back for Final chapters?
I'm not entirely sure, but I think the other VA was brought in while the original VA was out on a theater troupe or something. Theater doesn't really pay, but anime dubbing pays even less, & he couldnt do both at once, so he went with his theater troupe.
At least I think that's the main factor.

Re: Would you say Dragon Ball is the most recognizable anime/manga worldwide?
Even with FUNi's dub aside (sad as it is, regardless of quality it always tends to be the case that US has heavy international influence, due to imperialism), I would probably have to agree. Even in major territories not influenced by FUNi's dub, it seems to be that DB is, if not *the* biggest anime...

Re: What do you guys think of Masako Nozawa as Bardock?
I have similar thoughts on how I view a lot of characters who are voiced by the same person for connections' sake. I don't think her performance is bad, but I feel Goku & Bardock are so diametrically opposite characters (with Bardock being largely a typical gruff male soldier type) that I can't ...

Re: Which Piccolo voice do you prefer: Chris Sabat or Scott McNeil?
I feel as if this is a tad myopic question & a bit of a false equivalency? I like Scott's take better, but out of English voices I like Ray Chase almost as much as Scott & much better than Sabat tbh. However I don't think any of them have really captured the tone of the Japanese actor that w...

Re: Thoughts on Brian Drummond's Vegeta?
I think there were some interviews where they said they had the Japanese audio. If you might possibly give me pointers to it, I'd love to hear it. I personally have only heard that was the case for Pioneer's & Bandai Namco's dubs (& I suspect it was the case for HG's dubs). I don't think FU...

Re: Things that grind your gears
When it comes to Chi-Chi, I don't like her or dislike her. I kind of find her cute in the way that she deals with the stereotypical Japanese house-wife role. I feel like, in a way, she's kind of the "One Sane Man" of the main DB cast, if that makes sense. I'm not a huge fan of this archet...

Re: Thoughts on Brian Drummond's Vegeta?
I wonder whose idea it was to take it that high and raspy. Probably the voice director. It wasn't the voice director. The producers originally told him that Vegeta was a complete and evil psychopath, so that's how he came up with that voice. Essentially all the issue is, is FUNi's ignorance of the ...

Re: Your feeling on Neo Toonami (The Revival) on Adult Swim
Why is it a terrible idea to air Kai and Super back-to-back? Basically because they spammed their biggest hitters in one shot, & allowed very little room in the schedule to grow smaller shows' popularity. JJBA &/or HxH would work easily between Kai & Super, & DB was always going to ...

Re: Your feeling on Neo Toonami (The Revival) on Adult Swim
I think it's great that they're at least a place over here for anime to be on TV (even if, yes, CR & such are far cheaper alternatives for Japan), & I really appreciate how they've done Space Dandy, FLCL2, Big O S2, & far more in terms of just what they've introduced to wide audiences. I...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Bang Zoom Dub Official Discussion Thread
I don't really see how they're closer to the Japanese ones outside of King Kai and that could just be because they couldn't find anyone that could do an impression of Schemmel's voice for him. I just wish that they'd give their own take on the characters Sabat has a pretty deep brutish voice, &...

Re: "Dragon Ball Super" Bang Zoom Dub Official Discussion Thread
Has Bauza ever done an anime dub before? Because I don't think he has. Bauza isn't exactly a regular, but as a favor to Jamie Simone (who began to use him heavily in his original cartoons) likely, he did Ezekiel Stane in Rise of Technovore, & Amadeus Cho in Avengers Confidential. & Baron Ze...

Re: Just how well known is Dragon Ball/Z with the general public?
Dragon Ball's about as niche as Call of Duty. Only if you think DB is some hype WWE-type stuff. Most people are familiar with DB the way that Backstroke of the West viewers enjoyed Star Wars. It kinda is. In fact, it outplaced WWE (known as WWF at the time) in 2001 as most-searched media on the Lyc...

Re: Just how well known is Dragon Ball/Z with the general public?
Aside from FUNi's adaptation, I think it's pretty niche. The dub did pave the way for relatively accurate versions though, & those are relatively popular nowadays. As ABED said, not exactly mainstream (currently at least) but still pretty big for anime. As for the Pokemon comparison - the thing...

Re: What Japanese-only thing would you like to be brought state-side?
The Daizenshuu, a mainstream Dragon Box-esque release, All the animated shorts/OVAs; I have to say, as much as I don't care for (DB's) FUNi dubs, I can't help but feel they aren't giving it spotlight it deserves by letting it go sub-only.
