Re: DBZ's TV Ratings reign is over.

I very specifically remember that happening when I was expecting to see the next episode after Vegeta's kamikaze attack. "Gohan's First Date" even debuted in the second run of those episodes in November after being skipped for being set to air too close after 9/11 and featuring buildings ...

Re: DBZ's TV Ratings reign is over.

. Come to think of it, I remember someone else saying it went back to Raditz after Final Atonement first aired. It definitely looped back to Warriors of the Dead at least after the first time that Final Atonement aired . I very specifically remember that happening when I was expecting to see the ne...

Re: Dragon Ball and Centrism disguised as "A Desire for works to stop being political"

To be fair, the fact that Frieza is a genocidal maniac kind of overshadows the landshark thing. Him conquering planets is a big part of his character, but it largely happens off screen. We actually see him killing innocent people regularly, and taking pleasure out if it. We hope for his downfall pr...

Re: Non-thread-worthy discussions

I was just watching Piccolo's scene after Geets blows himself up vs Buu, he says he is now fighting for others and this deserves his respect. By now Piccolo respects everybody I guess, but did Yamcha or Chaozu ever do something to earn Piccolo's respect, like Vegeta did? I assume he respected Tensh...

, yes it may have influenced him May have. He straight up said it did. . If a kid saw Freeza as a land shark it was from the influence of the media or their parents, not Dragon Ball. "If a kid watched or read X-Men and saw that discriminating against people for the way they were born is wrong ...

Re: Dragon Ball and Centrism disguised as "A Desire for works to stop being political"

He 100 percent was making a statement about land sharks Sure he mentions them within the context of the time he was writing, but ultimately that's not the message Toriyama was hoping for his readers to get. As 90sDBZ said his storytelling approach was very much "bad guys are bad because that's...

Re: Justin Chatwin apologizes for Dragonball Evolution

Whitewashing aside he made a decent Boo saga era Gohan, shame that wasn't the character he was supposed to be playing, but that's not his fault just the way the character was written Goku isn't white? Oh he's super white. Based on the super caucasian Jackie Chan and the Monkey King from the very wh...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

I think people overstate just how much Gohan was "intended" to become the main character. Yeah a lot of people seem to think Toriyama was either setting up Gohan to be the new lead from the moment he was introduced (and I think Toei is to blame for a lot of that) or from the beginning of ...

Re: Dragon Ball and Centrism disguised as "A Desire for works to stop being political"

Iy, but I don't think Toriyama was making a statement about land sharks or anything, moreso to present them as a challenge for Goku to overcome and become stronger From there, the enemy characters rapidly began to escalate. Having become the strongest on the Earth, Goku and co. had also beat the Sa...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

Gohan would not have worked because he simply isn't as entertaining a character as Goku. Plenty of stories work with a lackluster lead because the story itself is entertaining or the supporting cast is strong enough to pick up the slack. Krillin was created because it was felt that Goku wasn't a a ...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

"It wouldn't work, because it's boring!" That was exactly the reaction to Dragon Ball in the West before DBZ made the franchise relevant. But not really because it did just fine in France, Italy, Latin America etc before Z. And the countries that got stuck with Funimation the reaction was...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

So weird too because its clear Toriyama was interested in moving past Goku and ushering in a new generation, so many parts of the Cell and Buu arcs were dedicated to doing that. If Toriyama had stuck to Gohan as the new lead it would have been interesting to see if he would have wrote more material...

Re: The end of era: Sony discontinues the Funimation brand on April 2

They probably weren't allowed to pronounce it correctly. Kaioken managed to slip through but there appeared to been some sort of memo or style guide from Funimation on how to name and pronounce certain things (he's always Goku not Son Goku, the Tenkaichi Budokai is the World Martial Arts Tournament...

Re: Actual Celebrities doing dubbing on Dragon Ball (Star Talents)

. And that's not even getting into the whole "Dragon Ball's Earth is under a one unified government rule under a singular world monarch" aspect, which is a whole demented can of worms unto itself. And that felt more like Toriyama just making it easy on himself to explain how Piccolo could...

Re: The end of "Akira Toriyama canon"

Honestly, I have NEVER seen a single person complain about Spiderman canon or argue "this isn't written by Stan Lee" when it comes to criticizing Sam Raimi's films, or anything of the sort They do it's just the canon is the comics that aren't limited to a single writer (like Kunzait said ...

Re: Justin Chatwin apologizes for Dragonball Evolution

Whitewashing aside To be fair Goku isn't Asian, he's an alien, although I've always imagined him as Japanese. To be even more fair, yes he is. At least in the same way we can understand Superman is an alien who just happens to look like a white guy. Goku is an alien who just happens to resemble an ...

Yeah this is just moving goalposts. You said "Goku Black kept impaling people with not a drop of blood in sight". That is what you said. You are wrong. There are already enough problems to criticize about Super (as with any series, by the way, not just Super) without inventing non-existen...

Also because people would keep surviving impalement in that arc, I miss when injuries were taken very seriously in the series. Like Goku getting his bones crushed against Vegeta To be fair, people surviving impalement has already happened in Cell arc. I've remember Yancha survived Dr. Gero impaling...
