I always found the sort of sound from Portal 2's OST matched for me that kind of 'mid ground' between the grunge of imperfection and the more refined synth sound it eventually evolves too that I personally think would probably do fairly well for a 'Semi-Perfect Cell sound'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c624QWR3CXI

Still got a kind of buzz to it, but it's more refined. ((this track in particular is pretty 'epic', I always imagine it as like some transformation theme :P)).
Portal 2 uses that sort of sound in a few places, the 'glitchy but smooth', clean synth filtered to achieve the harsher scratchiness i guess. Some others might be worth listening to in that respect -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bD7loS0nMGM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uAsD6lQV1I

((good music, full ost has a wider range than what's above but those are somewhat 'similar' in mood to me. you can actually get the whole OST free and legit through the official website http://www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php which is pretty awesome of them))

I honestly think Semi-Perfect is the most menacing of his forms. His initial form was an interesting villain, but didn't really break any molds, except for with his absorbtion. Semi-Perfect had that immense, if misguided, confidence, but even with all that power, he was still had an almost lustful desperation to get #18 to become complete. He was like a roided-out junkie.

Also, in his scenes (that didn't involve Vegeta handing him his ass, that is), there was this relentlessness, & inevitability to his chasing #18, taking Piccolo & #16 out of commission, etc. You couldn't stop him.

For his theme, I hear deep, chugging guitars, while still keeping that mechanical, industrial feel. Immense and oppressive, pounding, with maybe an idea or 2 you have for his Perfect form barely creeping in in some spots.

This is the only thing I can think of close to the feel I'm thinking of. Still quite a bit off, & little higher in tuning & such, but it has that menacing, pounding industrial sound. (Minus the RAh-RAH-RAH! vox, of course. :D ).

Cool suggestions so far. What do you guys think of Mike's take on SemiPerfect Cell?
I always strongly associate this with him: http://youtu.be/yhTdihsIWsE?t=42

I had some ideas come through my head today. I had posted them but decided to edit and hold back. You may have seen already I dunno.

Heard those during their up-time. ;) Heavy guitar stuff honestly isn't my usual favorite, I like a cleaner sound.

I really do like the underlying melody bits to Mike's Cell Yells that kicks in around that time code you posted. It's not the main "part" of the song, but you can definitely hear it building in the background and pairing with the... louder... bits. (I don't know any useful musical nomenclature).
A YouTube channel with no AMVs on it? I know, it's hard to believe.

Honestly I'm at that point where it's not quite gelling for me and I keep leaving it and coming back. I got some ideas last night though that I might try. I have a couple days to really dig in an write so maybe I'll get somewhere with it soon :)

(Dec 26th Update: I've got the sound down, the track is rolling along now with some momentum! I have all tonight and all tomorrow to work on it. With some luck it'll be out tomorrow night. )

So, really the track is done. I'm doing a final render now...but the video has to be shot. I think even the solo is going to be "guitar synched". Any feelings on that? Or is it better to just upload the music than fake like you are really playing it. I usually put a disclaimer int the video description. FYI a lot of my more recent videos have "instrument syncing" in it, but usually only the easier parts.

Oh and I would have probably finished everything already, something cool came up in my personal life today though (good this time yay).

Ok sorry for three replies in a row, but Cell Theme #3 is up!

Partials:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LewthYGAP4k

My pitch plan is slowly being reveals:
Theme 1 main idea was: A B Bb
Theme 2 is basically: F A E B Eb Bb
Theme 3 is F A C# E B G Eb Bb Gb
See the pattern?

3 more notes next time for Perfect Cell. It's gonna be one hell of a ride. Suggestions open.

For some reason, despite everything, THIS track you put up feels the most like your DBZ work than anything else. It reminded strongly of...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN4VCo57kBs

And a lot of your guitar heavy stuff.

Awesome, Makyo star is definitely me playing guitar, but the track was Mike Smith's writing. The only creative contribution I made was the few lead notes that are in there. The rhythm guitar stuff was actually written out for me.

Oh and Mike Smith I think has a penchant for augmented chords, not in Makyo Star but in some other tracks. I don't use them much, but augmented harmonies play a big role in the Semi perfect theme, and will probably also be prominent in the perfect Cell theme as well since I'm building off the previous one's notes.

I'll be mulling over general ideas for Perfect Cell this week probably. I have some idea where I want to go with it already, but I'll be homing in on it more and more until a track emerges. So any suggestions are welcome :)
It's going to be pretty dark. Not too similar to the Faulconer theme. Right now I'm thinking there will be a lot less guitar than the previous two themes. Probably more liquid sounding synth sounds with an aggressive beat.
That's my thought right now anyway.

I'm guessing "dark" is just appropriate for someone who's basically not that different from a rapist, huh?...I mean really, just look at those episodes where he chases #18, and TELL me you don't get uncomfortable vibes from that :?!!

Awesome work, different to what I expected given the theme you posted as 'what you associate as semi-perfect cell'.
Reminds me very much of your raichi theme I find, more energetic but definite similarities.

As for perfect cell;
Do you still have that violin?
Maybe that would make for a smoother alternative to the guitar?

Personally I always felt something more with a classical symphony type feel underlying a more synthetic and dark edge would go well with perfect cell.

It's not one of your tracks, but in the evil majin theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXda7YXeTbQ), the transition and electronic flutter type thing at about 35 seconds i found to be an awesome effect. (probably why I liked the string scratches in the imperfect theme too, they're interesting sounds)
Having perhaps some sort of transitional moment, when it goes from the elegant, composed, more sophisticated side of perfect cell, to something that expressed more of the bio-androids still very present dark side, might be similarly cool.

Either way, awesome work.
Out of curiosity are the Jr's going to get a theme (some variatant of the perfect cell theme or something?) or are you just doing Cell himself.

Thanks :) I did throw a little of the Cell Yells sound in there (0:33), but it kinda gets overwhelmed by all the guitar stuff. I agreed that SemiPerfect cell is kind of brutish and heavy.

Yup I still have the violin. Maybe I'll work that in. Might be a good idea. Playing it is a struggle honestly. Violin is a little further down on my list of instruments that I play. Tuning....yeesh...I'm super critical of my own intonation.

I like the idea of using more orchestral type stuff. Makes me think of Cell games. Perfect Cell is definitely more of a refined kind of character.

I wasn't planning on doing Cell Jrs. I want to move to some other work after I finished the P. Cell theme.

Since it never got a CD release, a "Cell Absorbs" theme based song would be awesome! The original was so dark and foreboding, so I think it would fit perfectly with your style Scott. :D
