Each Composer's 'Magnum Opus'?

Post by Zephyr » Fri Aug 28, 2015 3:53 am

Self explanatory title. What does everyone think is each composer's best musical track made for the franchise?

I'm not too familiar with Johnson's score, but this will have to get my vote for him:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLVtbaPyoB8

For Kikuchi, I'll say this track. Perhaps not the entire thing, but that first segment at least (from the start, through 1:45). Gives me chills every time.

I'm curious to see everyone else's thoughts!

For Johnson, that's typically what most of us (fans of his score) tend to view as his best work concerning Z. If that's the best Kikuchi has to offer... yikes. (Although the first 35 seconds is perhaps the best I've ever heard out of him).

Ignoring plagiarism, Yamamoto's most popular work is "Battle Point Unlimited" and I'd say rightfully so. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMYt9sGOcTU

Now to choose a piece for Tokunaga is rather difficult due to how amazing GT's OST is. This https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWpGSIPG_jw or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsEtAWk5OQU maybe.

Faulconer Productions is also somewhat difficult, seeing the large variety of themes. The most popular is the SSJ3 power up theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4E83RKavUU. I'd have to say that or Paikuhan's theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wW47fFiKMg.
Most Dragon Ball fans are incapable of making a logically sound argument.

Kikuchi: The Monster Freeza Vs. The Legendary Super Saiyan
Yamamoto: Mind Power ... Ki
Tokunaga: Prologue~Mount Paozu
Faulconer: Goku's SSJ Theme
Johnson: SSJ3 Goku Vs. Janemba

I can't think of anything for Menza.

Tokunaga: Path to Power #42 (Man what happened to him? I wish he was composing for Super. It was a tough one between this and his other Path to Power scores, along with his rendition of Hitori Janai he did for GT)

Sumitomo: This soundtrack from Kai 2.0 (his rendition of Cha-la in Super and "Goku" from Kai 2.0 came close)

Yamamoto: Battle Point Unlimited (unfortunately, it was easy)

Kikuchi: M1420 (Probably the hardest one to choose. Son Goku is the strongest after all!! and Prologue & Subtitle II are probably my second picks, but it's hard to narrow it down so much)

Takaki: This from Ultimate Tenkaichi (he composed for the cutscenes, right? Anyway, I like his work on the pre-Sumitomo stuff, I'd definitely love to see more of him)

Faulconer Productions: SS3 Theme (It's from my understanding that this was composed by Julius Dobos? Either way, it was very easy to choose a score from Faulconer Productions)

I don't know much about the other composers. Nathan Johnson composed for Movie 12, right? If so, then I pick the theme that plays when Goku and Vegeta fuse correctly.

Yamamoto was an arranger on that track, not composer. The composer was Chiho Kiyo’oka.

Just double checked and you are right. Looks like I was little misinformed. My mistake.

I guess Yamamoto's Magnum Opus would have to be Battle Power Unlimited.

I really couldn't say for Kikuchi. The sheer amount of music makes it hard to narrow down. If I were forced to choose, I'd probably go with the movie 1 score.

For Yamamoto, even though this never appeared in Kai, its probably the piece of music I associate most with him, and as far as I know, is actually a unique composition of his-Hikari no Will Power/Trunks from Ultimate Battle 22.

And Sumitomo sucks, so I don't care. All his stuff is boring as crap.

I'll go with what I know:

Bruce Faulconer: Ginyu Transformation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCwQmCHeU7E

Julius Dobos: SSJ3 Power Up
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efR4kpts6eg

Mike Smith: Vegeta's Theme (the original version)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foPvJV_WNVE

Kenji Yamamoto\Propaganda --> Battle Point Unlimited/The Murder of Love
(Yamamoto) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMYt9sGOcTU
(Propaganda) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPaFpyZQJdw

Iconic stuff.

Iconicness aside, I think this is Mike's most amazing composition. He blew me the eff away with this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uC5ui6ZKSPk
It's amazing writing and is soo dark <3
1:23 is my favorite part. I wrote a short\weak extension to that section later on...falling short admittedly and couldn't keep it going ( called Cell Transforms)

(also thanks to Sayo-chan for mentioning one of my own tracks =) )

Kikuchi: Cooler Transforms/Vegeta Super Saiyan

Faulconer Productions: Gohan Powers Up

Kenji Yamamoto: This was tough, because I mostly love his VG music, but this one from Kai is my fav! Frantic Cover

Nathan Johnson: Only one ever really stands out to me. This, and stuff from Movie 12. Zarbon lays a Beating

Mark Menza: Probably the only good track he made. Ultimate Android Awakens!

Don't have a favorite for the others... so there you go.

This has become the most grand and bombastic track in the whole series for me right about now. Atleast for Sumitomo. I can't imagine Takaki or Yamamoto composing anything like this. You gotta give it to him this time.

Yes! I was feelin' this hard when I watched. Nothing really stands out for me with Sumitomo, but this was wild.
