Definitely, it's one of my personal favorites. It's reminiscent of the choral pieces of Miklos Rosza for Classic Biblical films.

Why does everyone seems to hate Kai Final Chapters' soundtrack? Some of the songs were bad placed in some times, but a good part of them are super catchy, like this:

While there are some questionable tracks in Buu kai, I do think it's 70% good. But had some abysmal placement, for example, the first track, while it has a very catchy tune, it was used when Trunks and Goten rushed in to Buu while Vegeta was getting savagely beaten up!. Talk about unfitting!. Sumitomo's music was taken VERY out of context many times.

For example, if this was played during Goten and Trunks battles, or anything not extremely serious (like goku vs majin vegeta) everybody would freaking love this piece because it's cheerful as fuk. But thanks to abysmal placement, everyone hates it.

I agree that the placement in the scenes that you said were terribles. However, in other way, Kai 2.0 had some amazing soundtrack placed scenes, like that:

Or that:

Or that:

Yeah, I've really been enjoying his music for this new arc. If he hadn't stepped his game up, we might've had a chance at sending him the way of Yamamoto...

I love Sumitomo's music this arc! His previous tracks sound like they belong in a video game.

The little I've heard from Sumitomo wasn't great IMO. I wish if Shun Kikuchi has to retire then the other composers do their best to emulate him. I mean, Dragon Ball without Kikuchi is kind of like Star Wars without John Williams.

"My opinion of Norihito's Sumitomo's new score is... well, very mixed. The stuff that's good is pretty darn good, but the stuff that's bad makes elevator music sound like Jerry freaking Goldsmith." -Kenisu

Sumitomo hasn't been good until the most recent arc. Before that, it was meh at best, and it still doesn't live up to Kikuchi. I disagree that any new composers should try to emulate Kikuchi though. This is a new age of Dragon Ball, with new people working in their own styles. Letting people express the best of their styles, musical or otherwise, combined with good direction, is what will make a good product.

Is this a Sumitomo appreciation thread? Because I'd like that! And speaking of which, I love his score for Resurrection 'F' and Super! (I haven't listened to BOG or even heard Kai.) I don't understand all the hate it gets.

We're not turning this into an appreciation thread, are we~

Kai was pretty bad, the movies and Super were pretty meh until recently. So no, we aren't turning it into an appreciation thread.

In your opinion. The "appreciation" part is for those who "appreciate" it! :P

I "appreciate" well-made, well-placed music.

I don't get your point here... Anyway, I don't want to make another thread just to get redirected to this one, so I'd like it to be a thread for those who DO like Sumitomo's score. Unless the moderators wouldn't mind me making another one.

Anyone who wants to praise the score can do so just fine here, it still follows the parameters of the topic.

They should make more music in the style of Episode of Bardock. It had a Kikuchi feel and still felt modern enough.

I'm pretty sure the music for that ova was just recycled from ultimate tenkaichi and plan to eradicate the super saiyans.

Kai was partly the fault if the placement too but the tracks were still garbage tier. Super was serviceable until the Black arc. Movie scores I would say were above serviceable but ultimately weren't that great, I'd say they were just about good.

As I've said many times, it sounds like it belongs in a video game. Although Sumitomo's music is cheap, it would definitely work if given proper context.

This video here, proves that if Toei bans Sumitomo from synths percussion libraries and lets him cut loose with his emotional and serious tracks, he would be the best composer in dragon ball since kikuchi, well, to be fair, I haven't heard one percussion library or synth (To be fair, the Zamasu theme is synth, but it's a good kind of synth, unlike some of his other stuff) on his score for FT Arc in Super. And it is on par with his other works.
