Episode #0400! VegettoEX invites a few friends of the show to look back at our past. Kirbopher pops in to reminisce about the podcast, its strengths and weaknesses, and what the future holds for us. Greg Werner then joins us for an interview about discovering the Dragon Ball series in America in the mid-1990s, developing one of the early fansites, navigating the increasingly-hostile and confusing fandom, writing for Beckett's magazine, and making the transition to professional One Piece fandom. Here's to another 400 episodes!

SEGMENTS:
00:13 - Reflection on 400 podcast episodes w/ Kirbopher
24:09 - Interview w/ Greg Werner
1:12:50 - Closing

400 is a big, round number that deserves some kind of acknowledgement, so here's an episode!

Man, hard to believe you guys have been doing this for 400 episodes! During the original run of Dragon Ball, you'd be well into GT by now! :P

It was interesting to hear you guys reminisce about the old days of Dragon Ball fandom in America. I remember kids all the time on the playground talking about Dragon Ball Z and GT (this was back in the late '90s/early '00s). I also remember kids thinking that AF was real, including my friend's younger brother. Good times...

Here's to 400 more episodes!

If you go by years, then yeah, they would be in GT territory, but by number of episodes no, they are at Z ep 247, Goku teaching the fusion dance lol.
Anyway, congratulations! I'm a new listener, but i liked every podcast i've listened to so far. I've listened to eps 100, 200 and 300 to hype this up lol. I've missed so many great episodes but i went through the most famous ones that were recommended in that 1 thread. Keep up the good work, guys!

It is so much fun to listen to fans talk about how they first got introduced to Dragon Ball. It's like we have all experienced that together, even though we all got into Dragon Ball at different times, were miles apart, and didn't know of each other's existence.

I can't remember how I found Daizenshuu EX (probably via Temple O' Trunks, if I had to guess), but I do know I was visiting the site before it had a podcast. One of the earliest episodes that sticks out in my mind is #0011, about Trunks-related music. That's definitely one I've listened to more than once. Later on I very much enjoyed the Manga Reviews of Awesomeness, especially when I got my own hands on the manga and was able to read along (and stare at the amazing artwork).

I'm happy to have been around for all those years and podcast episodes. Here's to many many more!

Listening to this made me realize how much time has flown by. I started listening around episode #140 (when the English Daizenshuu was first starting to come out) and I went back and listened to every episode prior. I was in 6th(!!) grade at the time, and after listening to this I left for a college class. I remember the announcement of the US Dragon Boxes like yesterday, and it was nearly 7 years ago that they were announced. I feel like I've grown up with this show, and I feel like I know more about everybody that has been on this show than I ever should!

Listening to Greg's discovery of the series was so fascinating, because I had never heard anybody get into it that way. I discovered the show around 2000 (again, way too young to probably be watching a show like this), so I've got nothing on y'all.

Thank you guys for 400 fantastic episodes, and here's to 400 more. And then 400 more.

Aw crap, you're right. I was thinking that DB, DBZ, and DBGT all together is 444, but it's only DB and Z together that make 444. They're getting close to the end of Z though! I wonder if they'll use GT interlude songs once they get to Episode #445.

I haven't been able to listen yet, but did they comment on when the next episode of the GT Review of Awesomeness was coming out?

Seriously, congratulations on 400 episodes! Now onward and upward to 500! I'm hoping that for THAT interview, you manage to get Akira Toriyama himself. ;)

400 episodes, eh guys? Normally one would be done out of loss of interest instead of lasting this long, especially when we are talking about something as an 30 year old niche (?) franchise with a fanbase so diverse in opinion. If we didn't have Kai, the new movies or Super it'd be more impressive talking about a thing that didn't bring something new for over ten to twenty years but all of the new stuff sure made it even more relevant to modern times and it helped bring in new audience.

My story with Dragon Ball was a bit similar with getting into it for being a fan of something and became a fan of Dragon Ball for reminding me of the old anime I've been a fan of before. You can read more details in my 500th post.

While I didn't get the pleasure to watch it on local TV as much as the rest of you, my fondest memory was sitting at lunch time and we would watch the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai episodes and we were making speculations on who would win, and we all thought Goku is sure to win since he's the main character and main characters never lose. That thought was destroyed when we saw him actually lose against Muten Roshi and we were really surprised it actually happened. And that's pretty much it unless you count all the Budokai 2 and 3 fun time playing it together with my brother and cousins.

Long live Dragon Ball, and long live Kanzenshuu.

Mike,

Listening to this episode made me extremely nostalgic for the old days. I ran a website myself from 1999-2002, Masenko! Manga, among the myriad hundreds of DBZ fansites out there. Needless to say, this episode really took me back because I remember all these sites you guys talked about and it made me miss that era of the Internet.

Anyways, I remember "interviewing" you via email around 2001; Daizenshuu EX was definitely one of my favorite pages at the time. I've tried so hard scouring through my old Tripod page trying to find that interview... But I think it was lost to the ravages of time. I clearly remember starting off with "as you know, my page 'Masenko! Manga' means 'take this! Manga.'" Wow. Anyways, the closest I've found is my old "editorials" page where I wrote, in April 2001, that I was still awaiting your response. Ha! Anyways, it's been 15 years but I hope you enjoy the screenshot and thanks once again for the walk down memory lane this episode.

I was kinda hoping for more of the crew since it's the big 400 but it was still great nonetheless!

¡Felicitaciones!

It's hard to imagine a whooping 400 episodes of the podcast, but it had to happen sooner or later. Even having nothing to do with it, it still feels amazing. A trip down memory lane is exactly what the 400th episode should be devoted to. I am very glad I decided to come back to Daizenshuu/Kanzenshuu when I did. Here's to you all.

There was a website a long time ago devoted to nailing every single dub edit or dialogue alteration. I think it's worth looking at one more time, for old time's sake. http://dbzu.3gkai.com/

Now that's a blast from the past! I remember that website inspiring me to seek out the Japanese dub instead.

This was an excellent episode, and Greg Werner is a hell of a guy. Loved what he had to say about following your dreams.

No matter how many times I visit the various old websites and read about the fandom and webmaster drama and treatment of the franchise at that time, I really don't get sick of hearing you guys talk about the old days.

I just recently discovered you guys and I really wish I had found you guys sooner. I'm only 17 so I didn't have experience with anything similar to the Link's page, but I wish I did because the site by itself, its history, is so interesting. Congratulations!

I've been coming to this site since 1998 or 99 when I was in elementary school and I learned a lot of valuable information (and apparently some misinformation) from Greg's site, too. This episode was a nice remembrance of that time. Thanks.

Still have a few of those Beckett magazines, and I always did a double take when I recognized your name. Trippy how you started there and now are working for Shueisha.
