The International Version of the Buu-Kai Arc

Post by TheBlackPaladin » Tue Jun 17, 2014 11:14 am

OK, so....mods, I apologize in advance if there's already a thread talking about this. I couldn't find one, but if there is one and I missed it, then of course feel free to lock this thread and point me in the right place.

However, after reading the front page of Kanzenshuu this morning, it came to my attention that the Buu-Kai arc ("The Final Chapters," as it's being called) began airing internationally already, this time in Korea. Apparently, there are even scenes that were not in the Japanese broadcast. So I figured I would make a thread where people can point out differences in the international version as they become apparent.

So, first off...a question. Has that ugly green tint been fixed in the international version? Oh, and actually, what about the aspect ratio?

EDIT: I've changed the title of the tread (specifically, by taking out the "(/Korean)" part). At the time that I made this thread, it wasn't immediately clear if this different version was something completely unique to Korea or if this really was the version that every place other than Japan would get...the production of this arc in Kai, as I'm sure we all know by now, has been something of a disorganized mess, and one that many times has no official explanations from Toei. In any event, since the French dub has started airing, and is identical to the version aired in Korea, it is now apparent that this is not a Korea-unique thing. So, by all means, feel free to start discussing the international version of the Buu-Kai arc as it applies to any of the international versions--Korean, French, English (eventually), and even the Japanese-language track of the international version that we know we're eventually going to get when the bilingual home video releases come out!

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

This is currently being discussed in the main Buu Saga Kai thread. But to answer your question, it looks like the green tint isn't present in The Final Chapters.

Personally, I'm more worried about the theme songs. We've had it confirmed that the Sumitomo score is in the International Version (makes sense to do a new score when the rest of the world IS keeping it) but there's no reason to do new Japanese theme songs for an international market, especially the supposed multiple ending themes. I theorize that these new theme songs were made after the decision to air the Buu arc in Japan. This is supported by the fact that the Sumitomo score, so far, does not contain any versions of the theme songs, except for a cheaply done rendition of the opening in the Next Episode Preview, which may have been a last minute addition. It would be really lame if they just stuck to the first opening and one of the previous endings, at least in my opinion. My hope is that they've added them to the International Version as well, but we haven't been able to confirm it yet.

There haven't been a thread but there's been talk of it. I contacted my Korean side family. Here's the quote from a different thread.

My family only watches it via YouTube. We later talk on phone. According to Hyung there is not green tint however it's darker(?). So we got a darker version instead of a green tint? Weird IMO. Summaito score is in according to him. I didn't ask bout the dubbing of opening. I'm stupid. There is some filler.

Somebody did point out that there's more breathing space in this version. I haven't seen it, but apparently the Japanese version cuts shots at EVERY opportunity they get. It's like the time edits in a 4Kids anime, where they shave off frames from shots everywhere, in addition to removing stuff for time purposes, like the old Ocean dub of DBZ. This constant removing may have also thrown the placement of the score off, which has lead a few to believe the placement may be better in The Final Chapters. I'm usually pretty accepting of any scores (as someone who actually likes the American soundtracks) so I don't think I'd have a problem with it either way. I just wonder why everyone's so worried about a mere color error when the theme songs could be at stake. :?

It's on Tooniverse as well. That's where the original Kai aired as well.

What about the aspect ratio? Were Korean audiences lucky enough to get a 4:3 version?

3 different Korean dubs? I don't think so. It's just different networks airing the same series by the looks of it.

Korea had 3 different DBZ dubs.
Champ dub
Tooniverse(started at Freeza)
SBS

Besides some changes Toonivere and Champ had same voice actors. Toonivere was just more uncut. Champ dubbed every series and movies. SBS got canceled Toonivere dubbed Freeza to gt I think. However Kai got only one dub.

Whoa, that sounds complicated. :?

So, any word on theme songs yet? I've been worrying about this while everybody else has been worrying about the green tint and aspect ratio. Although kei17 has now noted on the main thread that it is in fact very unlikely that the International Versions have the new themes. Which would really suck. It might even be a deal breaker for me. As I said, it depends on how late the decisions were made to air it in Japan.

If you didn't know he told me(I posted on boo arc thread) that from what he can tell on the videos the tint is not there but it's darker

16:3? Haven't heard that one before. What's this clip from? Is it a fansub? Oh, interesting. Korea also has a man voicing adult Gohan.
