Discussion specifically regarding the "refreshed" TV version of DBZ created in Japan for its 20th anniversary, including individual threads for each episode.
Theophrastus wrote:JJBA's broadcast is still in Phantom Blood/Part 1, which is generally regarded as the weakest part of the series. I wouldn't worry about it just yet.
I see people who saw Part 1 of Jojo and admit that the show was not as they hope for. They went in expecting the stuff from Part 3 which made the series more well known outside of Japan. It's like watching the Pilaf saga and expecting Goku to go SSj and fight with ki blast.

I predicting for Super to pull a 2.0 or higher with it's debut episode. Especially since it's airing on a prime-time slot.

I doubt the primetime slot will do well, its always the midnight slot that gets the juicy ratings. Because remember, the midnight slot has the strength of Family Guy behind it, while not so popular CN shows precede the 8PM slot.

I also think the 11:30pm slot will do better since NFL playoffs start on Saturday the 7th which for some wont matter but for a lot of people it will. by the time the 11:30pm airing is on that primetime wild card game should be over.

The marathon did as well as you would expect a marathon for a niche anime to perform on New Years Eve. Even by DBZ standards.

DBZ is not niche. You may have meant to say niche BLOCK. But you are right, its a bad night. But those in charge of Toonami know that. That's why its a marathon instead of new episodes.
Now if this week underperforms THEN we are in trouble.

DBZ is still a niche show in the West. Dragon Ball (Z) is a monster franchise in Japan. Everywhere else in the world, it's quite secondary in popularity. Yeah, it has a cult following in Latin America and the US but that's still small potatoes to the recognition Dragon Ball(Z) has in its home country.

Speak for yourself! Or the USA at least. DBZ is mega huge internationally. And its far from niche.
Hey, even in the USA it reaches like 2 million at midnight that's nothing to scoff at!

It may be about as mainstream as an anime can get, but as far as shows in general go it's definitely niche now
Just because it was a huge hit back in the day doesn't mean it's still mainstream now
Ok you are right. It may not be mainstream but its still pretty popular LOL.

Dragon Ball Z isn't a niche, sure it might not be as popular as it once was, but it certainly isn't a niche. Anyways, I can't wait to see the ratings for Super and Buu Saga Kai, I expect Super to do exceptionally well with that 8pm slot.

DBZ is in no way a nich show in the west. Obviously not as big as in Japan, but it's still huge over here.
DBZ is still popular, but not as big as it was nearly 20 years ago. Even DBZ was consider to be a dead franchise during the mid-late 2000's since every show's popularity dies off. Nothing stays hot forever.
Its a bit silly to say that just because its not as popular as it used its niche. Its an evergreen franchise. New fans come and go by the minute!

I doubt Super will pull of newer fans like DBZ. There are way too many better anime to compete. Kids nowadays can watch anything they want unlike 20 years ago when DBZ was one of the few anime available on TV (internet wasn't available to grade schoolers and certainly not fast enough to stream)
Toyotarō: … I get the feeling I’ve just heard something amazing (laughs). Lord Beerus and Whis turn up in Dragon Ball Super, and have become an unsurpassable wall for Goku and the gang. What do the two of them mean to you?
Toriyama: Well… First off, right now I don’t have any plans for Goku and Vegeta to surpass Beerus and Whis.
Yeah, but DBZ has some sort of Star Wars Popularity thing that despite being a bit outdated its still the fanfavorite. And keep in mind many of the anime that are seen as superior than DBZ are all airing alongside DB. Series like One Punch Man, Hunter X Hunter, Jojo all cant compare to DBZ in ratings and those are airing right now.
I know DB isnt as big as it used to but its still the most profitable anime ever.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure also made it to the Top 10 Original Cable Telecasts with 900,000 viewers. Dragon Ball Super (11:30pm slot) got 1,369,000 Million beating out the 8pm slot by 306,000 views.

I'm curious how many copies would sell DB super manga volume 1 In the us
