Best Version of 16:9 DBZ Kai.

Post by simtek34 » Mon Feb 20, 2017 4:00 pm

I know there are the JP DVD's, the French and German releases, etc... but what is the best version of Kai 1.0 in Widescreen available now?

The Blu-Rays cropped using the "zoom" feature on your TV.

It's not the same as the actual selective cropping on the 16:9 Kai footage.

I was about to say this is a good point you make but yes Bansho64 is the one making a good point instead. So I suppose best version of 16:9 DBZ Kai would be to buy the blurays, make sure you have a bluray drive for your PC. Rip the blurays and do your own manual croppings. Then render them as uncompressed avi so you don't lose quality and put onto a USB memory stick and watch on a game console or smart TV.

Honestly, I think just zooming in on your TV like TheQuazz said should be good enough, and not as much hassle as manually ripping and putting together your own custom crop.
It won't look incredible, but it'll be good enough.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Honestly, I personally wouldn't even say it's good enough. The tops and bottoms are basically cut off and you can't see a lot of people's heads and entire shots are butchered. I ain't saying it's horrible, but I wouldn't really say it gets the job done.

Eh, it's not much worse than Toei's official 16:9 crops of it.

I don't know, the official looks pretty great to me.

They're okay. They still have a very "Croppy" look(As in, you can tell it's framed a lot tighter than it should be).

You can't just zoom in on 4:3 Kai and expect it to look nearly as good as Toei's cropping. In addition to not getting the extra 5% of footage on the sides of the remastered footage, some scenes were specifically redrawn for the Fuji TV/ Japanese DVD version.

That actually looks pretty nice. It would've been cool to own a version with shots like those on Blu-ray, but I wouldn't want the rest of it cropped, and it would be distracting to have the aspect ratio changing back and forth.

Let me rephrase what I meant. The best OFFICIAL RELEASE (none of my own cropping or matching up to Japanese TV raws) of TOEI's OWN Dragon Ball Kai 16:9 that was on Japanese DVD, and what some countries got.

I'd say, go with the original JPN DVDs, if you're trying to get it with the Yamamoto score. The score only goes up to episode 72 though.

But, if you want the Kikuchi score, go with the French release.

I'll try that. Or can I use the Yamamoto Revival Project to rip the Yamamoto score with it?

Yamamoto Revival only covers the English dub.

Although, from what I've heard, the Yamamoto score aired in Japan all the way up to #95, so there's probably someone out there who has those.

(As a side-note, Yamamoto Revival could never be done on the Japanese version, since it was in stereo. English was in 5.1, with all the voices and SFX isolated in the centre channel, meaning the guy was able to just grab that, and add Yamamoto's music from the released CDs and such to get that working. But with the Japanese version in stereo, this isn't possible)

Considering that this is English dub footage of the Cell Games with Yamamoto's score, is that even official cropping?

Yeah, it is. I compared the original Kai broadcast footage to it without sound for a long time with different monitors and it's the same footage with the same cropping. I ain't sure how, but I'm guessing the guy took footage from the Japanese DVDs and synced it to English dub with the Yamamoto score.

Out of curiosity, what credits do the French and German Blu-Rays use? I know the English Blu-Rays have their own credits, but do either the French or German Blu-Rays retain Japanese credits?

Sorry about my above post. I (incorrectly) assumed that you were one of those people that just wanted a widescreen release in the best quality possible regardless of framing.

French BDs have French credits, and also occasionally a hardsub here and there (signs). No idea about German anything.
