Wiki: Style Manual/Images

Post by Hujio » Tue Dec 10, 2013 1:10 am

This discussion will be one of many on-going threads that will be created by Kanzenshuu administrators in the "Staff Help Requests" area. The first post in this thread will be regularly updated by an administrator based on the community feedback and discussion. We are asking for your help in developing what will be the structure -- NOT THE ACTUAL CONTENT -- of various pages throughout the wiki. If you are interested in contributing to the wiki, right now this is the best way for you to do it. For additional information about the wiki, please read this topic.

Please keep your responses even more neatly-written, clear, and concise than we already expect elsewhere on the forum.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

The following is a rough draft of the images portion of the wiki's style manual. Please review and post additional comments or suggestions you feel will improve this manual.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Image Preferences
Images and photographs on the wiki are meant to accompany pages in a complimentary fashion and are not meant to overwhelm or become the focal point of any page. Supplemental images should be used with some discretion, and only when warranted to help illustrate or document information. Image galleries should be avoided to negate unnecessary clutter.

Format
There is no hard-set rule or guideline in place for which image format to use, but it is strongly recommended that the lossless PNG image file format be utilized in place of the lossy JPEG format. If a PNG version of an image or photograph is not available, then the highest quality JPEG available will be considered an acceptable substitute. GIF file formats should be avoided as much as possible, unless an animated version is necessary. Animated GIF files should be short and concise, covering only the material relevant to the correlating page content.

Japanese vs Other Languages
Emphasis will be placed on the original Japanese version, as it is the single "global" version that can be enjoyed by all, and is the primary focus of Kanzenshuu as a whole. Images from the original Japanese version (manga and anime) are preferred across the wiki, unless not applicable in certain situations where a specific dialogue is required. All images, no matter their language, must come from an officially licensed release; scanlations or fansubs will not be tolerated.

Manga Priority
Manga images will have priority over images from the anime. All images included from the manga should come from the Japanese Kanzenban release, unless not applicable in certain situations. Images from the anime will only have priority over manga images on anime-related pages, such as episode or movie pages. All images and screen shots included from the anime should come from a Dragon Box release, unless not applicable in certain situations. The following rules will apply for manga and/or anime images:
  • Only single cells or single pages from the manga are permitted; do not upload entire chapters.
  • If image tabs are utilized in an infobox, the manga image should always be listed before the anime image (when applicable).
  • All characters, items, locations, or techniques that are not original to the anime will use manga images in their accompanying infobox (when applicable).
Image Specifications

Stock Artwork
Size: Variable; should be no larger than 1000 pixels in height or width.
Format: Original source format; PNG preferred if available.
  • Stock artwork may be used from other websites. When using stock artwork from other websites, be sure to credit the source website.
  • Avoid any alteration to stock artwork, except for re-sizing.
  • Stock artwork should be made by official sources. If no such artwork is available, artwork by non-official sources may be used with permission.
Screen Shot
Size: 320x240 (4:3 fullscreen) / 426x240 (16:9 widescreen)
Format: PNG
  • Screen shots taken and provided by a Kanzenshuu user are highly preferred over ones taken from other websites. If, however, no other screen shots are currently available, ones from other websites may be used until a user-created or otherwise improved screen shot is provided. When using screen shots from other websites, be sure to credit the source website.
  • Screen shots taken directly from home video releases are preferred over those taken using any other method.
  • Minimal alteration of screen shots are preferred. Any changes should attempt to preserve the original content and quality of the image. In the case of notably low-quality screen shots, however, alterations which increase the quality of the screen shot are acceptable.
Scan
Size: Variable; should be no larger than 1000 pixels in height or width.
Format: PNG
  • Scans created and provided by a Kanzenshuu user are highly preferred over ones taken from other websites. If, however, no other scans are currently available, ones from other websites may be used until a user-created or otherwise improved scan is provided. When using scans from other websites, be sure to credit the source website.
  • Scans are preferred over photos taken with a camera. However, in the event that scans are not currently available, quality photos are acceptable replacements until an appropriate scan is made available.
  • Minimal alteration of scans are preferred. Any changes should attempt to preserve the original content and quality of the image. In the case of notably low-quality scans, however, alterations which increase the quality of the scan are acceptable.
  • Monochrome publications should be scanned in a grayscale mode, while full color publications should be scanned in an RGB mode.
Photograph
Size: Variable; should be no larger than 1000 pixels in height or width.
Format: PNG or JPEG
  • Photographs made and provided by a Kanzenshuu user are highly preferred over ones taken from other websites. If, however, no photographs are currently available, ones from other websites may be used until a user-created or otherwise improved photograph is provided. When using photographs from other websites, be sure to credit the source website.
  • Minimal alteration of photographs are preferred. Any changes should attempt to preserve the original content and quality of the image. In the case of notably low-quality photographs, however, alterations which increase the quality of the photograph are acceptable.
Animation
Size: Variable; should be no larger than 200 pixels in height or width.
Format: GIF
  • Images should only be animated if the animation is helpful and informative in some manner.
  • Animated image files should be short and concise, covering only the material relevant to the correlating page content.
Standard Image Practices
Kanzenshuu does not seek to store every Dragon Ball-related image on the internet, but rather those relevant to the information provided by the wiki. Users with uploading privileges are expected to abide by the follow standard practices set forth by the administration:
  • Images should have a descriptive but concise file name.
  • Image summary pages should contain source information.
  • Images must be tagged with the appropriate license.
  • Images should be used on at least a single wiki page.
  • Images should be relevant.
  • Images for personal user pages are not allowed.
  • Images should not be direct-linked from other sites.
  • Kanzenshuu is not an image hosting service.
Prohibited Images
The following types of images are prohibited and will be deleted without warning by an administrator:
  • Scanlations
  • Fansubs
  • Watermarked images and/or scans
  • Doctored images
  • Fanart (unless approved by an administrator)
  • Personal image files unrelated to the wiki
  • Obscene, pornographic, or profane images from non-official sources
Relevant or necessary images that fall under one of these possible categories will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis by the administration.

Uploading Images
All autoconfirmed community members with editing and publishing privileges will be able to upload images via the Special:Upload page. A user account will become autoconfirmed after a certain number of edits have been performed and the account has existed for a set period of time. Both of these values are not public knowledge to ensure that users actually contribute to wiki and do not purposely perform unnecessary edits to become autoconfirmed. Before uploading an image, please read the above image preferences and standard practices.

The following image formats can be uploaded: PNG, JPEG, and GIF.

Licensing
All images uploaded to the wiki must contain an appropriate license. These licenses can be selected when the file is initially uploaded, or added manually shortly thereafter with an image tag. Although the majority of the images uploaded to the wiki will fall under the terms of fair use, users should ensure the proper license is listed. Any image found with no accompanying license will be deleted. If a user is unsure which license an image falls under, try looking at similar images.

I'm glad that the images will primarily be from the Japanese Kanzenban.

Why are the screenshot sizes so limited? I can imagine the reason, but a clarification would be nice.

Wow, manga pictures prevail over anime pictures, that's the dream!
I agree that the Japanese Kanzenban should be the one to use as it shows the original drawing as fully intended by the author back then.

However, I do think that one Full-Color Manga picture should be shown when relevant, since those are now the official and definitive "manga colors" and the latest (and final?) update to the manga. Possibly show both the original black and white and the final color version of a panel when relevant, so the note says "as depicted in the original and updated versions of the manga".

Or perhaps for the first info-box picture: while all pictures in an article could easily be from the black and white Kanzenban, it would be more appealing to have the "presentation" picture introducing the article showcasing the character/item in the manga with the official colors. Or that's what I think anyway.

Well, Toei's colors are also "official", so I can imagine why avoiding adding Full-Color Manga's examples just to show a colorified version -- which wasn't done by the original author, I may add -- would be put to consideration. Of course a color comparison page would be great.
