I know, I know, I just thought that was funny is all!

By the way, to some of you guys who think that all this is happening because Toei couldn't secure a TV deal in the US, it should be noted that Portugal and South Africa are getting DBS streamed too, and both currently have TV deals (Portugal via SIC and South Africa's case via Cartoon Network Africa). Don't fret, I'm sure that the stream is to tide over sub fans who want the episodes right now and will have no bearing on wheather or not Funimation will continue to look for a broadcaster for their dub (or as far as we know they already have secured a TV deal and just haven't told us yet!)

It's very different from being able to watch through all episodes online whenever you want, though...

The One Piece subtitles are honestly not very good either. I mean they get the point across as to what is happening in the story, but they're filled to the brim with incredibly awkward phrasing and hardly ever seem to properly incorporate how characters speak beyond if they have a verbal tic. Like, you get stuff like Tamago's random French at the end of his lines, or the Minks' incredibly awkward personal pronouns... but if you took a random Luffy-line and a random Robin-line and quoted them out of context without saying who said what, it'd be very hard to tell because the subtitles don't really reflect the fact that the two have entirely different ways of speaking.

...So personally I'm hoping for something a bit higher than One Piece level. Mind you I'd still be content with One Piece level too because at least this way the constant spread of mistranslated speedsubs is almost certain to stop... but just speaking as a guy who likes his subtitles to be faithful not just to the literal words being said, but also to how they are said, and presented in a way that reads like something a native English-speaker would actually say... I would like for them to be a bit above merely "One Piece level".

But the only thing I'm gonna demand is that they not be Sailor Moon Crystal level, because man were Toei's subtitles for Sailor Moon Crystal utter garbage. I actually find it hard to recommend that show just because of how bad the subtitles are. (Well, for the reasonably good season 3 anyway. I have other, much more substantial reasons why seasons 1 and 2 are hard to recommend, that being that it was just an all around terrible product.)

That sums up my thoughts on Toei's One Piece subtitles pretty well. They aren't bad and convey the meaning of lines accurately...but they're very "textbook" and don't do much to account for natural phrasing or different styles of speech. Also sometimes you get silly things like "Otousama" being rendered as "Father-sama" instead of just "Father".

Oddly I seem to remember the subtitles for Sailor Moon Crystal season 2 being noticeably better than seasons 1 or 3 (though still not great). That was kinda weird.

But it does make sense from a business perspective. If you're a French or Italian channel that's paid for the rights to broadcast DB Super it's in your best interest not to have all the episodes simultaneously streamed online in your native language. At that point people will avoid the television broadcast altogether and binge the show online.

They probably had a deal in place with Toei to prevent this from happening in their country, or at least until their broadcast is over.

But if you go by that logic, why does Portugal get this stream for free?

Not sure, maybe the portuguese network doesn't care or maybe they're the only place to watch it dubbed.

This will air the same time as when the streams do right?
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

There's one problem in these countries listed in the press release since some entities don't exist:
Aland Islands, Albania, Antarctica, Ascension Island, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegowina, BQ Bonaire, British Indian Ocean Territory, Bulgaria, Canada, Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Cook Islands, Croatia (Hrvatska), Curacao, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), Faroe Islands, Finland, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Gambia, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Guernsey, Heard and McDonald Islands, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey, Kiribati, Latvia, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles, New Zealand, Niue, Norfolk Island, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Saint Martin (French part), Serbia, Sint Eustatius en Saba, Slovakia (Slovak Republic), Slovenia, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Spain, St. Helena, Svalbard And Jan Mayen Islands, Sweden, Tokelau, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, Virgin Islands (British), Yugoslavia
Yugoslavia: The country doesn't even exist since 2006 even after the Socialist Federation fell apart in 1992. Five of its six republics sans Kosovo are listed.
Libyan Arab Jamahiriya: Muammar Gaddafi made this Libyan state rich until he was killed in a revolt back in 2011. The civil war since broke out.
Netherlands Antilles: Dismantled in 2010.

How in the hell they listed these states that are defunct? Good thing South Korea or Philippines isn't listed yet.

Probably just mistakes, I assume it will play just fine in those regions.

It should stream as soon as the episode ends, because One Piece airs at 8:30PM EST on TV in Japan, and streams on Crunchyroll at 9:00PM EST

So I'm checking this right now, and there's nothing there. Is it yet to happen, or have I missed it? The page isn't very clear.

Hm, it looks like it won't be until 9PM EST. The One Piece simulcast in my queue was saying 1 hour at 8PM, so I assumed that they all aired as soon as they ended on TV in Japan. I usually don't watch them as soon as they get posted ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
