Dragon Ball Super: TV Ratings Discussion Thread

Post by Bullza » Sat Jul 04, 2015 10:34 pm

I won't be surprised if the 1st episode is #1 but in terms of it lasting longer that'll depend on the merchandise sales which have been good for awhile so if the anime is good then chances are the sales will go up even further.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

I really can't wait to see some ratings on this show. I expect the first two episodes to be an all-time high, with ratings progressively decreasing by episode 4 or 5, and becoming stagnant during the BoG arc. I predict they will truly spike up by the F arc if it's executed and built up well.

Just a hunch.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

I hope the ratings will be better then GT. I don't know how good the buzz for GT when it first started in 1996? There is a huge gab between 1996 and 2015 since technology is much different now. In 1996, the Internet was still a new thing at the time and a lot of people didn't have access to the Internet at the time. Faster speed Internet started to become common in house holds when Internet started to become more cheaper and more common around 2002 or 2003 (not to the mention the birth of social media websites at that time). Also there was no social media websites, no streaming and any way for people to share videos back in 1996.

I think GT had poor ratings due to franchise fatiuge and a lot of fans seem to give up on the show pretty early on. I hope Super won't suffer the same.

I would love this to beat Sazae-san, but that's just a dream. If it does better than One Piece, I would already be happy, but even that its hard.
The only thing I'm sure is that Super will always being in top 10 and keep the legacy.

But anyway, Super already took the gold to me
I never saw so many people looking for streaming sites to watch an anime episode live. Usually most people, expect for subs to come out, but this time most people just didn't care. They jusy wanted to see it, not even caring if they understood it or not. Only Dragon Ball can cause this chaos. The entire world was waiting and they delivery it with a great start.

Props to Toriyama, Toei and Voice Actors.
A world without Dragon Ball is just meh.

Really looking forward to see how it does. Any idea when we'll get the ratings?

#1 is pretty much impossible. DB is One Piece's lead in, so OP always gets higher ratings. And there's Sazae-san, an anime that's been running for decades and gets first place every week, although as tv ratings in general are decreasing lately, Sazae seems to be suffering the most.

The last top 10 available looked like this:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... -21/.89718

Kai was usually #6 or #7. If Super can make the top five with ratings around 8.0, it's gonna be awesome already.

I reckon the ratings for the first episode will be superior to what GT gained it its first episode. But that's maybe being a bit too optimistic. But you never know with Dragon Ball. :)

Your acting in the first episode made my day, Lord Beerus :)

Oh, well thank you very much. :D

But the credit has to go to Toriyama. He wrote a pretty darn good script for me. :P

That's impossible too, tv ratings are much lower now than 20 years ago, since less people watch it live. GT's first episode got a 19.6, it would be a huge hit and by far the most viewed anime these days.

DB Super's timeslot isn't as good as Dragonball/Z/GT used to have, too. I read recently that One Piece's ratings grow about 50% if they include people who record the show to watch later, Super will probably be the same.
But i have no doubts it will do better than GT, proportionally speaking. Kai did that already, making the top 10 every week, where GT was only eventually.

I've heard ratings are always worse in the summer anyway, as people have more free time and stuff.

I'd expect the show on average to be ranked #5 or #6. Maybe with a 7.5ish rating or so.

On a completely off topic note, someone posted a link above for a previous weeks ratings and I see Yokai Watch is above Pokémon now. I've been hearing for a while how it's surpassed it in popularity and when I was in Japan I saw that red cat thing everywhere, far more than I saw anything to do with Pikachu

It'll be interesting to see whether Yokai Watch will take off in the rest of the world like Pokémon did.

Really? Well, that certainly doesn't translate well into sales. If I recall correctly, ORAS sold more in Japan than the recent Yokai Watch game, and ORAS is just a remake, which usually sells far less than the new generation games.

DBS would probably reach top 3 but thats about the best that it can reach imo, still I hope it will at least have 100 eps. DBS beating OP seems impossible now..

According to Famitsu's sales for 2014. Yokai Watch 2 Hanzo/Ganke sold 3 million copies and then a third version sold another 2 million copies. So 5 million total.

Pokémon ORAS sold 2.5 million copies. X and Y sold 4.5 million copies.

The Yokai Watch movie outgrossed all of the Pokémon movies which have been making less money each year now for a while. They're at their lowest now.

It's getting better ratings on TV. The Yokai Watch mascot replaced Pikachu in the World Hobby Fair Banner. McDonald's used to do yearly calendars for Pokémon but now they've replaced it with Yokai Watch instead.

There was even something about them putting Pikachu plushes into Yokai Watch merchandise bags in UFO catchers to get rid of them.

It's killing the franchise over there.

Killing is an overstatement, as you can see the Pokémon games still sell more if they're not simply remakes which usually sell less anyway, and just last year Pikachu & co were the mascots for Japan's national team in the World Cup; it's being beaten in some areas sure, but it's far from dying off.

Yokai Watch will likely be big over here in America if market it right. I think if the ratings suck then the show can go on if the toy sales are good. Kyoryuger is the worst rated Sentai show and the show had the biggest toy sales in 12 years since Gaoranger. If kids keep on buying Heroes cards, vinyl figures and candy toys then we should be fine.

Pokémon X and Y wasn't a remake and that sold worse too though. Yokai Watch 2 didn't come out until after the 2014 World Cup was over and that was the game that made the franchise take off.

It's not like it's dead but it is dying off and not that slowly.

The sales for the games are decreasing. The movies which had consistently been making over ¥4 billion for years are now failing to reach ¥3 billion. In a desperate attempt to boost them back up the latest movie has shoved in all the legendary Pokémon in there for some battle royale.

The TV Ratings which used to range from 5-6 a year ago have now dropped to between 3.5-4.5.

It's been replaced by McDonald's and other endorsements. Surely in merchandise found in arcades.

Yokai Watch is still a new thing too and it's already had this kind of effect on it. Give it time and it's only going to get even more popular and Pokémon will suffer even more.
