As for Gohan since it is planned it doesn't matter if you buy it or not. But the reason why Banpresto are doubling down on Cell arc Gohan is well back in 2016 with their RoS line SS2 Gohan was released before adult Future Gohan and unfortunately Future Gohan ended up getting half the amount of case orders than SS2 Gohan which at that point Banpresto presumably decided that any future Gohan commercialisation will be Cell arc one and not adult. Honestly our best chance for an adult Gohan is if someone picks him for the BWFC (they really need to bard entries for Goku tbh). Just gotta hope the figure gets mediocre case orders so Banpresto rethink but maybe at the cost of poor Piccolo though.
Out of curiosity, Is there any analysis/ info out there regarding which characters's merchandise sells and so on?

Regarding Gohan, I think he might not look distinct enough as an adult to get attention from general and casual fans, so his stuff might get bought by his fans and not that's about it? Cell Games Gohan, though, was not just his most iconic look, but he garnered more popularity than any other DB charater has ever gotten ( here I mean vote numbers).
Banpresto make their money selling case orders to JPN gamestations, as result they often play things safe so they can get good amount of case orders. That's why we have these Prize Fairs and why public can't attend (by invite only IIRC).

Japanese after market is important as while it doesn't affect how much money Banpresto get as they already made theirs but it will affect gamestations in deciding in the future of whether or not to put in high case orders for the line/character/form. Ie. If you go on the OP look for the DXF SUPER WARRIORS line each subsequent volume kept getting low and low in orders and then got cancelled. Banpresto did bring it back a few months later for UI but dropped DXF tag. Conversely the SON GOKU FES line will hit 10 volumes in June and even had a re-release, it gets good case orders and popular among fans will continue for a while.

Now Broly. The two figures Banpresto released had high case orders (Jan's one had the highest case orders of any DB figure!!) And high value on the after market which shows they were sought after HOWEVER Banpresto anticipated Broly wouldn't be as popular as Gogeta so for April's Grandista they scheduled Movie Gogeta not Broly. Banpresto plan things in advance so I am sure we'll probably get more Broly end of this year.

As for Gohan, his recent figures lately haven't beem doing well on the market. Grandista Cell arc Gohan came out in October and is yet to go up in price. Cell arc Gohan hasn't had relevancy for a while, and that is all that is ever released of Gohan so I get the low interest. ToP is over now so any opportunity for Adult Gohan is now gone them not simultaneously marketing DBS until Mastered UI was a huge misstep. The September case orders will decide Cell arc Gohan (and Piccolo since it's a shared volume) fate.

As for Piccolo the last August Match Makers did get good case orders but did terrible on the after and still available super cheap. BWFC Piccolo is out next month let's see how that affects those orders.

Not that surprised since it's a odd looking statue (and I'm someone that loves the 23rd fight-) The BWFC one looked decent but had the lowest vote count so.....

I'm surprised about Gohan though, I thought the TOP would've given him quite the boost.

If you wouldn't mind sharing, did, for example, Android 17 merchandise get a boost. I'm really curious about the correlation between screen time and merchandise sales. I;m not fond of the notion that toy sales influence the story, but I think it's fair to say that it plays a role.

#17 barely had anything significant just a few gashapon so can't really say. Guess we'll see how well March's Ichiban Kuji and April's release of the BWFC does but they are Z #17.

It does a play a role you are right for example SSGSS and SS3. SS3 isn't a popular form meanwhile SSGSS has become the mascot form of modern DB so it really was no surprise SS3 wasn't used much in DBS and SSGSS was over used. Or Goku being here there and everywhere.

But when it comes to other stuff it seems the merch dept aren't interested. It's taken about year for Evolution Vegeta to get rolling, even longer for blue shirt "Omen" Goku. Ikari Trunks wasn't treated as a new form but rather just SS2. U6 Saiyans you'd think they'd be given more stuff but nope, being Saiyans they are a lot less riskier than Jiren/Hit/Zamasu. The marketing of DBS pre March 2018 was pretty shambolic, looks like the same might happen for DBS 2.0, given that Banpresto's big new DBS line for the summer is just Z filler.

Thanks a lot for the this.
Bandai is one of the major stakeholders as far as the anime is concerned so I'd assume they have a say in what goes on with the franchise. We joke about how DBS can't go an episode without Goku but given how the merchandise pretty much reflects that, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a suggestion from the marketing department.

I’ve said this before but Banpresto also does One Piece figures and their 100 times more creative and fun then anything we get for Dragon Ball. It’s a damn shame.

Banpresto for Dragon Ball lets keep releasing the same characters in the same outfits, poses and forms over and over.

They keep saturating the market with same-y SS2 figures. Last several months of 2018 alone saw several SS2 Gohan figures in fairly stock poses. That Grandista should have been Ultimate Gohan, if anything - even if the cape and head swaps are cool.

I don't follow One Piece but from what I've seen the character designs/clothes change regularly and it's all vert colorful and lively. DB characters barely ever get any drastic changes to their appearance and if they do, it doesn't last long. Look at Piccolo- hasn't changed one bit since his introduction .

I read One Piece and can confirm there's a ton of arc-exclusive outfits. Each island feels like its own world with unique theming and because of that the straw-hats semi-regularly change costume. Right now they're in the middle of a Japan-inspired country called Wano so everyone's clothes are themed accordingly.

It'd be nice if Dragon Ball would do arc-themed outfits when Super returns. The coats in the Brolli movie were a step in that direction, but they only briefly wore those so it's not quite the same. I don't count the drawn on Galactic Patrol symbol in the manga's current arc. I'm taking brand new outfits like Heroes kinda does. Xeno Gokû's outfit is one of my favorites. It's like a winter dougi and it flows well imo. I'd like a nice figure of him in base form, but the standard type I'm looking for of him doesn't exist yet.

But here is the thing even when Dragon Ball does there are no figures of it.

Vegeta and Goku got new winter coats. At best we got gashaphons

Bulma’s new outfit in the movie would have made an adorable figure of her. Heck they barely make adult Bulma figures

Vegeta and Goku fused in the movie and were battle damaged. All the merchandise of them though was in their normal outfits.

They can’t seem to make anything but Gohan SSJ2

Android 17 and 18 got new outfits. Where are the figures of it?

Hmm, i wonder what will be the difference (if there's any) between the two Vegitos Xenos. Shame that Gogeta Xeno is a variant since those seem to never make their way overseas (assuming we get these as well, of course), I have enough GT Gogetas figures so having the Xeno version to go with Vegito Xeno would be very nice. Getting the SSJ4s for sure.

Banpresto being absorbed by Bandai Spirits is a surprising news, I wonder how this will impact upcoming figure releases both in Japan and worldwide.

As for the discussion about reusing outfits, after Super unceremoniously discarded the RoF clothes and went back to the usual outfits, it became clear to me that everyone involved in DB have lost any interest on rattling the boat so to speak, instead just playing it safe to ensure sales. Ironically, SDBH is the only part of the franchise willing to try new designs for everyone around, but that might just be because the series hinges on variants and the like to sell.

No difference in Vegetto Xeno, just another way for Japanese folks to win it. We are getting everything here except the Xeno Gogeta.

Banpresto should have planned things for the rest of the year so immediate effects probably won't be felt until late 2019/early 2020 but in a sense we are probably f**ked. While we may see more prize figures Bandai S QC is so hit and miss and their BS will no doubt make it's way to the Prize Figures, overseas we can probably expect price increases. BNHD likely wanted more control of commercialisation of their properties, Bandai S now control:
Premium
Ichiban Kuji
Models for DB incl SHF's etc
Prize Figures

Wouldn't surprise me if other subs like Meaghouse get eventually absorbed into Bandai S too.

SSGSS w/ RF outfits were still being commercialised until half way through the actual ToP, decision was likely from the new series directors for the Trunks arc for whatever reason they felt. Goku wasn't too bad but SSGSS Vegeta in his bright blue outfit doesn't work at all.
