Does my boy Gohan have to beat Toppo in order to be "redeemed" and live up to the hype of this arc?

Post by precita » Mon Jan 08, 2018 3:06 pm

We're now at the very end of the tournament. Jiren is for Goku/Vegeta and Freeza is paired with Dyspo. That means Toppo is the last chance for Gohan to get a significant victory in this tournament.

Gohan's screentime especially compared to Goku/Vegeta in the TOP really was minor. For all the hype he got built up besides that, we saw him take out a few low-key opponents and the biggest victory he had was taking out the two Nameks. It seems like the writers have every major character get one big moment of glory before going down (except maybe Tien I guess), and 17 got the honor of the final blow on the U3 robot. If Gohan doesn't get any further win...then it seems like he never had a big shining moment in the tournament.

Toppo of course is a huge threat, he is the second strongest character outside Jiren. If Gohan manages to beat him, it would justify Gohan's build-up and lack of focus in the TOP at this point. Does "my boy Gohan" have to win to redeem himself? As said, if Gohan just loses to Toppo in the next few eps...it almost seems like his whole role in the tournament was nonessential. Where is Gohan's big victory?

What lack of focus? He had a few feature episodes in the tournament, which is more than anyone else aside from Goku.

103
106
108
118
119
120
121

He was active in all of those episodes and fighting throughout 111-117 in minor scenes. He has another focus episode coming up in 124. Maybe wait and see what they do with him there before getting up in arms over nothing. Especially when across the entire arc he's been treated like the co-lead.

No offense but your asking to much,Gohan had a lot of elimination,he has 5 with 1 being minor. So I want him Along with #17 to be taken Dyspo and Toppo because the latter have 0 elimination.

We're now at the very end of the tournament.
Not really, no. There are still 8 episodes at the very least, since the arc will end in March. That's more than two months.
That means Toppo is the last chance for Gohan to get a significant victory in this tournament.
He sealed the fates of both Universe 10 and 6. Isn't that enough?

Gohan has done a bunch of little things, but he needs a big fight against a really strong opponent, and hopefully that will be against Toppo.

All that matters is he puts on a good show. He may not beat him but if their fight ends with Toppo thanking god that he survived then that's a pretty good showing for him.

gohan needs to take his training serious again to be redeemed. honestly gohan should be where near toppo who's a god of destruction candidate while gohan reads books and teaches lectures all day

The thing is unlike other characters, Gohan has no hint of a new transformation coming. Toppo is about to tank Super Saiyan Blue Kamehahmehas like they're nothing, and as far as we can tell he's far from using his full power or going all out too.

And unlike other characters, Gohan has done nothing to reach the kind of level Toppo has. As long as Freeza has his hands full with Dyspo and Goku with Jiren then the only one who has a logical chance at defeating Toppo is Vegeta cause as far as we know he's getting TWO major power ups on top of his current huge level.

jplaya2023 put it best, one is a destroyer candidate while the other reads books. We'd be having a completely different conversation if Gohan gave Freeza a run for his $$ back in RF, took part in Champa's tournament and helped out against Black.

I don't think Gohan can beat Toppo without some serious assistance from U7's bigger guns, nor should he be able to considering Toppo is a seasoned super hero and GoD candidate while Gohan just recently got his groove back. Gohan's done a fine job acquitting himself in this arc. He's had several focus episodes and beaten a number of opponents which is the most success he's seen since he defeated Cell. Plus it looks like he has a tough battle with Dyspo coming up soon.

I second this. I don't think Gohan needs to win, but he does need to push himself and hopefully Toppo as well.

I think the most awesome thing for Gohan to do, would be to come up with the strategy that defeats Toppo or Jiren and have a major role in carrying out that strategy,. Whether he ultimately gets the elimination himself or doesn't, it will have cemented his role as team leader, otherwise that role will have been nothing more than empty Gohan hype.

I'm holding out hope that fighting against Top will bring out Gohan-kun's "ultimate form different from (his) father's" and give him the boost he would need to defeat Top, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Gohan-kun's had some really great moments in this tournament, and, if manages to put up a good fight against Top to the extent that he tires Top out or pushes Top to his maximum at least, I'll be very satisfied with how Gohan-kun performed. He's done a great job, especially considering he barely had any time to prepare for all of this. I never thought I'd see the day he'd achieve another impressive victory (Obuni, as well as Saonail and Pilina), much less have a hand in finishing off someone astronomically more powerful than Boo (Agnlasa/Anilasa).

Short Version: While I want to see Gohan-kun defeat Top, I'm already pleased with how he's performed up to this point.

Kick my ass? I'm world-class and Super Saiyan now."

guys listen. NO DRAGON BALL TOURNAMENT IN HISTORY ever since goku vs tien has ever been so cut and dry. the tournament won't simply end with the fighters beating each other as things are right now, and i can bet my life on that fact (just kidding about the betting my life thing). but even if things do continue as they are and the fighters simply beat each other, i think it would be perfectly fine for frieza and gohan/17 to be eliminated very soon and have 3 fighters on each team. then fighters start being eliminated until there is only 1 fighter left from each team.

honestly, i loved seeing frieza get the shit knocked out of him in 122, and he deserves to get cooked by the entire team U11. the other fighters have so much potential too, but if what you guys are proposing is that the fighters get eliminated by the time is up and one team is either left standing or has more fighters remaining, then fighters need to get eliminated quickly, even if it's unsatisfying.

what WILL happen though is there will be an epic battle. two of the fighters from team U7 will be eliminated and then the timer will run out. they will have no choice but to declare a draw and move on to 1v1 battles to settle things out dragon ball style.

To be fair, neither did Vegeta.

There was a hint pre-TOP. Gohan said the same thing Vegeta did. He said he'd do his own thing (paraphrasing) instead of the way Goku did it. Either in ep. 88 or ep. 90, can't exactly remember which.

Didn't the 23rd Budokai end straight up with Goku winning and that's about it? Sure we have Kami and Piccolo, but nobody died there, and nothing really changed about the earth from that saga.

I agree about U7 fighters being eliminated. I don't want or expect all 5 U7 fighters sticking in by the time this tournament ends. I see at least 2 getting eliminated at some point.

As for Gohan, he doesn't need to beat Toppo, but he needs to put in a respectable performance regardless. For the most part, he's been treated well for the saga.

Not a power level guy, but it would be pretty ridiculous for Gohan to be able to beat Toppo. Toppo is clearly superior in power and probably skill. Dude just finished taking a point blank Ultimate Gohan kamehameha like it was nothing last episode. If he manages to eliminate Toppo using smarts, or teaming up with someone, that's one thing. But in no way should he overpower Toppo.

Also the idea that Gohan needs a big fight is ignorant, he has had plenty of significant moments in this arc. He doesn't need anything.

If Gohan beats Toppo this would kill DBS, it would make no sense and it would be a fatal error from Toriyama/Toei/whoever. Gohan should be eliminated by Toppo. Toppo can alone can eliminate Gohan and #17.

The final should be Freeza, Vegeta and Goku vs Dyspo, Toppo and Jiren.

There was no hype about Gohan, only fans hyped Gohan without any reason, out of nowhere (being chosen as a "team leader" doesn't mean NOTHING. In the first episode of the Tournament, everyone mocked Gohan and disrespected his "leadership"). Gohan already shined in Cell's arc and Buu's arc, he doesn't need any spotlight.

If the series want to make Gohan shine again, they should do what they didn'1t in Z: build Gohan to be a badass, not make asspulls via dancing/farting/porn magazine reading Kai, or out of nowhere.

Gohan was built up as a return to form for this tournament. I don't know how some people can have amnesia of episodes we just recently watched.

I feel like Gohan has done pretty good so far. I don't think he needs a win against Toppo but I wouldn't mind it
