In the near future I want to make a guide, for people to be able to get the data (demux info and offsets) for those discs themselves and contribute to the project.
Aww, that's too bad.

I'd definitely be interested in a guide. Or maybe I'll just buy the blue boxes, heh. Who knows. For now I'll just rip my movies/GT.

IMO supporting the uncut original DB singles is probably going to he the lowest priority. Unlike the DBGT singles, which include NEPs that the Green Bricks dont, and the DBZ singles, which are closer to the original version of the broadcast dub than what every release since the Orange Bricks have done, there really isnt any advantage for Dragon Radar to take from with the possible (not sure if available on Blue Bricks) exception of the English dubs stereo mix.

I would be willing to provide into on the Season Blu-rays and possibly the DBZ singles if you still have the desire to include them.

No, why would it? It's fiction. The strength of the characters is not possible to reach in reality.

Season Blu-rays subtitles would be useless with the Dragon Boxes due to the whole High-Definition thing. As for the audio, the Dragon Boxes still use superior masters on the Japanese side. The English dub tracks however, though they can't be used with DVD, if someone could sync them to the Dragon Box video it would be pretty nice, if only for the use of fan edits (using the original Japanese music and the Remastered Funi dub and replacing the dialogue with Kai whenever possible.)

MPC-HC, and I imagine VLC too, will scale the subtitles properly to the video. I did some tests earlier and got it working, only thing I gotta fix is the aspect ratio.

I am in the process of syncing the Blu-ray English stereo track, among others, to the Dragon Box. I'm using it instead of the Orange Bricks because the audio is said to be better quality. I think the term is dynamic range. I'm pretty sure I can hear it in the recap music for the Faulconer-scored episodes.

The Blu-Ray audio is lossless, the Orange Bricks audio uses lossy Dolby AC3 compression. The same can be said for most blu-rays and DVDs however, and bitrate wise the Orange Bricks' audio is decent for DVD standards. In addition, the DVD format only supports lossless in the form of uncompressed LPCM, and I doubt that supports anything beyond stereo... So basically syncing the Season Blu-Ray audio to the Toei Dragon Boxes is an awesome indeavor, but can only be taken advantage of by MKVs (and MP4s I think) and blu ray burnings...

And like I said earlier, don't sync the Season Bluray Japanese audio to the Dragon Boxes. Despite the lossy compression, the Dragon Box's audio is still better than the Season Blurays Japanese audio....

If your doing this, perhaps you can make bit perfect rips of the audio of the Japanese and English Pioneer DBZ movie laserdiscs and sync that audio to the Dragon Boxes as well.

Well, the idea of the program is that you can roll your own files based on your own DVDs... I don't have a Laserdisc player or drive, let alone anything to rip & demux it -- I'm not sure such a utility actually exists.

There's this...

Videowise the contents of the DB laserdiscs don't matter with the exception of determining frame counts. The audio is the main thing to grab.

Unlike DVDs, which are 100% digital, Laserdisc audio is (usually) digital but video is 100% analog. Different Laserdisc players produce different results, although that program I linked to closes the quality gap significantly. This is a screenshot comparison between a "regular" capture from the Pioneer HLD-X0 (considered by some to be the best Laserdisc player ever made) and an ld-decode capture from the Pionneer CLD-V2800 (a very low end player)

I imagine that using X0 with ld-decode provides the best picture.

As for the audio side of things, you'll want a decent (if not high-end) sound card with a S/PDIF input that allows bit perfect captures of 16-bit/44.1 kHZ audio, and you'll want to save it either as uncompressed lcm or a lossless format like FLAC without doing any upconversion or downconversion.

Once you sync the laserdisc video and audio, you can then work with (in this case) syncing to the Dragon Box The Movies dvds.

edit: by "you" i don't necessarily mean thejeremymenace, but whoever wants to take on this kind of project.

Hey Jermey, have you thought of putting the English versions of mystical adventure, cha-la, we gotta power, and we are angels on the audio for the English with JP audio? Or adding the English Dan-Dan to Path to Power or GT #64?

On GT #64 it's not possible. The episode is using the full-size song, after all...

No plans for that currently. I can't really legally bundle the songs with the program... and there are some technical issues as well.

hey, I've got some simple questions about this...

- when you say it patches the japanese dragon box. does it actually patch the dvd and insert subtitles and audio? or are you running a program on the PC every time you want to watch them?
- is it necessary or beneficial to do this on the Z dragon box if we already have the funi english release?

thanks

I'm not thejeremymenace, but...how do I put this politely? You're kind of missing the point!

Dragon Radar doesn't directly affect the Dragon Boxes. What you are asking kind of goes against how the DVD format was created. You can't put changes onto a DVD once it's already pressed. Even in the case of consumer DVD-RW discs, you can't add stuff like subtitles after things have been encoded. You have to either override the files or add new material in addition to what was already put on the disc.

The Dragon Radar works is it makes exact copies of the content of the various discs, decouple the video audio and subtitles from the dvd format, synchronise the american stuff to the japanese stuff, then mixes it into MKV formatted episode without loss of quality or recompression.

...I tried to simplify the explanation, but I'm afraid I might not have explained things enough. Can someone else try to explain this using even less technical terms?

TL:DR

1. It doesn't literally patch the Japanese Dragon Boxes, nor does it use a program to add subtitles and audio when the dvd is playing.
2. It doesn't literally patch the Japanese Dragon Boxes. Also, what do you mean by funi english release? There's no single release. There's the various Bricks (Orange for DBZ, Blue for Original DB, Green for DBGT), the Funimation Dragon Boxes (only cover Z), the Double Features (only the DVD's are covered by Dragon Radar, the Blu-Rays don't work with it), the uncut singles (which don't work with Dragon Radar, which is unfortunate in the case of DBGT), the Level and Season Blu-Rays, neither of which Dragon Radar supports, etc.

ok got it. yeah thats all good. i understand, I'm not retarded. it was more the way he worded it that made me thought he patched the dvds.

yeah i meant the funi dboxes.

-It does not patch the DVD (that's way complicated!), it takes the video, audio & subs from both sets of DVDs, syncs them, and puts them into an MKV file.
-It might be worth it if you are interested in the -slightly- better video quality of the Japanese DBox. This program is more useful for DB, GT, and the movies.

Dragon Radar ~ English subs & audio for your Dragon Box [v1.0.3 "Daimao" released!]

Post by thejeremymenace » Thu Nov 17, 2016 12:25 am

Pardon the double post-- version 1.0.3 "Daimao" is now out! This version includes the following fixes:

-Fix issue where trying to process the Dragon Ball movies did nothing
-Fix Orange Brick audio delay issue by changing demux method
-Fix some errors in demux indices & correct some episode scene offsets

I still have a few issues that need fixing-- expect another version sometime soon.

Can you just add the GT NEP by yourself minus the DVD singles?
