I went to an autograph session for Chris Ayres at Anime Boston a few years back. My friend asked him: "Do you have any advice for someone looking to get into voice acting?"
Ayres responded (paraphrasing): "Don't focus on becoming a voice actor. Focus on becoming an actor." He talked about his varied acting experience in theater and other mediums. The idea is that you shouldn't get into voice acting because - as an anime fan - you want to hear your voice in an anime someday. If you have a genuine love of the craft and drive your acting career based on that, you'll build your fundamentals and have better results.
It applies to any art-form, really. Nozawa and Toriyama have both expressed concerns about the newer generation of their respective fields taking too much inspiration from the manga/anime they like.
I thought this was useful information, so I just wanted to pass it on!
Wise words from Chris Ayres.
