Bouken Special character profiles

Post by Herms » Wed May 27, 2009 4:44 am

----Notice:This old thread is part of my series of guides. To avoid necro-posting, please post any comments you have in the sticky thread for my guides, rather than here. Thanks!----

So I just finally managed to find the DragonBall Bouken [Adventure] Special, a Jump special issue released in December, 1987. This is the thing that has kid Goku holding the Nyoibo and riding Kinto-un on the cover. There's lots of neat stuff in this, but right now I want to write about the "Men's Personal History", which is a series of character ID cards written like they were actually filled out by the characters. It lists their name, gender, address, age, height, weight, hobby, occupation dislikes, speciality technique, family, and any random comment they have. A lot of this information was used in the bios for these characters in Daizenshuu 7. This ID cards are spread throughout the book's battle section, so it focuses on characters that Goku and co. fought (so nothing for Bulma, Chi Chi, or even Goku). It also only goes up to the mid Daimao arc, since that's where the manga was at the time.

Heights and weights are consistent with those listed in Daizenshuu 7 and the Super Exciting Guide. Most of the ages are too, though some characters are listed for what ages they would be currently during the story (that is, in Age 753), while others are listed for what there were in 749-750 (the years for the beginning of the series up to Uranai Baba), generally for characters who only appeared during then.

But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Yeah, I noticed my mistake right after I posted.
Oh! And shit, I'm just now noticing the various "family" info. And the list of super obscure trivia unearthed by Herms grows ever larger.
I believe all of the family information was reused in Daizenshuu 7, with the exception of the names of Chapa's wife and kids (it says that he is married and has 3 kids though). Tsuru-sennin's age was also left out of Daizenshuu 7.

For Ran-Fan’s husband, Trunks would presumably come from that kind of men’s underwear, just like with Bulma’s son. This fits with Ran-Fan’s underwear theme quite well.

Namu’s two younger brothers, Ami and Dabu, go with Namu’s name pun: the Buddhist chant namuamidabutsu, a declaration of faith in the Buddha that Namu says whenever he performs his Tenku Peke-ji Ken attack. In the series, Namu refers to his otouto, younger brother, but since Japanese has no real plural, it wasn’t clear from the series whether he had one or more brothers, and so most translations just assume he had one.

Oh, and I noticed Jacky Chun has no listed family, despite Uranai Baba having already appeared at this point. This might be because he’s technically undercover.

The names of Murasaki’s four twin brothers all come from the Japanese words for colors, in keeping with his name (all the other RR members are named for the English words for colors). Kon is navy blue, Cha is brown, Aka is red, and Ao is blue, sometimes green.

Akkuman’s older sister, Majon, is a named after majo, Japanese for witch (literally demonic/magical woman). Ackman’s sister (or maybe his mother, I can’t remember) has a similar name.

I’d assume the names for Chapa’s family members come from Indian foods, but I don't know what they are. I believe we do see his family in the anime filler.
Ha. And get a load of Blue and Tao Pai Pai's "Opinions, Requests". Bear in mind that this was published mid Daimao arc. More evidence that Toriyama did indeed plan at least SOME shit in advance.

That reminds me how later in the book, there's a Q&A session with Toriyama (that's one of the things I'm going to cover later). Someone asks him who created the dragonballs, and he says it must have been God. This is still a little while before Kami appeared in the story (in the back of the book, there's an ad for the next issue of Jump, with the chapter of DB where the Super God Water is introduced, so that's where the story was up to).

I thought he lives with Bulma!!

He did before the 21st Tenkaichi Budoukai, but he would have lived with Kame-sennin during the three years between the 21st and 22nd Tenkaichi Budoukai, when Kame-sennin trained him.

Toninjinka
Address: Well, I used to be on the moon, but that was destroyed, so now I’m floating through space…
Opinions, Requests: Some…someday I’ll return to Earth!

Wait, he is not dead?!

Apparently not. In the Toriyama Q&A, someone asks him what happened to Toninjinka when the moon was destroyed, and Toriyama answers that he's now floating through space.
Giran
Occupation: bodyguard

A bodyguard? For whom?!

I guess presumably just for hire.
And where's The Invisible man?!

They left him out, for some reason. Maybe his ID card is actually there, but it's invisible.
King Chapa
Specialty Technique: Hiryu-Ken (Flying Dragon Fist)

I'de love to see this attack!!

Yeah, it's odd that it'd list an attack we never see. Was this used in the anime, maybe?

This looks like high age in DB world is nothing special if somebody don't kill you......

Looks like martial artists that are surpassed the human limits in movement and fighting are able to live hundreds of years......

Maybe it's similar to the Saiyans being able to stay so young for so long...but with characters like Kame-Sen'nin and Tao Pai Pai, since they've been fighting for so long and, as you've said, surpassed the human limits in movement and fighting, they are able to live for hundreds of years and still not deterioate. That is, their bodies don't weaken like regular humans...or at least, don't weaken as much.

How do you know that all of the characters' ages aren't as of Age 753? I mean, if we're to assume that the characters just filled out those ID cards in the "present"...

I guess just going by when Daizenshuu 7 says they were born. And some characters aren't listed as being in "the world of death" when they should be dead at that point in the story (Giran and Namu, for instance).

To break it down, there are basically five groups: First, characters given ages fully consistent with Daizenshuu 7. Second, characters given ages that are consistent with Daizenshuu 7 if you assume that they refer to their first/main apperance in the story (in Age 749-750), but which would make them 3-4 years younger than Daizenshuu 7's birth years indicate if you assume that they refer to the present (Age 753). Third, characters whose ages are consistent with Daizenshuu 7 if you assume that they stopped counting their age when they died; otherwise there's a 3-4 discrepency again. Fourth, characters whose ages are completely inconsistent with Daizenshuu 7, no matter how you slice it. And then finally there are the characters not given ages here (but who may or maynot have given ages in later guidebooks).

Fully consistent
Oolong: 13
Yamcha: 20
Pilaf: 38
Jacky Chun: 323
Karin: about 800
Mummy-kun: I guess about 800
King Chapa: 43
Tenshinhan: 20
Man-Wolf: 34
Cymbal: 0
Tambourine: 0

Inconsistent if year is 753
Toninjinka: 51 (consistent if year is 749)
Giran: 33 (consistent if year is 750)
Ran-Fan: 24 (consistent if 750)
Namu: 29 (consisten if 750)
Tao Pai Pai: 291 (consistent if 750)

Consistent if you assume it refers to their age at death
Murasaki: 35
General Blue: 28

Totally inconsistent
Dracula Man: 34 (vs. 574 in Daizenshuu 7)
Son Gohan: If I were still alive, I guess I’d be 102 (vs. 92 if alive, according to Daiz 7)

Characters not given ages
Bacterian: I forgot
Buyon: gugihiyaho
Guardian Robot: gi…
Akkuman: I don’t remember
Chaozu: I don’t know.
Age: Who cares?
Piccolo: [left blank]

Wow, you actually found a copy of this! I’ve been trying to track a copy of this book down for some time now, and have found a handful of online sights that have it listed, but have been trying to go about the ordering process for some time now. If you don’t mind, I have a few questions about the book…

Are the two chapters of Dragon Boy and The Adventures of Tongpoo the only complete manga chapters included in the book? And I heard there are a lot of playable games in this book, so what are they like? Are they just basically board games and mazes? And is there a Toriyama interview in here? And if so, is it an original one, or the same as one of the interviews from the Shenron Times? This question is aimed directly at you: considering its rarity and age, how would you compare this book to say Daizenshuu 7 or the SEG guides or DragonBall Landmark in terms of information, layout, awesomeness, originality, etc. I'm sure you will cover all of these things and the rest of the book eventually in some capacity, so you don't really have to give me in depth answers or anything...

By the way, did you find this at Mandrake as well? And how much did you pay for it? I know retailed for only 280 yen, but I’ve seen it listed for over 10,000 yen these days. :?

Thanks for picking this up!!

Yeah, it's only those.
And I heard there are a lot of playable games in this book, so what are they like? Are they just basically board games and mazes?
First there's rules for five rather elaborate games, where you have to provide your own dice and board. These look rather interesting: one's an RPG where you can experience and level up. Then there's a big maze spread over several pages where you have to answer trivia questions correctly to advance through it. That is, as you go through the maze, you'll come to an intersection where you can go several different ways. There'll be a multipke-choice trivia question there, and each path is marked with the letter for one of the answers. So you can only advance if you know the correct answer, or just through trial and error.
And is there a Toriyama interview in here? And if so, is it an original one, or the same as one of the interviews from the Shenron Times?
There's a three-page Q&A. There's a lot of questions on each page (about 24 per page), but in turn the answers Toriyama gives are pretty sort, about a sentence or so. There's some interesting information in there, though.

The biggest draw-back to the book is that it only covers up to the mid-Daimao arc (since that's all there was at the time), though this does mean that it devotes attention to the early part of the story, which I think gets the short thrift in many of the guides (all the new information Toriyama gave in the SEG seemed to focus mainly on the Z portion of the story, for instance). There lots of good information (a list of battles, a dictionary on people, places, and things from DB, the Toriyama Q&A), but again it all only covers things up to mid-Daimao arc. There's a great series of short comics by Toriyama (drawn very loosly, possibly freehand) showing the characters explaining how to perform their special attacks. There's also the story of how Oolong got expelled from the Southern Transformation Kindergarten (with pictures by somebody besides Toriyama), and a page on Pilaf and co. trying to figure out why Goku is so darn strong (Pilaf suggests that he's an alien!). There's also the two pages that show Bulma dressed up in various outfits that the other characters suggested she wear (a wedding dress, the Kame uniform, etc).

All in all, I think for the most part this is definitaly worth picking up even if you have the other guides, because it contains lots of stuff that isn't in them.

Yeah, I found it at Mandarake, in the same store that has all the old Jump issues. It cost 420 yen there (have I mentioned I love Mandarake?).

I mentioned in my second post that they all come from Japanese words for colors: Kon is navy blue, Cha is brown, Aka is red, and Ao is blue, sometimes green.

Will you be translating the Q&A soon? I'd like to read it! Also, could you describe the story of Oolong's expulsion? (And who drew it?)

I would like to see this too, we all would, really :D

BTW, was this done by Toriyama or only by Jump? You said it was some of the same things as the Daizenshuu, so I assume it was by Toriyama

420 yen?!

420 yen?! That guy on Ebay is so not getting 80$ for this book... I'm not that desperate yet.

Boy, do we all envy you...

Anyway, I have two last questions (well, I'll probably come up with more eventually, but hopefully I'll just be able to be patient and wait to have them answer themselves): what is the calendar that is scattered throughout the first section of the book? Is it just the Weekly Jump release dates up to that point? And is there and kind of fold-out or even one-page poster in this book? It almost seems customary for Shueisha's DB guides to include one.

Thanks again!!

It's a special issue of Jump.

It comes with the Kame-sennin Uffun Calendar, which is the one that features Kame-sennin taking pictures of Bulma and Lunch in various states of undress, and getting shot for his efforts. It seems that there was a fold-out poster that came with this, but that it was already cut out of my copy (which probably explains why it was so cheap).

Does 'Guardian Robot' refer to the robot seen in the Pirate Cave?
