Wasn't there a line where dub Buu pronounced Saiyan as Saiya-jin in one of his random babblings?
---------------------------------------

Viz seems to do this sometimes as you pointed out with manga where the localized version changes names.

For instance in the Yu-Gi-Oh manga they use the weird altered card names (I assume so that they'll correspond to the cards from Konami's TCG). Then in the back of every volume there's a guide showing the original Japanese name for each card and it's translation. Now what's really weird is that while most of the cards have English names in the Japanese version several of them are given Japanese names in the English version. For example Time Bomb (original) = Jigen Bakudan (English edit) which just means "time bomb" in Japanese.

I remember a line where one of the characters is like "Toon Dragon Egger! ...er.. um.. I mean Manga Ryuuran!"

So yeah, I imagine translators and editors for a manga volume probably get fed up with substituting an edited name for the real one they have to read every page.

That line was actually in the original.

They're legitimate questions, especially for a younger guy like him who was really (comparatively speaking) only recently exposed to the show (through FUNimation's version), and while he knows the Japanese version is out there... hey, he knows what he likes, and that's totally cool. I'm just wondering what the reasoning is for that (if there is any), since I'm pretty sure my assessment of FUNimation was fairly accurate for the company they were at the time.
You're right. I guess I read that wrong, as if you were telling him what you thought about him. :P

And that's totally true. It just frustrates me that FUNimation (yeah yeah, the Dragon Boxes are coming out... too little too late) gives such shitty treatment to Dragon Ball. The kind of shoddiness not seen in any other anime (as far as I'm aware of). Their handling of GT was unforgivable. They totally broke all the unwritten rules and conduct for how you handle foreign material (for one, not making it your own and changing storylines and episode format), and to me their sudden "appeal to the median" is yet another marketing scheme. They've already raped dry all the money that can be made by all the younger, gullible audience, so what other property would make the most money? The diehard fans. They'll spend loads of money for this, even moreso than the corporate sheep. So, for this... I am not impressed, FUNimation. Maybe if you had started off (or at least at an earlier time, like, years ago) with this fan-appealing material, I would respect your latest decisions, but honestly, it's the last ditch effort to make some more cash off the Dragon Ball franchise, so humph to you, FUNimation.

I'm not sure this suggests they were "poking fun" at the original.

Why is it saying I wrote that? I said no such thing.

And for the record, I never said I liked it as a legit song. I said I liked it because it was horrifically funny. So bad it's good, you could say.

Of course, I don't like Dan Dan either, but that's beside the point. (All of GT's themes blew chowder, in my book. Only Grand Tour was bad enough to be hilarious, though.)

I can hear the corporate fakeness and marketing dishonesty bleeding through when I hear the "Step into the Grand Tour" bullshit. Plus it's like... a droning combination of rap/metal. Ick.

Dan Dan is endearing and innocent as hell. It's poppy, which is fantastic, and what should be in Dragon Ball. Fuck FUNimation's metal/rock/rap impositions.
I get that Dan Dan is happy, upbeat, and "Dragon Ball" in a nutshell, but that's not the reason I'm in an eternal "holding my face up with my hand" battle when I hear it. It's just not that great a song, IMO. Mystical Adventure, CHA-LA HEAD CHA-LA, WE GOTTA POWER, and Dragon Soul all carry the same theme and tone as Dan Dan, except they do their job and remind me of that when I hear them. Dan Dan is essentially background noise until the episode starts.

If Grand Tour was a good rap I wouldn't mind it but it sounds like a 60 year old Will Smith sung it.

If they HAD to do a rap I would hope it would be in a Beastie Boysesque fashion.

It could be worse. We could be hearing the Dragon Ball openings in Opera.

OH MY GOD YES. If it was half as good as that I'd give Funi a blowjob.

Guys, its just a theme song. It has as much musical status as the Kim Possible Theme song or any other silly cartoon.

You all are highly underestimating the complex symphony known as the Kim Possible theme song.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND going back to topic...

I heard that Viz made fun of FUNimation's dub in the scene where Vegeta transformes into the Giant Monkey:

Goku: "My Grandpa... You killed my Grandpa...!!!"

Vegeta: "Ha! Ha! Now that is a good one!"

Was it somthing related to the Ocean dub? and what was the original dialuge here?

And speaking of Yu-Gi-Oh, Viz used Maximillion J. Pegasus - a dub name. Strangley, Esper Roba says his original name "Pegasus J. Crawford" and never again we read it.

Yeah, Viz does use the "You killed my Grandpa" line. The original line is just Goku saying "A great ape monster...!". Doesn't seem like that big of a leap that he was thinking that though.

True enough, but a theme song can say a lot about the show you're about to watch and how good the song is helps people remember the show in the long run.

Just ask anyone who watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a child in the 80s and 90s. While you're at it, ask kids who watched Power Rangers, X-Men, Spider-Man, or Batman in the 90s.
