DBZ Remastered Movies in 4:3 and better contrast !

Post by Treklin » Fri Mar 12, 2010 6:26 pm

Hi guys,

I have noticed on the product description sites for the remastered DBZ movies over amazon.com, that they are showing
us completely different screenshots and in much better contrast and this in 1:1,20 aspect ratio. We realize that the
DBZ Remastered Movies has a aspect ratio of 1:1,78 and presented us in 16:9 format.

Now, why Funimation has brought us a bad remastered release if they had release the remastered movies in 4:3 and better
quality/contrast ???

2 comparison shots:

Blu-ray screenshot (downsized) / AR: 1:1,78 / 16:9 format

Image

Amazon.com screenshot / AR: 1:1,20 / ??? format

Image

and here an other:

Screenshot from the DVD (downsized) / AR: 1:1,78 / 16:9 format

Image

amazon.com screenshot / AR: 1:1,20 / ??? format

Image

you can see that the screenshots from amazon has more contrast (which you can see if u compare the darker/brighter
parts) but a little more grain/dirt/scrathes ...

The fact is that the master for the DBZ movies are in 1:1,20 that means you can see much more, because normally we
all saw the movies in 4:3 format thats equal to the 1:1,33 aspect ratio.

Btw. which format is equal to 1:1,20 ? 5:4 is 1:1,25 ... Is someone expert in this case ?

But nevertheless its such a big shame these how VegettoEX says "faux" remastered 16:9 dbz movies, they could released it in 4:3 and better contrast!

Here are the links for more incredible good screenshots that you`ve never seen...

Dragon Ball Z Double Feature - The History of Trunks / Bardock the Father of Goku (Steelbook) - no screenshots available
Dragon Ball Z Double Feature: Dead Zone / World's Strongest (Steelbook)
Dragon Ball Z Double Feature: Tree of Might / Lord Slug (Steelbook)
Dragon Ball Z: Coolers Revenge / The Return of Cooler (Double Feature) (Steelbook)
DragonBall Z: Super Android 13/Bojack Unbound (Double Feature) (Steelbook)
Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn / Wrath of the Dragon (Double Feature)

I hope that Funi brings us the "true" remastered DBZ Movies and series in 4:3 and better image quality!!!

Those appear to be scans of someones movie cels. Someone uploaded them as customer photos. Amazon seems to already be removing them, as they aren't relevant to the product.

The movies aren't really meant to be 4:3 anyway. They appear to have been produced that way, but they were meant for theatrical release, and thus meant to be shown in 16:9. That's what I gather anyway.

Those are some quite badass cel scans, though. Think I have a new avatar to try out...

Wow, the image quality on those pictures is fucking incredible.

How would someone obtain all of those various cels, with the correct backdrops, to scan in as a complete image? That doesn't make much sense to me-- sounds impossible.

Maybe these actually come directly from FUNimation themselves.

I found some really good screenshots on Amazon too, they're amazing in my opinion. Especially that second one...

They aren't cel scans. Those images were also on the back of the steel book cases.

That doesn't mean that they aren't cels that FUNimation has.

LilKoku, where did you find those screencaps on Amazon? I can't find them anywhere.

They're in what is called "Amazon's DragonBall store", there is a seperate one for each series. The screenshots are named as scenes. Here are the links, just scroll somewhere down to the bottom to find the screen caps.

DragonBall
DragonBall Z
DragonBall GT (I don't think there are any screen caps for this one).

I think these images are indeed cels that Funi has in possession. Which would add more weight to everything Kei17 has been saying about how the Dragon Box colors may be accurate to the master that was used, but not to how they originally looked.

The 16:9 shots are from FUNi's Blu-ray release, not the Dragon Box.

I know that. But the Dragon Box colors for those movies look very different from the images on Amazon. Just go to Myfavoritegames, where they have Dragon Box screencaps for every DBZ movie.

I do consider these releases to be the only remastered sets FUNimation has really remastered.
I've seen them in motion and they look gorgeous! That is why I'd rather buy them than Dragon Box The Movies (if FUNi releases them too).

One thing that has me confused is how come those particular scans of the cels look so good, yet the cel scans that FUNi uses in their booklets as well as what Toei uses in the Daizenshuu look closer to a HQ Dragon Box screencap (for quality, not colors)? Hell, how come the Dragon Box doesn't look as good? Is it because of the quality of the cameras at the time? Or if that's simply how it will look like when filmed and printed to a certain format (and then encoded to DVDs). If the former is the case, then would DBZ probably look like that if it were done today?
