Dragon Ball Production Cels

Post by Ajay » Mon Jun 24, 2013 8:28 am

I've been shopping around for production cels from the show. Ended up picking this up recently:

I've always loved the SSJ4 design and of course, Vegeta is a fantastic character so this was the best of both worlds.

There's already a 'your recent purchases thread' but I'd love to start a thread to showcase the cels you guys may have bought.

SO! POST ANY PRODUCTION CELS YOU'VE BOUGHT!

I blame you for this, Ajay. This is entirely your fault and in no way am I responsible for how I spend my money. Damn you. Damn you straight to hell.

Ah, that looks awesome. I've been some of these cels priced insanely. There was an amazing 4 layered SSJ Goku for about $800 on one site. I wish'd for a moment that I had all the money in the world.

No Cell cels? :P

I really, really want to get a cel sometime. Hopefully I'll get enough money sometime soon.

Goku looks like he has violent diarrhea.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Is that cell from Dragon Ball Movie 3 Makafushigi Daibouken/Mystical Adventure?

Edit just checked and it's not from Dragon Ball Movie though it is from around that era of the show.
If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out. ;).

Yeah, I'm not really sure what it's from to be honest. But it was fairly cheap, and so my fanboy brain took control of the mouse.

Just a follow up as mine has actually arrived now. Took a quick snap on my phone so sorry about the quality.
Looks really fantastic. I want to get it framed but I'm not sure what's the best way to present it. I was initially thinking about having the drawing on the left and the cel on the right and, after having worked out which episode it's from, get an engraved part underneath saying something like 'Original Cel from Dragon Ball GT #<?>'.
Any other ideas?

They're all over Japanese auction sites too. They match up perfectly to scenes from the show right down to the SFX layers which would be impossible to fake perfectly.

Cels, the perfect reference to colour correct the Dragonboxes.

Also, I have a question: Why do the cel's appear to have red outlines whereas in the finished product (the anime) the lines are black? Does it have to do with fading? Or does it have to do with onion skinning?

My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

I think that's just a result of the lines having slightly faded over the years, and the sketch that backs it not being in black in the first place. If you take a fairly old cel on it's own, you'll notice that the lines are clearly black, but with a ton of faded spots and gaps.
