What did you guys make of this scene?

Was it so ridiculous that it was awesome? Or did you just find it flat-out stupid? Do you think it cheapened the first half of the movie? If you didn't like it, how would you have written a conclusion to the movie?

Personally, I think I fall on the side of "it's so ridiculous that it's awesome." To me, it's kind of an iconic moment in the franchise and I think this kind of "money shot" was necessary for the film- every DB movie needs that one memorable moment that fans can remember it by, as well as use it in all the marketing.

Yeah, I just brought this up because I just read that TFS were almost half-way through working on their version of the film. :P

It's a cool scene, but the rest of the movie is meh in my opinion. Metal Coola's design is neat, but he was really just a rehash of Cyber Freeza at best.

The first screenshot is a possible justification of TOEI's goofy movie title. To be fair a few other Z movies had titles that were even goofier

For once, I kinda like Funi's title better then the Japanese title. The Japanese title is such a mouth full to say in my opinion.

I've seen many different, contradictory translations of this movie's title, and I don't really get if it refers to "10,000,000,000 Warriors who are powerful" or to "Warriors with a power (level, I suppose) of 10,000,000,000".
Maybe kei17 could make this clear? Please?

^ The first one makes more sense and was chosen by the Kanzenshuu staff, so you can trust that.

Power levels are not meaningful anymore at this point of the story, and one Metal-Cooler can be defeated by Goku and Vegeta so there's nothing great about their power level.
Whereas the astonishing number of Metal Cooler that show up - after they had so much trouble with just one - is the  moment of the whole film, the only moment that makes it special actually.

Unlike titles of episodes, the title for this movie still kept the surprise, since you are led to think the 10,000,000,000 warriors are all the robots you see at the beginning, facing Piccolo and the rest.
When you actually see other Metal Coolers appearing, you understand and go "Oh God... There are actually 10,000,000,000 like the one they just barely defeated, all here at the same time and all rushing to them at the same time!" So, about any chance of victory? Statistically impossible! So much that you don't even see the fight itself and skip to "obviously, they lost and were captured".

I thought it was great, still do. How they ended it though was pretty terrible/a total asspull. As if they go up to the end then someone burst in the room saying 'crap guys, CRAP, we forgot that goku and co have to win at the end, no time left, quickly scribble an ending onto this napkin and we'll have the animators jump straight on it'

((and I agree that japanese names of movies are rather inelegant, surely they have to 'work' better in japanese and it's just one of those lost in translation things))

It wasn't stupid. Just had shitty 3rd Act (Goku & Vegeta getting their Powers sucked, yet miraculously won).

I'd agree though. This film had some visually impressive "money-shots". TOEI really had some cool ideas on science-fiction (which is good considering it came in 90's) & I agree Cooler seems like rehash of Cyber Frieza. Coul've been better, great nonetheless.

It seems like the Dragon Ball (not Z) titles for movies and episodes were less long-winded. When Z arrived, that changed.

This particular movie did have nice moments, and the Big Gete Star concept seemed kind of cool. Coola's return was much better than any of Broly's.

Oh yes indeed, I wholeheartedly agree about the great environments and scenery in the movie. You'd never think Planet Namek would make for such a great setting. Though I suppose Coola and the Big Gete Star are responsible for mixing things up.

As for the movie's ending... I dunno, I rather like it. The idea of 'Goku and Vegeta overload Coola with their limitless Super Saiyan power' is great from a story-telling perspective, if you can prevent yourself from thinking about it from too much of a power levels angle.

I think the animation is great though. I do think that they would have gone with another original plot then just rehash Cyber Freeza, but I do remember that Movie 5 was very popular. It's no surprise that Toei wanted to milk on Coola since him and Broli are the most popular movie characters in Japan.

That one little robot who was dragging all the other Z fighters (including the mighty Yajirobe) somewhere was probably the most powerful thing in the universe! :( But as we've discussed smaller means stronger after all. :D

I find the movie iconic for that one scene alone. It's amazing.

The movie is a fun way to kill an hour; it's flawed but fun.

Metal Cooler and Big Gete Star are really interesting antagonists, and it would've been cool to see that idea explored further.

Movie 6 is also notable for simultaneously having some of the best and absolute worst animation in DBZ history (sometimes even within the same scene.)
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Back in 96' I owned random pieces of Dragonball merchandise of which featured illustrations and/or screen captures of this particular scene. By this time, I had only seen the first 13 edited episodes of Dragonball, and the first two seasons of the Ocean Dub. You can imagine the wonder and excitement I had towards the possibility of seeing this scene play out one day. I finally grabbed the DVD when it was first released from FUNi.

Alas, this was a total cock-tease. The films had a formula and I had already expected the scene to be no more than what it was. Regardless, I was holding out for a surprise.
