Dragon Ball bootleg Manga thread

Post by eledoremassis02 » Wed Jul 02, 2014 3:44 pm

Since I started one for the DVD, I figure why not start one for the Manga?

"Dragon Ball II" is the original Dragon Ball manga translated into Chinese. From what I understand these were sold in Taiwan (unsure of the circulation date) for 6元 (0.97 USD in today's Dollars)
Each volume would vary in thickness, some containing as little as two chapters, and share around the same size as a standard Manga. But each volume has distinct cover art that separated it from it's Japanese counter part.

Chapters have title pages and sound effects are left unchanged

The books are well binned and the paper quality is a little thinner than Tankōbon but thicker than the Viz 3-in-1's. Pages are also printed well and carry over most of the detail from the original source though it seems like the pages were faxed/copied during production (not much of a surprise)
However, color pages do not translate well

When a volume run short, some other comics are thrown in to fill up the book

The last volume comes with select translated pages of DRAGON BALL 冒険 SPECIAL

Overall, the quality is not bad for what it is, and in some ways beats the 3-in-1's. The covers make them fun to collect as well!

The Manga "Dragon Ball" appeards to be from another release as it is thicker, and overlaps with other volumes of "Dragon ball II" Both seem to be from the same source:

When I receive my package (next few days) I will update this thread with another release called "Son of the Dragon" (though I am not sure if their is a relation to "Dragon Ball II")

I always like seeing the different coverart for bootlegs and other versions of the manga. I liked the seeing the diffrent covers on the korean version, and the german version took different title pages from the manga and colorized them, then used them as covers.

Wow, the cover art with Goku, Raditz and Piccolo looks pretty neat! And I like the psychedelic coloring on the cover art with Goku, Nappa and Vegeta.

Rented the Viz Manga (the one that comes in the box set) from the library and compared the two:

*Updated the first post regarding Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball II*

Next up is "Son of the Dragon"
"Son of the Dragon" is the original Dragon Ball (and Z) manga translated into Chinese. From what I understand these were sold in Taiwan (unsure of the circulation date) for 37元 ($5.97 USD in today's Dollars)
These books seem to have a standard thickness and higher quality glossy covers, unlike Dragon Ball 2 and share around about the size of Viz's Dragon Ball (red covers). But each volume has distinct cover art that separated it from it's Japanese counter part.

These volumes cover Piccolo destroying the ring in Dragon Ball to around Vegeta Killing Kiwi

Unlike the Dragon Ball II volumes, pages are often printed with different color ink (Pink/red, Blue and Black).

Like Dragon Ball II these also have supplemental manga such as Dr. Slump.

Looks like the sound effects in Son of the Dragon are a bit lame.

For me, having manga printed in blue, red and stuff has its own kind of charm. I'm weird, I know.

I wouldn't 100% mind it either haha, it's a neat little novelty.

Never knew there was bootleg Dragon Ball manga. Seeing as there are bootleg Dragon Ball DVDs though I guess I should've thought of it.

The color pages are kinda fun. I enjoy the covers a lot though. I think some of the sources are from the shonen Jump manga (atleast for Dragon Ball II).

Here is a photo of them along side some Viz manga

Also, I found the source to the extras. It's from DRAGON BALL 冒険 SPECIAL

This one was a nice cover! It Freeza traced from another source? I know I have seen that Goku picture somewhere before, but never the Freeza one.

These bootleg editions are really interesting!
Do you know if both Dragon Ball II and Son of the Dragon got to cover the whole manga?

It's really hard to tell, but would say the both did but I have a feeling Son of the Dragon probably did over Dragon Ball II but thats because I cannot seem to find Dragon Ball II past the Saiyan saga

I can't find a source..It looks like it could be fanart or made by who ever did the covers, there are a few panels that have a similar pose that may have lead some inspiration?
