Because piccolo is a namekian and no one cares about them. Vegeta is a saiyan so of course he would naturally be more popular. Also piccolo is a weak nobody in dbs whereas vegeta is literally a God destroyer even if he still is second fiddle.

Heh. Well, I would argue it is not a fad. I would say the USA was unfortunately thrown into a bastardised version of the show with significant pieces missing, and the entire English-speaking fandom is worse off for it because of how much everything ends up revolving around the USA in online discussion, but there is a legitimate, deep love for the franchise that's resulted from the west's strong exposure to Dragon Ball across the '90s and '00s, regardless of how the fans were introduced to it.
Cure Dragon 255 wrote:And you said America, Americans etc. Please be more specific and say USA instead.
Sorry. I assumed it was obvious what I meant. Goddamn ambiguous phrasing...

There's not really a good non-ambiguous word for people from the USA, unfortunately, as the Arrogant Worms at one point mentioned in a rather brilliant song I believe they wrote for Canada Day one year... USAires? Unitedstatsians?

Well, in any case, I'll try to be more careful in future. :)

I see. Thank you, and of course I accept your apology. It was just a misundertanding, after all; we're all good, I think. :)

Online Dragon Ball discourse centring on the USA is unfortunately a reality of being in the English fandom. It's one I will resist with all my might -- a wise man once said, "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" -- but it is what it is. Hopefully Wow TV will get Ocean Kai on air in April and get a resurgence of Canadian fans going. And then the "America" confusion will be given all new life as we reach the point of having upwards of seven different American dubs!
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Character development reasons.
"It was deemed to be too awesome." - Scott McNeil on Dragon Ball Kai not being aired yet in Canada.

This, and he's a Saiyan, not Big Green.

Because he's a better written character, has more range of personality & development, gets more badass scenes and moments, is more conventionally attractive (after the Namek arc) and is much more of a foil to Goku.

None of this is to say Piccolo is a bad character however.

Oh, and the idea that Vegeta is only super popular in the West is complete nonsense. Vegeta is consistently at least top 3 in every Japanese DB fan poll since the mid-90s (and always higher than Piccolo), and tends to rank pretty high in many general anime/manga polls in the Japan as well.

Vegeta is a Saiyan whereas Piccolo's a Namekian and generally, Saiyans are seen as the badass characters everyone loves to play and even dream to be. I'm not a fan of Vegeta's character but between these two, I'd rather be on the Saiyan side.

I’m still not seeing where people are getting Vegeta is a better written character. He’s a pretty shallow written character tbh

It’s just Piccolo got all his development in the Saiyan saga and a teeny bit in the Garlic Jr/Android saga

Compared to just about anyone else in franchise, how is he shallow? The only other characters that approach Vegeta's level of depth are Gohan, Future Trunks and Zamasu. Piccolo comparatively is just not on their level, writing wise.

Depth is about how many layers and personality traits a character has, and character development is the process of a character becoming more 3D, not "changing" from one personality to another.

Besides his Stoicism and his soft spot for Gohan, Piccolo comparatively doesn't have much going for him as a character (which may be why Toriyama/Toei phased him out after the Cell Games).

None of this is saying Piccolo is a bad character however.
