Romanizations in the manga/Super

Post by xmysticgohanx » Mon Aug 10, 2015 5:17 pm

The only ones I know of are Bulma and Kulilin
I can vaguely remember Goku also but I'm not sure. Are there more?
Canon is Jaco, Dragon Ball except for EoZ, Dragon Ball Super anime and manga (both are separate canons)

iirc the austronaut stuff was from filler. Something's telling me Goku is on something else but I might just be tripping. Do you remember the chapter and page is your image from?

I'm guessing "Gokou" or "Gokuh' is filtering to Goku?

Wouldn't "Gokuu" be a more direct romanization? Also is it Goku-uh or just a longer U?

I don't remember the exact numbers but it's at the start of the 23rd tournament when the team meets up and grown up Goku is seen for the first time.

It's an elongated "u" sounds, くう, romanized as kū under the Hepburn system, but "kuu" and "kuh" are both valid alternatives.

This front cover from a tankobon romanized Goku's name:
It also has one of my favorite mis-romanizations of the manga - Red Ribon.
Champion of 2nd Kanzenshuu Short Story Tenka'ichi Budokai

There should be a witty quote or something down here. I'm just not imaginative enough to come up with anything.

Red Ribon technically isn't a romanization at all, it's a straight up misspelling.

Didn't they romanized Vegeta to Bejita?

Include some dubs had used the "bejita pronounce".

I remember Vezeta and Bezita from somewhere too. And Mazin Boo.

I have a few trading cards from Japan that say "Klillyn" and "Ginew".

'Yamcha' is used at one point in the comic.

So far we have: Son Gokuh, Bulma, Yamcha, Kulilin, and Yajirove.
I'm sure there must be more. I don't own the entire series yet, so I can't check for 'Mazin Boo'. That doesn't sound likely, tho.

Is Muten and Master different romanizations or that's just something else.

"Muten" is the first half of 武天老師 (Mutenroushi), and the kanji for that half mean "martial arts/warrior" and "heaven/sky/divine." The "roushi" half is the part that means "old master."

It's all one title, but how one chooses to romanize it or translate it is obviously subjective. Although "Master Roshi" is pretty redundant, among other things.

There's a teeny-tiny banner held by a fan at the Tenka'ichi Budōkai where Videl's name is spelled "BEEDEL". This is, to my knowledge, the only time her name is romanized in the manga proper.
