Scenes that were better in FUNI dub

Post by Noah » Wed Oct 07, 2015 2:02 pm

I'm a great fan of the original japanese dub, I get used to the voices it's been like 9 years ago and I know that old FUNI dub had a lot of problems, errors, and all the good original soundtrack had been replaced...

But there are some scenes that I thought were better presented than in the original dub, most because of the voice and acting and track that fit well with the scene:

lol. It'd be a lot easier for me to list scenes better in the Japanese version since I prefer the dub overall.

But the one moment far, far superior in the dub, imo, is the beam struggle between Gohan and Cell. Hands down.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

I don't think I can find one. The Super Saiyan 3 transformation is the only scene that comes to mind, and that's because I really enjoy the soundtrack. Even still, I think the Japanese version ends up winning in the end.

My favorite scenes are when Goku transforms into SSJ, grabs Frieza's hand (the music kicks ass), the beam struggle between Gohan and Cell, Goku turning SSJ 3, and when Goku defeats Majin Buu. The music is just too epic for these scenes.

EDIT: Noah, your sig is incorrect. Dragon Ball Z is a show for men, not children. I'm in my 20s, VegettoEX is... 30s or 40s? Most of us here are adults (18+). We are the demographic whether Toriyama likes it or not.

No, this is not accurate. We are an audience, but we are not the audience. Toriyama specifically wrote the series for young boys, and the series as a whole (all of its productions and all of its merchandise) is specifically created for and marketed at young boys. Any extra audience members they happen to grab are icing on that cake. This is a topic for a separate thread, and it's been doing several times over, but I figured I'd bite that before it goes any further here. Kanzenshuu does not represent the Dragon Ball main audience in any way.

Also, let's not age me up TOO far just yet.

One scene I absolutely love in the dub is when Gohan powers up into "Ultimate." The music and his voice are just an awesome combination. I felt like the Japanese music wasn't as epic in that moment as I'd like it to be. After all, it is a pretty epic moment.

Another scene that I really enjoyed was after Goku defeated Boo with the Genki Dama and Satan asks Goku if he got him. Just the delivery of the lines was great and the music (a slow version of the Trunks theme) was so relieving. It just came together perfectly.

Also, to VegettoEX's point, I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure most of the adult DB fans fell in love with the series as children.

It's like the second time people discuss about my sign, It's just the way I agree about it when people expect a more mature show when something new about Dragon Ball pops up in the media.

But let's keep on topic

Maybe it's just because of how far they came, or how much joy it brought me, but this was one of my favorite dub moments in the franchise:

I prefer the dub of Dragonball over the original aside from a few dialogue changes. Kid Goku, Master Roshi, Tien, and most of the cast in general have great voices and performances in the FUNI dub.

I'm really glad FUNI didn't dub Dragonball until after most of DBZ, because that way the voices improved tremendously.

Even though I'm referencing old FUNI dub, but I really like the way this scene was presented in DB KAI, Sean Schemmel acting was very good! Totally redeemed that "hope of universe" thing that I see like one of the worst adaptations made by FUNI back in DBZ

The only scene in the FUNi dub of Z that I will always prefer over the original JPN version is the SSJ3 transformation. Now that was awesome.

I can't really think of any scenes in the original three anime shows that were better in the English dub. A few that were just as good, and a solid amount that were still very good on their own, but none that were better than the original Japanese version.

When we get to Kai, though, it's a different story. I would say that Kai's English dub as a whole was better than the original Japanese version. That's not to say the original version was bad, because it wasn't, but I couldn't help but notice an overall lack of enthusiasm in the Japanese cast, at least compared to their original performances. I don't begrudge them for it, because Kai might as well be a slang word now for "production woes," not to mention--the biggest point, I feel--that for the Japanese cast, they were literally doing the same thing over again. Conversely, Kai actually was new for the English cast, and I felt a spirit and enthusiasm behind their performances that I didn't get from the Japanese version.

Post-Kai, I'd say that the English and Japanese versions have been equally enjoyable, as the English cast is better than it has ever been, and the Japanese cast seemed to regain the enthusiasm they lost in Kai now that they have new story content. I can literally set my Blu-Rays to either audio track and be completely content. It's a good era for fans who want an English dub that's faithful to the original!
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Goku becoming a Super Saiyan in Movie 5, set to the tune of "Change" by Deftones. Maybe it's not better-better in the spirit of DB, but I am shamelessly nostalgic for it. I'm 10, it's Friday night, time to rent Cooler's Revenge from Blockbuster, buy a bag of Starburst, and crack open one of those Beckett DBZ magazines.

That scene of Goku quitting to Freeza is so bad in English. Not only does the amateur tier acting destroy it, but the music isn't fitting either.

The ones I really like are based off of nostalgia and even I know that they aren't actually good. Like B, I would rent Z Movie 5 from Blockbuster. It was the edited version, I remember cause I noticed the cuts when I saw the uncut version later on. I guess that whole movie's dub is a bit nostalgic. Also, Movie 4's False Super Saiyan scene. I don't know why. I guess my 8 year old brain thought the music with it was cool.

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

Goku telling Vegeta to shut the fuck up and fuse with him against Super Boo. I'm sure there's someone arguing it's out of character, but Christ, people, the monologue plays over dead air. It's just a lazy clip montage in the original.

This scene right here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INlntMXEe_I Chris Sabat acting here is by far my favorite scene from him. You can see the anger, the sorrow, and the emotion in this one scene

I kind of liked that scene where Freeza is having Super Saiyan flashbacks and in the dub Goku whispers "Freezaaaah".

Otherwise, nope.

In the dub, Boo knows who Dende is. He's like "Dendes healing powers" or something like that.
In the original. "Impossible! He’s been restored to the way he used to be! Who is that runt?!" You have piccolo absorbed! How do you not know who it is?!

Definitely this scene, it's one of my favourite scenes in the entire series: http://youtu.be/NSAoB_MnTxo
Goku: "Did you let yourself be a slave?!"
*Vegeta kills civilians*
Vegeta: "Tell me, is it slavery when you get what you want?!"
Those lines weren't in the original, but they're one of the few line changes/added dialogue that I actually like.
