I consider the 'movie canon' to be a disconnected, alternate version of events derived from the anime canon.

I interpreted it like time travel. Arc 1 is interrupted by the Arc 2 due to the player now controlling Frieza, but then Arc 2 is defused by the player and 18 directly changing the actions of the villain in Arc 3. Ergo, Arc 3 should be taken as the "final" storyline with any compatible elements from Arc 1.

Xenoverse's story reads like bad fanfiction.

When it comes to video games, I tend to take the concepts and characters but not the actual plot. And only when I feel they actually improve on the world.

Okay, fair enough, I guess. I personally prefer the anime over the manga anyday. Storywise the manga for me is like playing an old Pokémon game, hardly any story at all. Maybe I am too spoiled narratively as JRPG fan of Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Drakengard's multiverse, Kingdom Hearts, Shin Megami Tensei and the likes.

Alternative 1:
Manga with Toriyama written movies.
DB Manga > BoG movie > RoF movie

Alternative 2:
Pure manga.
DB Manga > DB Super Manga

Pick either of the above for the "true Toriyama canon." Tough to say as he was involved from both.

Anime Canons:

First Anime Canon
DB Anime > Z Anime > GT Anime (With Bardock and Trunks TV Specials)

Second Anime Canon
Kai Anime > Super Anime

Why two for the anime? Because Super was the sequel on TV to Kai, and I think it works better with less plot holes to consider DB/DBZ/DBGT and DB Kai/DB Super as two separate anime adaptations of the same manga. And also therefore DBGT still has its place - as the third part to the original 80s/90s Dragonball anime which it was. I think they would have been better off not including the end of the manga in Kai and just continuing to Super after the Majin Buu defeat since they knew when Super would take place. That way if they ever continue the Super story further and decide to write out or rework the end of the manga you have a more seamless product.
