Help Guide for DBZ Funimation Singles DVDs (links + screens)

Post by Iberian_Saiyan » Sat Apr 02, 2016 3:37 pm

Just first off, this is going to be a long list due to being a collection of single DVD volumes albeit there was boxsets for some of these but I'll be using the individual Amazon product pages as the prices are lower (example; Garlic Jr. box is out of stock so singles are the solution). Worth mentioning, as most here know these feature Japanese episode titles, textless OP/EDs, in its original unaltered fullscreen aspect ratio and colour corrected-ish (well, imo the colours do look natural i.e the sky is blue). The English dub's score is by Faulconer Productions.

Really a shame Funimation never re-released this in 30-40 episode packs but well, it's cheap and with the Dragon Box Z out of print this is the only option for those that want an English release of Z in possibly a faithful release. So, to make matters easier I'll split each DVD per volume and part.

Hope this is helpful for someone so all the info and links are right below! :D I'm very pleased by how neat I made this to be. :)

Vols. 1-2 (DVDs 1-17) are English dub only with the Ocean Dub (Saiyan arc to the Namek arc - episodes 1-67 are missing uncut release)

The rest now follows all uncut:

It would be nice if you listed the singles and saga sets for DB and DBGT, considering neither of them have US Dragon Boxes. With the exception of the Saga of Goku sets (which should be listed in both US and AU forms because of the different dubs used), you should do the same thing you did with the dbz singles and link to the US sets.

[Part 1 of 1] - Captain Ginyu: Assault is only Uncut when you select the Japanese Audio from the Main Menu. (Two different video tracks on this DVD).

It's probably nostalgia speaking, but i actually really liked how those old singles looked. The encoding is poor compared to other releases, yet the colours seem more vibrant and natural to me.

No prob. I'll have it ready sometime tomorrow or so.

That's good to know but the only people who'd buy the Single DVDs at this point are fans of the Japanese version, I'd assume. Funimation dub fans would rather just go with the Orange Bricks.

To be honest, it looks quite good to me too but yeah, not as good as the Dragon Box remaster (except for the colours which certainly look a lot better).

No, why would it? It's fiction. The strength of the characters is not possible to reach in reality.
I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

I'd actually say its the complete opposite. Fans who prefer the Japanese lanaguage have the Dragon Boxes. The only reason fans buy the original singles (like me), is to have the show in 4:3 with an accompanying Faulconer score, which comes with the English dubbing, as it's the only way to currently do so.

Not to mention no partial redubbing.

Ah, curses! There was a chance I'd miss one somewhere because there's just so many DVDs.

Thanks, Clutchins. :)

Fans who missed out on the Dragon Boxes Z that don't want to spend to pay more than the RRP then this is what's left now.

That is true, but it's still not the case in terms of what fan base is more likely to purchase them.

That's also true because it's too many DVDs to buy all at once unless it was part of a batch or a middleman/seller/friend that'd gather all and then sell.

I see the boxed 'Saga' set versions on Ebay all the time, usually quite good prices too. Second hand retailers are the way to go for getting them. I got all mine a few years ago in the space of like a couple of months.. GoHastings, Ebay and the odd one off an Amazon marketplace seller.

Well, you still have Kyle Hebert's redubbed narrator in most of the Cell Games.

...aside from that -.-

Seriously though, has there ever been an official release with the Cell Games narrator left intact? More importantly, will there ever be an official release with the original recaps and stuff like a Vol. 2 of Rock The Dragon Collectors set or something?

Thanks for this very helpful guide! I'm currently hunting down the singles … dang it, man, these days they are just about the only way to get the show in 4:3 with English subtitles (and the English dub with Faulconer's score is a neat curiousity, I guess ... Japanese audio all the way, though.) , and now tthe links are all in one place, so thanks again for that! About quality, call me weird, but I am perfectly okay with old shows like this looking their age, film artifacts and all.

One question though, is the "Mysterious Youth" DVD that's listed the first or the second edition?
Champion of 2nd Kanzenshuu Short Story Tenka'ichi Budokai

There should be a witty quote or something down here. I'm just not imaginative enough to come up with anything.

You're welcome and you know, I don't mind if a DB/any anime/series release doesn't have next episode previews as I now just tend to skip to the next episode or wait till next week (Super). So not having NEPs is not a deal-breaker as it is for some.
DragonDuck wrote:One question though, is the "Mysterious Youth" DVD that's listed the first or the second edition?
This one's a bit hard to tell. "Mysterious Youth" v2.0 can be identified if it has a smaller splash on the bottom right than the original bigger splash so it's a case of asking the seller but even then, he/she can't be too certain if it's too big or too small (no pun intended). Alternatively, if the seller could check if the size of the subtitles are normalised (small than big) then that's the v2.0 edition. At the very least Funimation could've done the revised version with a different artwork to clearly identify it.

It's worth notice that no English DB releases have NEPs, for DBZ only the Funi Dragon Boxes for DBZ and for DBGT, only the Single Sets have NEPs.

Correct. NEPs are a fun bonus not not necessarily essential.

If only the singles were complete and uncut, then they'd be the perfect low cost alternative to the Dragon Boxes.
Looking for these rare items/information:

Any information or recordings pertaining to Dragon Ball Z's syndicated run on WAWB
Any information regarding the stations that carried the origin Dragon Ball in the USA
Dragon Box (any deals would be nice)
Shonen Jumps with Dragon Ball in them

I believe the VHS releases had Dale's narrations as they were released a few years before the DVDs.
