Took a 25MB GIF and let Imgur WebM-ize it, and shrink it down to 4MB.

I think this is the approach I'll take for shots like this that don't loop very well. For looping animation, GIFs are still the way to go.

I don't know why so many GIFs I see on sites like Tumblr look like someone recorded their screen with a webcam and made a GIF out of that. Look at all of those nasty fingerprints and dust!

Tumblr places numerous restrictions on how you may upload anything animated. I've had frustrations with their file-size limits in the past. Many users settle and opt to degrade their work instead, for the sake of uploading it to their pages at all. It's also why you'll often see sets of animations. It's just about impossible to make it one, long file. Videos are an okay alternative, but you'll be just as restricted for reasons I can't recall at the moment. Anyway, that's the reason for why anything looks rather lacking in quality when its used as the host. It's intentionally modified as such.
