Great choice. This is why I think Viz should've been picked instead of FUNimation for Dubbing Dragon Ball Series.
I prefer Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, DB/Z/GT Movies, Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball GT in Japanese.
For DBZ Kai and two new Movies I like both Dub and Sub. I Prefer Shunsuke Kikuchi Soundtracks over All other Composers.

Thanks, glad you liked it. It bugs me that Bang Zoom didn't even think of Sinterniklaas for Goku. Lex Lang is a great voice actor, but he doesn't fit our hero.

Yes his voice is simply too deep and not the kind of voice I can imagine for Gokū.

That being said, Bang Zoom did a great job in casting McConnohie for Kaio. That guy has one of the best regal voices for old guys.

Would you guys have wanted the show at a later time than when the Funimation dub happened? Asking as a lot of the guys mentioned were still teenagers in 1999, and still youg or not acting yet by the time Z ended in 2003.

With this cast, probably at a later time. If LA had dubbed DBZ in the 1990's, I think I would have gone with Richard Cansino for Goku and Kirk Thornton for Vegeta. I would have had Wendee Lee reprising as Bulma.

Lex Lang was a pretty bad fit for Goku but I could see him as a badass Tenshinhan.

Lately, I've thought that Vincent Tong would've made a fantastic Tenshinhan if he used his Junjie voice.

There are a few other Vancouver actors that I would've liked to have heard in Dragon Ball roles, some of which have probably been mentioned before, others have not. Might as well post them here.

Lord Slug: Gary Chalk
Cooler: Christopher Judge
Android 13: Michael Donovan (transformed state)
Paragus: Ron Halder
Bojack: Mark Acheson

Bardock: Mark Hildreth - Something along the lines of Heero Yuy but played with more passion and energy (only possible if dubbed in the early 2000s, since he's in LA now) or Paul Dobson as an alternative.
Toma: Jim Byrnes
Selypa: Kathleen Barr
Totepo: Richard Newman
Pambukin: Terry Klassen

Krillin: Sam Vincent
King Piccolo/Daimaō: Scott McNeil

Cam Clarke could work as either Goku, Bardock or Zarbon.

Find it interesting you can see a turtle as Turtle Hermit's student. Not bashing, but thought it was interesting thought.

I'm not really convinced of that, even his higher pitched voices sound a bit too cool and heroic for Krillin in my opinion. While he could work as Yamcha I think it would be a waste, I would prefer Yamcha to have a youthful yet somewhat rugged voice, it suits his desert bandit roots and wolf style of fighting. VIncent Tong is a much better fit for Tien in my view.

Well, Sinterniklaas and Clarke could simply nail Goku's personality to a tee. Come to think of it, Rob Paulsen would also be a great Goku, Krillin or Yamcha. Maybe Barry Gordon or Townsend Coleman could also fit.

I like Michael Donovan's work, but I can't really see him as Piccolo. Can't think of a voice he's done that sounds demonic. Ross could fit King Piccolo or Frieza with a deeper and calmer version of his Green Goblin voice. Heck, I get the feeling that he could play Vegeta.

Hildreth sounds too young for Bardock IMO.

I can see why you would say that on first impression but my justification for it was simply to try and match the Japanese version's use of Nozawa in both Bardock and Goku roles without actually going to the same length of casting Goku's English actor to play both in the dub. While casting the same actor would have been the more faithful approach I think it might have ultimately felt more jarring and out of place for an English speaking DB audience at the time. The Ocean English versions had already ditched the tradition of Goku's English actor playing the Son family and Turles so the precedent had already been set to not have the same actor. That being said, I tried to come up with a middle ground that feels different and unique but also somewhat familiar to the Goku actors we'd been used to hearing from Vancouver before Kirby Morrow took over (who in this hypothetical scenario I'm omitting just for simplicity's sake, no hard feelings, we love ya Kirby).

When it comes to why I chose Mark Hildreth I simply think he has the benefit of sharing a similar cadence and vocal quality to both Ian Corlett and Peter Kelamis (both of whom had played Goku for Vancouver's Dragon Ball Z dubs at the time) whilst also maintaining a more serious quality to his voice. I think it works in that it's close enough to Ocean Goku 1 & 2 to feel like familiar ground whilst clearly being its own unique thing, I also think for the purpose of the film it's more humanising to go with a heroic and slightly more youthful voice as opposed to a deeper, more badass voice (although that can work in its own way, which is why I'm not opposed to Paul Dobson). And yes, I realize Bardock isn't a traditional good guy but he is the protagonist of the film so casting him too evil wouldn't have worked unless you were going the badass route. While Hildreth isn't as "badass" sounding he can pull off a cool and heroic voice which is an appropriate tradeoff in my view. GIven the right direction, I think he certainly could have fit the role very well, it just would have been a different take than we're used to.

I think it's also important to keep in mind that part of the reason a more youthful Bardock English casting might feel so weird is that we're already used to Sonny Strait's deeper interpretation. Ocean wouldn't have been trying to match Funimation's castings, especially if they had gotten to the Bardock special first. I think a mistake a lot of people make when choosing hypothetical DB castings is that they fall into the trap of choosing someone just because they sound close to the Funimation actor rather than someone they would have chosen if they'd never heard the Funimation version.

While Ward Perry did an excellent job playing Turles, I think Kelamis could have also worked. I'm thinking that maybe his Whiplash voice from Iron Man: Armored Adventures would have fit him pretty well, without the effects.

Anyway, who do you think would have been good choices for Android 14 and 15?

You are aware why I mentioned them right?

Back on topic, while I like the Funimation cast, wouldn't have minded if Bra and Pan were voiced by Brynna Drummond and Clare Corbett. Haven't herd the former's voice really (don't watch Friendship is Magic really) but more so for that in-joke kinda. And am I a bad person when Super gets to it, I can see Black Goku voiced by Mr. Sabat in his Garterbelt voice?

Re: What'd a proper English cast of Dragon Ball sound like?

It's not so much of a "proper cast", and I like the Funi cast, but I think this would be interesting:

Goku- LeVar Burton
Gohan- Wil Wheaton
Bulma- Marina Sirtis
Piccolo- Michael Dorn
Chi-Chi- Denise Crosby
Krillin/Dr. Gero- Brent Spiner
Cell- Jonathan Frakes
Baba- Gates McFadden
King Kai/Narrator- Patrick Stewart

All are good actors, though some might laugh at this a little when they realize something in common.
