(EDIT: I found something!) Is there anywhere I can read really old Dragon Ball threads?

Post by Forte224 » Sun May 14, 2017 12:25 pm

EDIT: I found something! I made a post farther down but figured I'd edit it in up here: https://www.reddit.com/r/dbz/comments/5 ... m_the_90s/

I'm talking like back around when the show first was airing in the States or a little after. I can find stuff from like 2004+ and I know the internet wasn't as widespread back farther, but I'm just curious if there's like and old website I can check out and see people's thoughts at the time, if I'm making any sense. Or does something like that simply not exist?

You could probably find something but it'll be really hard cause a lot of sites from back then (90's-early00's) are probably closed now.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

I think each site is different so it depends on what kind of service VegettoEX (he runs this place right ?) is using. There are topics here from when everything moved here from Kanzentai so that's a good sign.

If you look at the oldest threads on this very site you can find threads from around 2004. It's pretty amusing reading old stuff from more than 15 years ago with people arguing about the same things people do now, not counting the stuff that didn't exist back then like Kai and Super.

You can find the same power level debates, the same complaining about the humans (Krillin/Yamcha/Tien) treatment, the same saga debates, the same dub debates, etc. back in 2004 that feel like posts you would read today.

Yeah I don't really know what I'm expecting. Bummer there's nothing from farther back (that anyone's pointed to yet or that I've found yet) but the 2004 onward stuff is always an interesting read. Especially the theories of how the series could continue and if GT is canon or not. It's like, oh, you guys have no idea what's coming

Yeah, it's so amusing to especially read posts saying, "There will NEVER be a new Dragonball series after GT bombed" or "Toriyama wants nothing to do with Dragonball anymore" or "Dragonball is dead in Japan now."

I remember so many people wanted DBZ to continue after the Buu saga finished airing in the U.S. People had to be told time and time again there would never be a new Dragonball series ever again. How ironic it is then that in the year 2015 a new Dragonball series was actually announced.

It still feels surreal to this day that we actually have a new Dragonball series airing weekly in the modern year.

Why ? in the manga they were treated pretty good overall.

I remember when it was announced people said it would never go past the Champa arc or reach 100 episodes yet here we are with 2 more arcs and nearly 100 episodes later with no signs of it stopping.

I think the Opinions section on the website Dragon Ball Z Uncensored is a good place to get fan feedback on when the dub first started airing.
Do you follow the most comprehensive and entertaining Dragon Ball analysis series on YouTube? If you do, you're smart and awesome and fairly attractive. If not, see what all the fuss is about without even having to leave Kanzenshuu:

Internet Archive is your friend. I've been using the Internet since 1997 when I was 6 and been on DB fan forums since 2001. The DB fandom sure has changed a lot. By the mid 2000's around 2006, the Toonami era fandom has completely take over the old fandom.

The install of this forum dates back to 2004 when we personally began running the software. Related: I have zero plans to ever take down this website, and the four of us will make plans to ensure its longevity.

People need to think outside the box a little bit here: the internet is more than web forums! The newsgroup alt.fan.dragonball (and before it, a little more generally, rec.arts.misc.anime) existed long before we had functional web-based forums, and all of that is (slightly unfortunately) archived for all time due to its decentralized structure.

(The newsgroup was mentioned in the later update to the first post, but I'm just kinda adding it here since most others later in the thread didn't really address it.)

The oldest post on the web of Dragon Ball that I can find a9re:

8/29/1990
>Interesting note. Dragon Ball Z is said to be one of the more popular
>>animes currently in Japan.
"...is said to be..." Well, truth to tell, very simply, it is. I mean,
>like wow, say that again. When I was there (no less than three weeks
>ago -- (just as a side-note for interested and/or sympathetic parties,
>I have finally gotten over the worst of the jet lag coming back...!)),
>there was Dragonball stuff like everywhere! I mean, everywhere!
>Apparently, there's a new Dragonball movie out in Japan currently (or
>was it soon to be out? well, whatever.), and for fear of becoming
>too redundant in my speech, I shall not mention once more that there
>was Dragonball stuff like everywhere! (sorry) I mean, the hype, the
>publicity, the... everything... was simply... Well, there was a lot.
>I mean, it was like second only to... uh... Hm. Nothing seems to
>be coming to mind, for some reason. Well, anyway, everybody knows
>that Dragonball is a kid's show, right? But there it was really big
>in Japan, so I thought, Heck. I might as well get the first manga
>volume [they're up to around 18 or 19, i think] just to see what
>the story's about and if it's any good. So I did. And it's actually
>pretty funny. But that's just my opinion..
One reason that Dragon Ball Z is so popular is its diminutive form, like
Super-Deformed (SD) characters. I must admit, I'm hooked myself.

missed, I'd be interested in adding it.

It is always cool to see that people was talking about Dragon Ball before I was born. I was told that you had DB fans before the Internet was even created in the US. People would trade RAW tapes before fan subbing exist.

Just think all those people who were already teens or adults in the 80's or 90's when Dragonball was airing to be old enough to talk about it online or travel to Japan...these people are like 50 years old now. Goddamn, it makes you wonder if any of them are watching Super.

It's times like this it's easy to forget Dragonball is over 30 years old. All the people who were already 10 when it first came out in 1986 are now 45+ years old.

That's what I'm wondering. They were apparently hardcore enough to put up with the barely functioning internet of that time period just to find other fans who they could go to a whole heap of trouble to swap tapes with. Surely they haven't just forgotten.

You can find the same power level debates, the same complaining about the humans (Krillin/Yamcha/Tien) treatment, the same saga debates, the same dub debates, etc. back in 2004 that feel like posts you would read today.
The old Daizenshuu EX threads are worth reading just for ruthless VegettoEX.

I remember finding a link to a pre-public internet chat from 89 talking about anime, however Dragonball was only sparsely mentioned and the forum that had the link seems to have disappeared.

Man, I remember posting on the planetnamek.com boards around 1999-2001, and like others have said, the discussions weren't too different than what we see today. I do remember the arguments between the "dubbies" and "subbies" would often devolve into the absolute nastiest flame wars I ever saw on the internet.
