What if Family Guy did a Dragon Ball-based skit?

Post by DBZAOTA482 » Sat Jun 10, 2017 5:48 pm

The only anime FG has directly referenced specifically was Speed Racer but they've made fun of anime as a whole before so they must know about Dragon Ball:

It could be like this... Peter in the bathroom trying to go Super Saiyan and family questioning his behavior.

Peter: *loud grunting and screaming*
*Brian and Lois are behind the bathroom door*
Brian: What's wrong with Peter? He sounds terribly constipated.
Lois: *sigh* No... he's just trying to turn Super Saiyan again.
Brian: Doesn't he realize it's not real and even if it was, he has to be a Saiyan to do it?
Lois: I've tried... but he won't listen to me.
Peter: *still grunting with Lois and Brian looking concerned* Shut up, we've all tried to go Super Saiyan once!!
*Peter transforms into a Super Saiyan and wrecks the whole bathroom breaking down the bathroom door as he slowly walks out*
Peter: *in a silent, menacing voice*This isn't even my final form.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

My prediction is a lot of dead air and a small awkward cough.

I doubt the writers of Family Guy have watch Dragon Ball. Speed Racer is from the 60's, it's a show that even your Parents or Grand Parents (For the younger members on this board) probably watch as a kid.

The only reason to care about Family Guys is for the huge ratings it gives to Dragon Ball Super and Toonami as a whole when it airs before them.

Judging by the segments, I don't think that those associated with Family Guy like anime. They're pretty much mocking it. I think if they mocked DBZ, surely someone would be upset by it... Not me because I think it would be pretty funny. Robot Chicken mocked Dragon Ball and it was hilarious.

Robot CHicken never mocked Dragon Ball, that implies they even knew what the fuck they were talking about outside of namedropping Goku and Gohan.

Making a parody skit about Dragon Ball is pretty much the same thing as mocking it.

I know I've said Dragon Ball Z Abridged is not a parody, but do you think TFS mock and hate Dragon Ball?

Considering Family Guy doesn't actually understand the things it makes fun of (eg. that misguided Aquaman bit), I'd expect a Dragon Ball skit to come off as really cringey to people like us that know the series.

As for the thread, I really don't like Family Guy, so even if they ever were to skit it, I doubt I'd find it funny.

That's my point exactly, Parodies arent (Always) mean spirited take that towards a property and of its fans. It can also be a loving homage to it!

The Robot Chicken one wasn't funny (though kudos for one of that drummer guy looking like Toriyama could have drawn him), and was fairly inaccurate. You see Goku, Gohan, and Goten stockings... but you see Goku with "Gohan" (who is a child and has Goku's hairstyle...so should be Goten)

My entire point is that I see that Robot Chicken was mocking it because they clearly weren't fans (at least based on that skit they weren't). I'd imagine Family Guy would do something similar if they'd go for it.

I'd love a tasteful, thoughtful, clever parody of Dragon Ball by fans, be they Western or otherwise.

Oh wait...we've had one for a decade.

Robot Chicken mocked anime because they were so frustrated that 100% pure 'Murican-made cartoons weren't dominating the airwaves. Western networks & corporations are so oblivious to their tremendous privilege in both finance & influence that they got flustered that shows they acquired from another country - to the point where they even tried to produce their own anime (see: Avatar TLA & Voltron sequel) to make a (huge) quick buck a lot of the qualities the Japanese had carved out in their entertainment, while totally alienating the people who established the medium through their own isolated struggle.

* Hollywood historically has portrayed the Japanese as racist caricatures, often incompetent or as lacking in physical capacity. Rarely if ever did they get lead parts, & this is all only if they were lucky to even make it into Hollywood - & shouldn't even have had to, their art should've stood on its own but Hollywood has only ever promoted American-based stories. Anime was a way for the Japanese to subvert these traditional prejudices & craft a way for their artists to express themselves - & their work could only be secretly imported for many years due to these prejudices - we had to rename all the characters, & replace much of the music. [

In the 80s & 90s, their work was continued to be misportrayed & misrepresented, as racist, sexist, & violent by often ignorant & xenophobic Western journalists. Anime was either "kids' stuff" or "far too racist, sexist, & violent", while American cartoons are seen as "wholesome" & "enjoyable". To lay it on real thick: whenever Japanese media gets popular, we have imitation American works of it - & the kicker is these works are often praised as works of art. For doing the same things that anime has been doing for years, & getting mocked for.

Robot Chicken's parody shows just what little sense of irony the producers at AS had. Yay for blatant, ignorant racism.

Geez, don't look so far into it. I thought it was funny because it wasn't accurate to the story and that's okay. Whatever, I guess I have different taste. I didn't take it so seriously.

I don't recall anime as a whole ever being painted as racist and sexist... the stereotype seemed to be more along the lines of "anime is all extreme violence and tentacle porn," based on the more ignorant/bashing sorts of news stories I've stumbled across over the years. Sort of the same issue a lot of people had with video games starting in the early/mid '90s where things like Mortal Kombat started to show up; it was always gory stuff and sexual stuff that people freaked out over. The racist accusations mostly focused on specific characters/monsters (Mr. Popo of course, and the Pokémon species Jynx) resembling racist caricatures rather than being a broader thing.

And then in the mid/late-'90s Pokémon gave a bunch of kids seizures and that was the thing people latched on to for a little while rather than the "adult" content... and then after that there were all the religious people labeling various anime series (among other things) as Satanic because of some random detail like "they have psychic powers!" or "that character has horns!", which led to every single dubbed show censoring out words like "Hell" and "demon" for a while just to avoid stirring up even more of a religious-nut panic.

I'll never forget that clip of a priest explain the devil's influence, saying that pokemon are demons all while pointing to a picture of Jigglypuff.
