Does DBZ have the most over-hyped anime English dub of all time?

Post by DragonBallKing » Fri Jul 28, 2017 6:49 pm

I'm not trying to bash those who like the old Funi dub, but I really wanted to talk about this. It seems that even among hardcore subbies who say that 99% of all dubs are awful DBZ, YuYuHaksho, and Bebop are the exceptions. They even go as far to say that Funi is worse as a dubbing company than they where 15 years ago. What is the reasoning behind this?

Nostalgia that is why. They probably only watch anime on Cartoon Network for many years until they discover the Internet in the mid-late 2000's and found out about subtitle anime on the web.

Dragonball Z was one of the most exposed animes in the late 90's and early 2000's like Pokemon was. For that reason alone millions of casuals watched it who knew nothing about the original or the franchise in general and grew up with it.

I've heard many Western fans of Dragon Ball (Z) who prefer the dubbed version of Dragon Ball (Z) purely because it was the first experience with the show and, ya know, nostalgia and all that shit. But I've never come across the notion that some fans have where they claim that the dub of Dragon Ball z is the best dub of any anime ever.

I've seen several of those people on places like Gamefaqs https://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/2000121 ... s/75378030
apparently DBZ is terrible in Japanese and the only anime besides YYH and Bebop worth watching in English. Some people just have such a large hatred for Nozawa and the Kikuchi score that they would rather have bad acting which they complain about for every other Dub.

As I said before, I notice a lot of people who watch anime on Cartoon Network did not watch any other anime expect for stuff on CN, KidsWB! and Fox Kids until they discover stuff on the Internet until 2004-2009. They let nostalgia take over their critical thinking skills and be like "I saw it first. So it's good". It's not just with DBZ, but anything too.

It always kinda bothers me when people bitch about dub changes in stuff in Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece, Naruto and Digimon, but are okay with DBZ. If you ask me, Funimation dubbing Dragon Ball back in the day was not much different than how people like DIC, 4kids and Saban did with their anime titles.

What changes did they make to the early Naruto Dub? Other than "believe it".

I remember Naruto's dub was mostly fine and the changes that they made was super small. There was a Naruto fanbase before the show was dubbed in 2005 and everyone was hating on the dub when it was airing on CN on the web. Same goes with One Piece and Bleach.

I never found the English dub to be "overhyped". On the contrary, it gets its fair share of flack, and is nearly universally agreed to be Funimation's weakest dub.

That's the general consensus only here on Kanzenshuu. If you go anywhere else the Funi DBZ dub is immune from hate and its fans are the strong majority while Japanese fans are the minority.

When you compare it to other anime dubs in the 90s, I'd say the hype is justified. It was one of the best of its time, imo.

Nowadays, I feel the Buu and Cell sagas hold up well. Kai dub is great, minus the horrific soundtrack.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

I don't think so. I'd say the dubs for Fullmetal Alchemist and Cowboy Bebop are more overhyped, and that's not meant to be a knock on these dubs since they deserve their hype.

There are good anime dubs back in the 90's. Macross Plus, Ghost in the Shell (1995), Cowboy Bebop (Dubbed in 1999 before it aired on AS in 2001), The Professional: Golgo 13, Wicked City, Black Jack OVA, Perfect Blue, Slayers, Dominion Tank Police, Bastard!! and several others had good dubs back in the 90's. Sure you had trashy dubs like the Manga UK dubs of Devilman OVA 1-2 and Angel Cop, but those are so bad they are good type of dubs.

The DBZ dubs from Funimation (Both the 1996-1998 Saban era dub and 1999-2003 Funimation's In House dub) are still really bad and are the type of dubs that are made for kids in the 90's. Not much different than what we got with Sailor Moon, Digimon, Pokemon and Tekkaman Blade in the mid-late 90's in my opinion.

Even in the 90's and early 00's it wasn't special, Evangelion and ghost in the shell where dubbed in 96 and set the standard for accuracy in dubs, the Bebop came in 99 and set the standard for good voice acting. The old dub had neither, but your free to like it if you want.

Those dubs are a bit overhyped, but there still great dubs. OG Funi DBZ on the other hand doesn't deserve any of the credit it gets, and should never be put on par with actual good dubs like FMA and Bebop, hell even YYH stayed mostly close to the source with a few added jokes and some pretty good acting.

The YYH dub is good, but I never liked Sabat's Kuwabara and I find Cook's performance as Yusuke to be overrated.

The YYH dub is alright, I feel fans should check out the Japanese version of the show. Watching YYH in Japanese made me love the series 100X more.

Agreed, I love Chiba's Kuwabara the way he goes from sounding like a tough punk to squealing like a pig. It's like he switches between his Raditz and Pilaf.
