How much influence does Toyotaro have over Toriyama now?

Post by DSB » Fri Oct 13, 2017 3:18 am

Does Toriyama really looks at him as his successor? Do we have any clue on whether Toriyama actually heeds to any ideas of Toyotaro?

An update on the Dragon Ball room would be welcome.

Well, this was shared by the official Dragon Ball Z Video Games page:

"Toyotaro has taken up the mantle of drawing Dragon Ball... Toyotaro's wonderful skills allow the Dragon Ball universe to be brought back to life in the present."

It's pretty much impossible to answer this question comprehensively. We really don't know every in-and-out of the production process, and we rarely get truly-candid thoughts from people.

What we do *DO* know is:
  • Toriyama wanted to see Toyotaro use more diverse angles in his drawings; that being said, he was perfectly fine with Toyotaro incorporating some of his own new ideas into the mix (see: manga vol. 1 interview)
  • Toyotaro was ultimately brought on to do character designs for various Gods of Destruction, which obviously had production ramifications beyond just the manga version (see: design/name reveals)
  • Toriyama still has very specific particularities that he obsesses over and will go to great lengths to correct (see: manga vol. 1 interview)

To specifically answer your question about him as his successor here is the original text.
"I've been drawing manga less often these days, so Toyotaro has taken up the mantle of drawing Dragon Ball. I still contribute the basic story ideas, but Toyotaro's wonderful skills allow the Dragon Ball universe to be brought back to life in the present."

The "Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2" Manga
drawn by Akira Toriyama'a chosen Successor Toyotaro, starts from the very next page!

Not sure how much more clear cut that can be. As far as how that affects the manga/anime there is information linked in this thread of examples but the very specifics of it we do not know.

I think Toriyama is slowly passing on responsibility to Toyotarō in terms of character design, as evidenced by him designing the GoDs. That being said, I think Toriyama will still be 100% running the show in terms of story for the foreseeable future.
Dragon Ball Arc Rankings: 1. Piccolo Daimaō 2. Saiyan 3. 22nd Budōkai 4. 23rd Budōkai 5. Hunt For the Dragon Balls 6. Zamasu 7. Moro 8. Tournament of Power 9. 21st Budōkai 10. Broly 11. Zero context, zero setup. Its in NO way meant to be seen as a "beginning point" for ANYTHING other than the next story arc. It flows precisely and fluidly from where things left off in the aftermath of the 23rd Budokai and mostly hits the ground running from there without really stopping to look back. You're plopping someone into the middle of a book starting at chapter 195 out of 519 for absolutely no good goddamn reason, with very minimal opportunity to look back at much needed context and character/story growth.

He's his successor in terms of drawing and it seems like he might be helping with character designs moving forward. I do think he's preparing him to fully take over but as of Super, I think Toriyama will be the one to finish it before giving Toyotarou whatever Toei decided to do after.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.
