Old VHS Fansubs
I know there are quite a few people here that remember the Anime Labs fansubs from way back when. If you haven't heard of the Anime Labs sub, please youtube it - it's an interesting oddity.
I want to create a digital database of these old interpretations of the series and am looking for donations of full episodes (will happily accept digital format of course) or I'm willing to buy the VHS cassettes themselves at a reasonable price. I currently own around 30 tapes and have converted a few already. I own mostly the Namek arc through the end of the series. None of Dragon Ball and the first few episodes of GT. I don't consider this pirating or bootlegging because the novelty is in the nostalgia of these inaccurate subs and overall low quality.
Not just looking for the Anime Lab's fansub, all are welcome.

Fortunately, an extensive digital database already exists. I've dropped you a line with more information and would have to agree, despite the questionable lawfulness of them, those raw, channel and fan subtitled VHS tapes deserve to be archived for their idiosyncrasies as well as the impact that they had.

I've always thought it would be cool to someday gather together a bunch of old fansubs and convert them to a proper subtitle format(Probably ASS format, though SRT would work too) so they can be synced to proper releases of the show. Would be fun to have something like that out there.
It'd be like Dragon Radar for old fansubs.
It'd be like Dragon Radar for old fansubs.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

It'd be a mad amount of work, though...Robo4900 wrote:I've always thought it would be cool to someday gather together a bunch of old fansubs and convert them to a proper subtitle format(Probably ASS format, though SRT would work too) so they can be synced to proper releases of the show. Hell no. But you know, 1-67 and the great saiyaman saga has had fansubs typed off. Although unfortunately mostly ngn and pearl subs.Robo4900 wrote:Worth it, though.sangofe wrote:It'd be a mad amount of work, though...

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree for now.sangofe wrote:Hell no. But you know, 1-67 and the great saiyaman saga has had fansubs typed off. Although unfortunately mostly ngn and pearl subs.
Still, I would like to see these old fansub tapes preserved in some form at least. Admittedly, typing them out is something that would take a lot of time, so that's something to consider in the future, but preserving the tapes, and getting good quality rips online for fans to enjoy is the important part right now.

I'm sure it's been done but I was considering doing so for Anime Labs' infamous interpretation of movie 13, as it's difficult to find in anything other than almost decades-old low-quality encodes, which were admittedly appropriate for monitors and internet speeds available at the time.Robo4900 wrote:I guess we'll have to agree to disagree for now.sangofe wrote:Hell no. What's funny is some of those tapes even included and translated the theatrical previews, which sadly, as far as I know, has not been the case for any home video releases of the movies outside of Japan even today.

They have been timed to Dragon Boxes too, although not very well, but I guess about as good as Funimation timing.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I found the subtitles and uploaded them (these are ONLY subtitles):MadSpecialist wrote:I'm sure it's been done but I was considering doing so for Anime Labs' infamous interpretation of movie 13, as it's difficult to find in anything other than almost decades-old low-quality encodes, which were admittedly appropriate for monitors and internet speeds available at the time.Robo4900 wrote:I guess we'll have to agree to disagree for now.sangofe wrote:Hell no.
