Dragon Ball US Digital Distribution Thread

Post by Scsigs » Mon Mar 19, 2018 3:29 pm

So, we have threads about the physical releases, & even Kanzenshuu has a list of the track record of the various home media releases, & with the digital distribution market being on the same level as other forms of home media, I think keeping track of the digital releases of Dragon Ball, both anime & manga, at least in the US. I don't think the video games would be worth keeping track of, because the majority of them are available digitally ever since the 7th generation of consoles.

So, the list of manga:
Dragon Ball: iBooks, Comixology, Kindle.
Listed under both "Dragon Ball," "Dragon Ball Z," plus "Dragon Ball Full Color."
Dragon Ball Super: iBooks, Comixology, Kindle, Viz.com.

List of the anime shows & movies:
Dragon Ball: FUNimationNow, Amazon, Hulu. English dubbed, subbed only on Hulu & FUNimationNow. SD. 4:3.

Dragon Ball Movies:
Curse of the Blood Rubies: FUNimationNow, iTunes. English dubbed & subbed on FUNimationNow. HD. 4:3.
Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle: FUNimationNow, iTunes. English dubbed & subbed on FUNimationNow. HD. 4:3.
Mystical Adventure: FUNimationNow, iTunes. English dubbed, subbed. HD. 4:3
Path to Power: FUNimationNow, iTunes. English dubbed & subbed on FUNimationNow. HD. 4:3.

Dragon Ball Z: FUNimationNow, Microsoft Store, Amazon. English Dubbed, subbed on FUNimationNow. HD (upscale/bad Orange Brick remaster). 16:9 cropped.

Dragon Ball Z Movies & Specials:
Dead Zone: FUNimationNow, iTunes. English dubbed & subbed. HD. 16:9. Cropped/Closed Matte.
World's Strongest: FUNimationNow, iTunes. English Dubbed & subbed on FUNiNow. HD. 16:9. Cropped/Closed Matte.

Return of Cooler: FUNimationNow, iTunes. English dubbed & subbed. HD. 16:9. Cropped/Closed Matte.
Super Android 13: FUNimationNow, iTunes. English dubbed & subbed on FUNiNow. HD. 16:9. Cropped/Closed Matte.
Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan: FUNimation Now, iTunes. English dubbed & subbed. HD. 16:9. Cropped/Closed Matte.
Bojack Unbound: FUNimationNow, iTunes. English dubbed & subbed. HD. 16:9. Cropped/Closed Matte.
Broly - The Second Coming: FUNimationNow, iTunes. English dubbed & subbed. HD. 16:9. Cropped/Closed Matte.
Bio Broly: FUNimationNow, iTunes. English dubbed & subbed. HD. 16:9. Cropped/Closed Matte.

Bardock: The Father of Goku: FUNimationNow, iTunes. English dubbed & subbed. HD. 16:9. Cropped.
History of Trunks: FUNimation Now, iTunes. English dubbed & subbed on FUNiNow. HD. 16:9. Cropped.

Dragon Ball GT: FUNimationNow, Amazon, Hulu. English dubbed, subbed on Hulu & FUNimationNow. SD. 4:3.

Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters: N/A. English Dubbed (& subbed?). HD. 16:9. Cropped.

Dragon Ball Super: FUNimationNow, Microsoft Store, Amazon, Crunchyroll (sub only). English dubbed & subbed. HD. 16:9.

Future Films:
Dragon Ball Super: Broly: April 16, 2019. FUNimation Now, iTunes, Microsoft Store, Amazon, Vudu. English dubbed, subbed. HD 16:9.

If I have anything missing or incorrect, please let me know.

Updates:
Update 1: Updated to reflect cropping to widescreen on the Z films & series, as well as Kai: TFC.
FUNimationNow also offers both subs & dubs of all DB products available by default.

Update 2: Dead Zone, Lord Slug, & Bojack now on iTunes.

Update 3: The poster for Curse of the Blood Rubies has been updated to reflect its original release, but the title is still referred to as a Z film incorrectly.

Update 4: The World's Strongest & History of Trunks are now on iTunes. Curse of the Blood Rubies' title has now been updated to not have the "Z" in it.

Update 5: Wrath of the Dragon & Super Android 13 now on iTunes.

Update 6: Japanese dubs of DB Mystical Adventure & DBZ Dead Zone & Bojack Unbound added to iTunes.

Update 7: Remaining films & specials added to iTunes.

Back in the days, Dragon Ball Z 01-39 HD episodes were the Level-remaster but that ship has long sailed now. At least DB Movies 1-4 got a Level-like treatment.
Account no longer in use since 03/31/2018.

Not an upscale.
FuniNow uses the Orange Brick masters, but those masters were originally produced in HD. That's what this is. I believe Microsoft uses the BD masters, but I'm not completely sure.

Also, FuniNow's "Season 9" uses the 4:3 Dragon Box masters if you select the subbed option.

I know they were originally screened in widescreen, but it is a crop from the original film masters, so it should be 16:9 cropped, or at least "Closed matte".
Scsigs wrote:Bardock: The Father of Goku: FUNimation Now. English dubbed. HD. 16:9.
History of Trunks: FUNimation Now. English dubbed. HD. 16:9.
These were definitely not originally produced with widescreen in mind, and thus are definitely a crop.

Not a criticism here, just worth noting that the master used here is the Dragon Box scan, at a pre-final stage of cleanup; the image is sharper, and there's a little more grain, but you miss about 1 or 2 lines of pixels from the sides.

Additionally, FunimationNow includes subbed options. Not sure about the other providers, though I think Amazon might.

Otherwise, good breakdown. :)
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Updated.
Amazon offers both the subs & dubs of BOG, RF, & Super. They don't offer subs of the other shows & they don't have the prior 17 films at present. I checked as I was typing this list. I wondered if FUNiNow offered the subs too. I knew they did for Super, since they're simulcasting the series separate from Crunchyroll with their own subs. I'm wondering if there are any other official services I've missed, though.

As for everything else, I'm happy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxSvjnuBeRM

If we're being technical here, I'm almost positive that the true aspect ratios for Battle of God's and Resurrection F are 1.85, not 1.78 (16:9)...

No, why would it? It's fiction. The strength of the characters is not possible to reach in reality.
I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

The only place to stream Dragon Ball Kai is on Amazon Prime. FUNimationNow does not have Kai at all as seen here. Just trailers, Interviews with the cast, and clips from the show which oddly have the Yamamoto score.

You sure about that? Because I have Prime and it doesn't seem to be available for streaming for me.

Ah. See when I think “available to stream on Amazon Prime” I think “included with subscription”.
