Dragon Ball Z Cooler DVD Box Set

Post by The One and Only Nam » Tue Apr 24, 2018 5:26 pm

Was there ever an edited release of the Dragon Ball movies: #4, #5, & #6 (Lord Slug, Cooler's Revenge, and Cooler's Return) in a box set like there was with the uncut edition? I have tried looking everywhere on ebay since it states on the home video guide (http://www.kanzenshuu.com/home-video/na/dbz-movies/) that there was a release. So was there ever a boxed release like the website states?

Nope; the only censored DVD releases there ever were are the DVDs of the BLT dub, the Saban dub, and the edited versions of the first two Pioneer movie dubs included on Rock The Dragon.

I think one of the Coola movies includes a censored version as an alternate viewing option on the uncut Funimation DVD release, so I suppose there is that, if you want to count it, but I think that's about it.

Also, heads-up, those are Dragon Ball Z movies 4, 5, and 6. Saying "Dragon Ball movie" implies you're either just talking about the 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1997 movies, or that you're talking about all 20. Since you said "Dragon Ball movies #4, #5, & #6", that implies you're talking about the first three Z movies.
Dragon Ball naming and numbering conventions in general tend to be pretty screwed, so this is an easy mistake to make, I just suggest you keep this in mind in future. :)
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

I was fairly certain that there were censored Funi DVD singles of the movies

https://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Ball-Supe ... edited+dvd

5-7 were released edited, and I'm pretty sure 4 was too...but IDK.

That's weird. I've never seen those before.

I wonder if they're real, though... Could be bootlegs of the edited versions that were originally included on some of the DVDs, sold as "The edited version" so parents will buy it.

"bootlegs of the edited versions that were originally included on some of the DVDs"

What are you talking about? I was under the impression that uncut and edited DVDs were an either/or kind of situation. Not sure why both would be included...

I know that they had edited releases, but I was initially wondering if the edited singles came in a boxed set like the uncut versions did

Hm. Weird.
I know a couple of the uncut DVDs do include an edited version, and I know the series never had an edited DVD release, so I assumed the movies didn't have an edited DVD release either, and that all there was was simply a few with an edited version as a bonus feature.

Guess you learn something new every day.

No idea. Though I'd say it's unlikely.

I have an edited Lord Slug DVD that oddly came with my Cooler movie boxset (those two were uncut, though). I switched it out with a uncut Lord Slug DVD for consistency sake.

I remember seeing the edited Cooler movies for sale online years ago and being frustrated that the Uncut versions had a higher price. I'm assuming the version on those DVDs is the same version that aired on Toonami US years ago.

Movies 4-6 did receive both edited and unedited boxsets. You can tell which is which depending on the yellow text highlighted on the box:

It is worth noting that the edited boxset does not contain the films as they were presented on Cartoon Network. Similar to the television specials, Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug and Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge replaced Disturbed and Deftone's tracks with music from the Faulconer Productions Dragon Ball Z score and Tendril in order for the network to avoid paying licensing fees. The credits for both films were altered to reflect these changes:

However, when these films aired on NickToons a few years ago, the original U.S. scores were kept intact for both films. In Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug's case, it appears NickToons had accidentally aired an unfinished master that neglected to use an instrumental of the song "Stupify" by Disturbed, which resulted in these lyrics being played on a Y7-FV program:

I've been waiting my whole life for just one, fuck
And all I needed was just one, fuck
How can you say that you don't give a, fuck
I find myself stupefied, coming back again
All I wanted was just one, fuck
One tiny little innocent, fuck
And when I feel like I'm shit out of, Luck
I find my stupefied, coming back again

This error is present on the edited VHS release of the film, but was corrected for the edited DVD. The original uncut DVD retains the vulgar lyrics, but all of the "remastered" releases of the film reverted back to using an instrumental version of the song.
