Funi's renaming of the Z movies have caused this issue...

Post by superfan2024 » Mon Jul 16, 2018 7:02 am

We have Dragon Ball Super: Broly, but then we have Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan. Couldn't Funi just name DBZ M8 "Dragon Ball Z: Burning Battles?"

Don't be silly, that would make sense. Remember, this is pre-Kai Funi we're talking about here...
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Honestly I prefer Funimation's naming scheme of deciding on the subtitle AFTER the script has been finished, as opposed to Toei's approach being the exact opposite and giving us very generic titles that sometimes just barely relate to the picture itself (like Mystical Adventure).

I agree, plus it gives an idea of what's the movie about unlike the more ambiguous titles on the Japanese side. Probably one of the few changes FUNimation made that I prefer.

This movie should be titled

Dragon Ball Super: the ultimate deciding super warrior battle between the Saiyans and their incredible foe at the highest stakes possible in all the universes!!!!!!!

M13 probably the exception to this.

It’s not like FUNimation had any way of knowing that 15 years down the line, there would be a Dragon Ball movie with Broly’s name in the title.

The Japanese titles were laughably bad. It was a good thing they changed them for the west and it's not going to really confuse many people I imagine.

Let's all just be glad none of the main official sources use the Big Green names for these movies...

DBZ movie 1 - In Pursuit Of Garlic
DBZ movie 3 - Super Battle In The World
DBZ movie 9 - Super Guy In The Galaxy
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

I wonder what the Big Green-style names would be for the other movies?

God Guy Battle!
Return of the F!
Or F Under Certain Kamehameha?

I'm literally laughing out loud from these titles. Holy shit it's nice they aren't a "main official" source because we can laugh at that sort of thing instead of having to take it seriously.

Sorry to say this, but all of the Big Green Movie titles (Minus DBZ Movie 1) are official sources. All the titles used are the OFFICIAL English titles Made by Toei. Al of those Janky Translations ARE a “main official” source.

Let's not forget the fourth Predator movie coming out is called 'The Predator' or how the second Pitch Black film, 'The Chronicles of Riddick' was followed by 'Riddick'.

I think we should be happy that Funimation didn't title Movie 8 as "Dragon Ball Z: Broly." Then we'd really have an issue on our hands lol

It's not quite that simple.

Apparently, the movie titles are...
DB movie 1 - The Legend Of Shenron (Toonami title)
DB movie 2 - Sleeping Beauty In Devil Castle (Toonami title)
DB movie 3 - [Unknown. Dragon Ball Wikia says "The Great Mystical Adventure", but without a source to confirm that, I don't trust it]
DBZ movie 1 - In Pursuit Of Garlic (Known as The Dead Zone on Toonami UK)
DBZ movie 2 - The Strongest Guy In The World
DBZ movie 3 - Super Battle In The World
DBZ movie 4 - Super Saiyan, Goku (Known as Super Saiya Son Goku on Toonami UK)
DBZ movie 5 - Super Rivals
DBZ movie 6 - Fight! 10 Billion Power Warriors
DBZ movie 7 - Super Battle Of The Three Super Saiyans
DBZ movie 8 - The Burning Battles
DBZ movie 9 - Super Guy In The Galaxy
DBZ special 1 - The Father Of Goku
DBZ special 2 - Gohan And Trunks
GT special - Four-Star Dragonball Is The Proof Of Courage (Toonami title)

Featuring music from Queen, perhaps?

This is probably my biggest pet peeve of names of video games and movies. Why the hell are there two games called Star Wars: Battlefront II?!

I’d say this new film’s title falls in line with recent trends of “I’d swear it’s intentionally bad” subtitles (the aforementioned Rocky/Rambo films are good examples). It just sounds bad. Doesn’t roll off the tongue or have the punch of a good subtitle; “Dragon Ball Super Broly”. It kinda just hangs there awkwardly, tempting me to ask, ‘What about him?’ At least FUNimation (yes, I’m saying something positive about them for once) slapped a subtitle there. “Battle of Gods” and “Fukkatsu no/Resurrection F” are evocative and impactful titles. “Dragon Ball Super Broly” okay.

i know that, i just make a translation of the french title in english as it seems they used french translation for some of them, for example "Sleeping Beauty In Devil Castle" even if french cover said "le château du démon", the french voice said "la beauté endormie du château du démon" , they just shorten title, but "in pursuit of garlic" it's the same as the french title (big green dub is if i remember well AB group english dub (which is french company)

I'm usually in favor of the Japanese titles but FUNimation made a smart move by simplifying the movie titles which in Japanese can be incredibly long, absurd, nonsensical and full of spoilers. If the title tells you who wins then it kind of defeats the purpose to watch.

Given this change, we have three Broli movies clearly titled as is, and now a fourth.

DBZ Movie 07: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan
DBZ Movie 09: Broly – Second Coming
DBZ Movie 11: Bio-Broly
DBS Movie 01: Broly - The Story of an Unknown Saiyan
