DBS demographic breakdown
f-ism conducts a survey every year by utilizing data collected via entertainment audience research system or "eb-i". It sheds light on the demographics of the industry, audience viewing habits etc. Super useful.
They provide a free sample, so here's DBS demo during Oct 2015 - Mar 2016 and Oct 2016 - Sept 2017 respectively.
No.of viewers (unit=1000 people)

AGE
5-9 yrs. - 12%
10-19 - 17%
20-29 - 13%
30-39 - 26%

Re: DBS demographic breakdown
Thank you for this, I never get why Toei is trying to make DB so kid friendly with the brighter colors, less blood and brutality, emphasis on comedy, simpler stories, etc. as it's not really doing much for the DB brand it seems. Likewise, over time I think it may well in fact cause more harm than good.

Are these Japan's numbers?Saikyo no Senshi wrote:f-ism conducts a survey every year by utilizing data collected via entertainment audience research system or "eb-i". Also, anime in 2017 according to the survey was most popular among 30-40 yr olds.

So Dragon Ball continues to appeal greatly to those far beyond its initial demographic of children.
What a shocker.

When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Re: DBS demographic breakdown
Modern DB has always been aimed at the 15+/adult demographic as opposed to DBH which is aimed at the 6+ demographic actual children, they've known about it from the start but Toei etc constantly talking about aiming the writing at children is basically them having their cake and eating it too, because they can get away with simplistic writing.Lord Beerus wrote:So Dragon Ball continues to appeal greatly to those far beyond its initial demographic of children.

BNHD assumingly realised a lot of their properties merchandise was being consumed by adults so they formed a sister company to Bandai with one of their main intentions to solely focus on adults, naturally DB was affected in a huge way from this change (and for the better).
For the movie we have basically the entire merchandise schedule and only 2 pieces of merchandise will be actually aimed for kids (stickers and a set DBS x DBH gashapon figures). Says it all really. Toei can come out with BS like "oh kids won't be able to last more than 90mins" but they know it's BS the reason is probably so they can screen the film in more screens.

Re: DBS demographic breakdown
Old DB as well. JUMP titles for the most part skew teens/adults. OP, HeroAca and Haikyuu in the list for example also have higher teen/adult viewers than kids. Shingeki, while not JUMP is another shounen series that has a similar fanbase.
Re: DBS demographic breakdown
With these demographics, there's no reason for Toriyama/Toei/Toyotaro to insist on making it only kid-oriented when most of the DB fandom are ages 18 and up. Not only is it stupid from a writing standpoint but also from a financial one too (since its older folks buying most of the merchandise).
Other Shonen and Shojo franchises like One Piece and Attack on Titan are aware of their large (often majority) 18+ fanbases and start to write with them in mind. Its stupid for Dragonball to not do so also.
