Goku Blasts In! ...to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Post by Gyt Kaliba » Thu Nov 01, 2018 10:57 am

Despite some fervent hopes from a lot of people (myself very much NOT included), Goku seems to have missed out on his invitation to join Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. Instead though, he got an invitation to be in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. ...Wait...what?

You read it right. There's going to be a Goku float in the parade. That's...really random, but cool, I think. The video also claims it's the first time a Japanese manga character has been in the parade, but I'm not 100% sure how true that would be (though it wouldn't surprise me - pretty sure they must've had a Pikachu before, but that would count more as a game character probably).

Hahaha! This is something else.

I think they missed out on an opportunity to do a Thanksgiving-y, Gokû energetically eating a turkey leg or something what with his love of food, but this is still pretty neat. I usually don't watch the entire parade, and I'll probably switch back and forth between the NY and Philly parades as usual, but I'll try to catch this part when the schedule comes out.

Re:Pikachu yes technically Pokemon manga exist but as Pokemon was a video game first I’m guessing it doesn’t count as a manga character the same way Son Goku would

When they're inflating Goku's blimp, will his muscles grow more bulky and then transform into a SSJ?

Very cool! I'll make sure to check it out!

Awesome. I love watching the parade and the Goku balloon looks pretty good. It will also be funny to see the NBC announcers awkwardly talk about Dragon Bal.

I don't know why, but learning about this got me really excited. I'm a grown man now, but for a bit there, knowing Goku was going to be a part of this cultural touchstone, made me feel like I was 5 again.

Never thought I'd see this happen, but I also feel that it's about time it did.

They're easing him into the mass American cultural zeitgeist so they'll be prepared when he shows up at the Tokyo Olympics.

The balloon looks cool. If you check Funimation's Twitter, they've got a video of the designers talking about trying to make it look right according to Toei's specifications, which is nice. Last thing we want is a Kitano Goku floating above the streets of new York.

Which makes me think it is ironic. I can't imagine the announcer knows the proper pronounciation and took a shot in the dark, and a lot of fans who heard the broadcast shouted at their TV screens.

Cool! I was watching the CBS Broadcast, so I didn’t get to see that. Wish I did though.

Al Roker pronounced Saiyan better than the American translators. Nominate him into the Kanzenshuu HOF

Its funny My mom looked at me when he said "Sigh-yan" instead of "Say-in" because she thought he said it wrong but I told her he pronounced it correctly lol. I still parade around saying "Say-in" despite knowing the whats correct so she its not her fault, she isnt even remotely a fan, she just knows I love this shit  lol.

I missed seeing the part with Al Roker (I'll catch it online later) but I saw the later part where the one host hesitated on how to produce Gokû. I had family ask me why Gokû's hair is blue now.

I was wondering where in the parade he'd be. We generally flip back and forth between the NY and Philly parades. Right after Pikachu makes sense. It was fun to see a Gokû balloon.

I wonder if it was spelled out phonetically? Maybe toei wrote it?
