Anyone pick up the NEW Blu Rays for Dragon Ball THE MOVIES

Post by TLM Reviews » Mon Nov 05, 2018 10:15 pm

Just curious if anyone has any plans on getting from Japan, and is it worth getting them at the moment or wait for funimation to do a release with the dubbing?

Thanks

I'm waiting for an eventual FUNimation release, in the hopes they treat them like the Z Dragon Boxes and DON'T touch them. Just slap on subtitles and the dub and release them.

As great as the remasters look, I have all the Dragon Box movies synced up with subtitles so importing these blu rays with no subtitles isn't something I'm compelled to do.

Or at least, that's what I keep telling myself over and over.

I'll wait for FUNi to release them. The Japanese covers look tacky as shit with the red bold Blu-ray text. It'd be okay if we were in the 80's but now? Eh.

There's already a thread for this.

No, why would it? It's fiction. The strength of the characters is not possible to reach in reality.
I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

So you have the JAP Dragon Box for the Movies?? How did you sync up subtitles to the dvd?

Also quick question to you, would you say getting the JAP Dragon boxes for DB/Z/GT/MOVIES are still worth it?? How much is the difference between the current Funimations Dragon Box to the Japanese ones?

Thanks

Check out my sig. A user named thejeremymenace made a program that syncs up FUNimation's Simmon's subtitles and the dub with the Japanese Dragon Boxes. On the FUNimation side though, you need their most recent DVD releases (blu rays won't work, old DVD singles won't work). Now, the subtitles aren't put onto the DVDs themselves, they're put onto the files you've ripped to your computer. This wasn't an issue for me, as I have a huge hard drive so I ripped the video and audio lossless, but for a lot of people this isn't a great solution even if they DO have the hard drive space. If you want to learn more about how to do it, shoot me a PM.

As regards whether they're worth it...I would have said yes before these blu ray remasters started happening. We have pretty decent evidence that: 1. They are going to remaster the whole series (since even Bardock seems to be remastered, which is a Z TV special, not a movie), and 2. FUNimation will release them here, due to the recent theatrical screenings supposedly using these new remasters. Nothing is confirmed of course, but with that in mind, it might be better to wait and see what happens, as these new remasters are superior to the Dragon Boxes in a lot of ways. On their own though, the Dragon Boxes look great. Not perfect, but great.

That said, the biggest difference between the Japanese Dragon Boxes and FUNimation's is that the Japanese Boxes cover the whole series: DB, DBZ, DBGT, all 17 movies, and the 3 TV specials. FUNimation's only cover the 291 episodes of Z, they don't even include the TV specials. There are other minor differences between the Z Boxes, but nothing super noteworthy. I have all the Japanese Dragon Boxes because I'm a semi-casual collector, so if you want them for that purpose too, go for it. But if not and you just want the best picture quality for the series...I'd wait and see what happens with all this new blu ray remaster business, as they seem to be better than the Dragon Boxes in several ways, dethroning them as the best picture quality we've seen for the complete series.

Whew, that got wordier than I expected.

I don't think that Funination will release them. They're not a new series, so it's moot any more on their priority list than any other Japanese release. Hell, don't they have their own HD content on Funimation Now that they haven't released? I guess they don't feel that there's enough of a market in this.

Now if there was new content, they'd be all over that and would shell out what it takes to get the footage and not touch it. But would they really want to strike a deal with Toei and pay to have upscaled footage that they already own? I'm not so sure.

They've not bothered to release DB Movies 1-4 before on Blu-ray and now? Forget about it. Practically all of FUNimation's HD remasters are junk so it would be a good thing for them to release actual proper HD versions of the DB-Z Movies/Specials by TOEI.

Hell, they could then even make Broly's Quadrilogy Movie Boxset on Blu-ray. I'd buy that.

P.S. Zima, the Mexican anime distro released FUNimation's DB Movies 1-4 remastered in HD on Blu-ray and it looks amazing. Unfortunately, it's only in Latin Spanish and movie two's fucked with the low framerate (looks gorgeous in high definition, though).

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it!

That said, I will probably wait a bit until next year to see if Funimation does any sort of release for the series once again, and If they do I will most likely buy them.

Thanks for the information once again, and If I have any questions, I will shoot you a pm!!

Even if FUNi put them out, they'll end up poor. Simply put, FUNi have zero quality control when it comes to Blu-ray. I don't feel like going into detail unless anyone here is curious, but their encoding is rather poor with tons of banding and macroblocking in their releases. Very lacklustre releases from them, in general.

I'm hoping, if they do release them, that they'll treat them like the Dragon Boxes and just not touch them. Well, outside of cramming more episodes onto each disc. But, that didn't affect them TOO much I suppose.

I think Professor Who's complain is stemming more from the encoding of the footage itself (although shoving too many episodes on a disc will definitely affect that).

What I mean is that they are monkeys at encoding, regardless of what source they are given.

I'll give some non-DB examples to help prove my point:
Steins;Gate- while the JP BD has some color banding, the FUNi version has it in nearly every frame to varying degrees. Unwatchable. (Can't find any posts on it now, but trust me, it's out there.)
Psycho Pass- more of the same, like S;G, but even worse. https://imgur.com/a/hqNt1m0 (Oh, and that's just from the first 2 minutes of Episode 1)
Re:Zero- so bad, the official Crunchyroll stream looks better. Yes, a 4 mbps stream looks better than a BD from a "professional" company. https://forums.animeuknews.net/threads/ ... ion.17066/ http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/114287 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php? ... count=1805
Assassination Classroom- they lowered the brightness so low, you can barely see anything in nighttime shots. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.ph ... st14929764
Cowboy Bebop- they removed all the grain, then smeared it, then applied a ton of artificial grain. (Can't find any posts on it now, but trust me, it's out there.)
Cowboy Bebop The Movie- the grain is rendered as macroblocking. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php? ... count=2527
FMA Brotherhood- encoding BD at lowest possible bitrates. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php? ... count=2176 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php? ... count=1948

Actually, they encode everything at horribly low bitrates...

Yu Yu Hakusho- egregious use of Low Pass Filter. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php? ... count=2021
Hyouka- mosquito noise artifacts in a single episode.
Soul Eater- poor compression and aliasing. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php? ... count=1965
Black Butler- terrible source, and atrocious encoding. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php? ... count=1967

And those are the ones I could find easily. There's far, FAR more.

I don't need to remind you guys about the season sets, the Orange Bricks, and how they canceled the Level sets even though more fans voted for 4:3 than 16:9. But yeah. FUNi are really, really bad at encoding.

Funimation just came out with their own Blu-ray of it, which is what he's talking about. General consensus is, compared to the old Sony BD, audio's an improvement thanks to lossless 5.1 tracks but video is a downgrade.
