Dragon Ball: Saga Sets vs. Yellow Bricks vs. Madman Box Sets
As I’m considering buying Dragon Ball before it was tampered with (Blue Bricks), I wonder, which of these would be the best option?
I understand that all of these releases use the same video source but have minor differences among them? What would those be?
For example, I heard that some use interlacing while others use progressive scan. Or there’ve been mentions of ghosting issues.
And what about financially?
Also, I’m aware that the first 13 episodes (the saga of Goku) are only available uncut as a Madman single. Do the Yellow Bricks and Madman box sets use the same source for those 13 episodes?
Thanks very much in advance.

The "Yellow Brick" Manga UK release is literally the same as the Madman sets...but without the disc replacement program for the Fortuneteller Baba discs.

What do you mean by disc replacement program?Danfun64 wrote:The "Yellow Brick" Manga UK release is literally the same as the Madman sets...but without the disc replacement program for the Fortuneteller Baba discs.

The "Yellow Bricks" as you call them are exactly the same as Madman's fat packs. The difference is, the Manga UK repackaged version is cheaper.. sorta.

I see. And how do they compare with the American Saga sets?JohnnyCashKami wrote:The "Yellow Bricks" as you call them are exactly the same as Madman's fat packs. The difference is, the Manga UK repackaged version is cheaper.. sorta.

• All episodes are uncut
Basically, the two important points.
I personally have the Madman release and it's fantastic but two or so episodes from the Fortuneteller Baba saga had some odd authoring problems. It wasn't really a big deal but I got the FUNi DVD set but only because it was really cheap otherwise I'd not have bothered.
The picture quality looks great, Japanese audio is muffled 1.0 and the English dub's in 2.0.
And no, the Yellow Bricks' release did not have these issues fixed. It was published as is. The Yellow Bricks look nicer than the Fat Packs and Single Saga Sets, if only because it uses the authentic Dragon Ball logo.

I’ve read that there are ghosting issues because of the PAL conversion.JohnnyCashKami wrote:• PAL vs NTSCuzuni wrote:I see. I watched the whole thing on my TV and that was something that never bothered me because I never noticed it, I was moreso surprised by how good it looked and how much footage could be seen. The Dragon Ball Dragon Box went even further and included the tape marks so there was no cropping at all but not always, though.uzuni wrote:I’ve read that there are ghosting issues because of the PAL conversion.
I'd rate the packaging in this order: Yellow Bricks (Manga UK) > Fat Packs (Madman) > Single Sets (FUNimation)
And to make it even better, the UK covers are reversible so that annoying BBFC rating logo can be hidden. They really have to include it everywhere on the covers (front, rear, spine).

I wonder,
are there NEPs on any of these sets?

Commander Red and Fortuneteller Baba just arrived today, and my God, do they look great!
If only some of the other saga sets weren’t so expensive.

Yeah, it really does look fantastic and I'd dare say I prefer how the Saga Set footage looks over the Dragon Box version. The Dragon Box has even more footage (and even the tape marks, if that's worth something to anyone) but FUNimation did a good job releasing the Saga Sets without ruining it.uzuni wrote:I didn’t think so.JohnnyCashKami wrote:Woulda been nice but no.uzuni wrote:I wonder,

By the way, the Madman releases of the Saga Sets can be purchased just in two DVD fat-packs which is much more convenient than getting all the individual Saga Set DVDs or even the Manga UK repackaged release in 5 DVD sets. However, the Madman DVD discs are R2/R4 so you'd need an R2/R4 DVD Player if you don't have (or use a PC/Laptop to play them).

Correct me if I'm wrong but I remember reading that neither of these sets include the two opening and four ending animations? That's a dealbreaker.

Re: Dragon Ball: Saga Sets vs. Yellow Bricks vs. Madman Box Sets
I don't think any English release has them. FUNimation made their own intros and outros for the '95 dub, but when they did the 2001 dub, Toei only sent them the first intro and the second outro it seems (note how those exact same two options appeared as "creditless" options on the OG Dragon Box; those were the ones sent to FUNimation a couple of years earlier). I'm not sure that the first, third and fourth even exist in creditless form outside of Toei's archives (although the second intro was used for Harmony Gold's dub of the first movie)MadSpecialist wrote:Correct me if I'm wrong but I remember reading that neither of these sets include the two opening and four ending animations? Yes. You already described that to me in another topic. I think, given the choice (as I live in Canada), I’d prefer to own the R1 versions.JohnnyCashKami wrote:Yeah, it really does look fantastic and I'd dare say I prefer how the Saga Set footage looks over the Dragon Box version. However, I will indeed have to purchase MangaUK’s first season or the Madman single of the first uncut 13 episodes (if I can find the latter).
