Dragon Ball the Movies BD release - reason for censoring middle fingers?
As far as I know, only middle fingers have been censored on this recent BD release of the movies in Japan. At first I thought that censoring was outrageous and got really upset. But when I calmed down about it, and especially after talking to someone who pointed out that fists are as much, or perhaps a bigger insults than middle fingers, I started to get curious.
Why is it that (seemingly) only middle fingers have been censored, but nothing else? Could the reason be what this other person pointed out? To "japanize" the release? I am very curious about this, and think that this could and should be a topic for the upcoming podcast. But while hoping for that, it'd be interesting to see what others who know Japanese culture think about this.

Not to be rude but how is holding up a fist more rude than the middle finger

I understand. But why would the person you talked to say that? That makes no sense.sangofe wrote:I am making this thread because I want to find out of this.Dbzfan94 wrote:Not to be rude but how is holding up a fist more rude than the middle finger

Because Toei thought that a large enough group of people would make a big enough stink about it. Same reason why they had to put the content disclaimer on the back of the boxes. There is no other motive here, especially one to "japanize" a movie originally made in Japan, by Japanese people, to show primarily to Japanese children.

Whatever reason is, we shouldnt support it and buy it, any censorship is bad. Honestly, i dont get it, since when flipping a bird suddenly became taboo?

The ironic thing about it is that the Netflix version is uncut. If TOEI are that concerned there would be such outrage why are they censoring the version that less people will watch? We know Blu-Rays appeal almost exclusively to the collectors market in Japan, not the average Joe or Mary. I'd like to know the reason too because I don't see the logic to it.Damned wrote:Because Toei thought that a large enough group of people would make a big enough stink about it.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

Whoops, sorry, i meant in anime Even nowadays there are some gestures tahat are censored in broadcast version, but become uncensored in home release, with is why i dont understand why suddenly censor flipping a bird?MasenkoHA wrote:I feel stupid.
