What's Pilaf's back story?

I know he had a castle and was called king , but king to who? Who is he really?

He was a self proclaimed king, he didn't really rule over anyone. His design almost makes me think he could be from the demon realm, although this has obviously never been stated.

Pilaf/Mai/Shu are kinda like evil counterparts of Goku/Bulma/Oolong. They even managed to find a Dragon Ball by themselves (the One-Star one).

I figure he either found/inherited the castle he owns. As a kid I kinda assumed he and Garlic Jr. were related in some way, which obviously isn't true.

Huh, I always kinda assumed that was all Shu and Mai! Kinda of a huge achievement for them considering that the Red Ribbon Army, who had Dr. Gero's aid, were unable to make a a Radar with an accuracy within a kilometer or two.

Dr. Gero probably didn't care about Commander Red's search for the Dragon Balls. He was focused on his robot and android stuff.

My head cannon backstory for him is that he's an incompetent, yet brilliant vending machine repair man who developed a napoleon complex.

No, he's not Garlic Jr, though they look a bit similar. Pilaf is way more funny though.

It's unknown exactly what he's the emperor of but for the sake of the story I believe he's the emperor of the mushroom forest and its area. I don't know if he still holds this title in Super.

Dunno, he certainly had far more time for that after Goku defeated them, but I suspect that he was skilled in other areas and the RRA used his expertise for that stuff. Now, given the quality of the Dragon Radar, it's possible that he purposefully didn't put that much effort into it and feigned that it was the best he could do so that he could focus on his Androids.
