If Gohan didn't train out in the wild then he wouldn't have developed any survival skills, and just have been spoiled by Chi Chi. He'd have a lesser understanding of just how serious the situation was thus Gohan's training would have been less intense & fruitful in improving his power level. He may have gotten stronger, but it just wouldn't be enough to help against the Saiyans as well as he did after being in the wilderness. We may have just seen Gohan get killed by Nappa had circumstances been different: although, Goku may have triggered SSJ upon seeing his dead son, but that's a separate topic for another day.
